  • For actual sales of Gold we're probably looking at 1000 to 1200. last week

The bottom of Main Top 100 or bottom of Sales Top 20 usually that amount. Wet Leg are at #15 in Sales Chart , #99 in Main Chart. ABBA are #17 in Sales chart.

1,000+ pure sales is still pretty good - 30 years after release and in the age of streaming. In 2021 Gold's 178k "chart sales" as the OCC call them included 52k pure sales - 1,000 a week on average. We haven't got Pure Sales for 2022 yet but probably looking at around 55k.

      • 'Lay All Your Love on Me' has now overtaken 'Take a Chance on Me' on Spotify, by 60k streams. It really is a monster streaming hit.

Another song that does well on Spotify is 'Slipping Through My Fingers', which is now ahead of 'I Have a Dream' by 327k streams.

        • Such a tragedy about the initial realease of Lay All Your Love On Me. It would have been at least a certain Top 5 Hit, not only in The UK, but elsewhere, if it wasn't released too late after Super Trouper (the Single) and only as a 12''. If I'd name my Top 10 ABBA-songs, this one is within for sure!

Slipping Through My Fingers belongs to the sort of ABBA-songs that have something in common (beside the fact, that they're ABBA-songs, of course): These up and downs in the chorus. As I am no musician I don't know if there's a correct terminus. You also find it in songs like Soldiers and Our Last Summer.

          • I wonder what will be the next ABBA single to get a UK Silver Disc? Will it be a song featured in Mamma Mia like Slipping Through My Fingers? Fan favourite The Day Before You Came, the festive Happy New Year or comeback single Don't Shut Me Down?

I don't quite understand the BPI rule where you can't get the same award for both physical and digital versions.

Example, Take a Chance on Me got a silver and gold disc back in 1978. But it can't get them for digital "sales" ie downloads or streaming. It would be eligible for platinum because it never had a platinum disc.

TfromBinG - totally agree with you about LAYLOM. It's one of my favourites too.

            • I'd add I Do, I Do, I Do....to the list for a potential forthcoming award. Not in any near being one of their greatest hits (in the UK) and also not one of their best numbers (but who jugdes?), but anyhow due.

              • Sweden:

                Singles:

                Happy New Year 26 (Re-entry) 22

                Gimme! Gimme! Gimme 42 (Re-entry) 9*

(Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! was never officially released as a single in Sweden. As far as I know, the original chart run -peak 16, 4 weeks- resulted from imports)

                Main Album Charts:

                Super Trouper 17 (Re-entry) 30

                Voulez-Vous 20 (Re-entry) 35

(both profited from the singles re-entries mentioned above, of course)

                Physical Album Charts:

                Voyage 11 (18) 56

                • In Sweden don't they have a rule that a GH can benefit from a track's streaming? It looks like just onr track can benefit a whole album

I never did understand why GGG was never relased as a single in Sweden. Iy was on GHV2 but that only peaked at #20 there.

                        • Too bad that RIAA does not certify automatically when an award is due! And Universal Music USA seems to be very lazy to apply for new ABBA certifications. I might be wrong, but on the US certification-thread it looks like, the artists themself get encouraged by their fans via instagram or whatever to apply for an award. Just like: "Hey, your latest album is eligible for platinum now! Go and get it!"

                          Comment

                          • Yes! GOLD has not been had updated certifications in the USA since 2002! That is very lazy! It should be on Diamond and infact platinum x 11. That Best Of Maters Collection should be on platinum or even double platinum now too. There are I am sure several songs eligible for awards too.

The Netherlands and Sweden also very slow in applying for certifications for Gold and Switzerland and The Netherlands for Voyage.

As I understand it the track to be certified must be at a higher level than the previously awarded certificate. Since the BPI get their sales from the OCC database the track must have sold (digital plus streams) since 1994 more than 600,000 to become Platinum. Physical sales between 1978 and 1994 would be unknown by BPI (only the Record Company would know these).

So Take A Chance On Me must not have sales of 600,000 since 1994, but may be close.

                                        • Sometimes I tend to say "Got it"! and sometimes not.

To keep on the Example Take A Chance On Me:

In September 2021 the OCC mentioned sales of 950,000 for this song (including 882,000 pure sales). It was certified gold back in 1978 or 1979 for sales of 500,000. So from September 2021 onwards the song needed and needs another 150,000 sales for platinum. Right?

In this case we know the sales. If we didn't and all we know is that it went gold for sales of 500,000 and the BPI later certifys it with platinum for another 600,000 sales since 1994, the result is, that the song sold at least 1,100,000 units. The gap between the total sales of the song (very unlikely that sales stopped all of a sudden at exact 500,000 units) and the new countings from 1994 onwards remains unkown. Even if its original sales were very close to platinum, it had to run the whole miles from the start again. Right?

I know how the certification process works. Perhaps I didn't explain properly.

My point was that Take a Chance on Me cannot have silver and gold digital award as it already has them - physical. I said it "would be eligible for platinum". Maybe I should have added "if had sold 600,000 since 1994"

The 882,000 Pure Sales figure for Take a Chance On Me seems a bit high. I understand physical sales only 700 to 750k. I doubt it sold 130-80k on downloads. ABBA's downloads stats were small. If you take thay 882k figure for pure sales and 950k total sales that only gives 68k streaming equivalent - which seems very low.

On the 1st page of this thread Take A Chance On Me is listed with download sales of 33,000 up to 2011. Source is/was the OCC. In 2015 Trent Nickson mentioned 56,300 downloads on his website. Source probably OCC again, but it's not mentioned.

Since BPI have not certified it Platinum, sales from 1994 must be less than 600,000.

Brian05. I think you are being very picky. The point I was making was that there are no duplication of physical and digital awards. You can only get higher award if not received before. I never said Take a Chance On Me sold 600k since 1994 only that it would be eligible for platinum but not silver or gold.

On page 1 of this thread a few dubious figures. It is very unlikely VV/Angel Eyes sold comparable to GGG and way above DYMK. DYMK actually sold more ithan VV/AEn 1979 and downloads comparable with VV/AE at the time. I also think The Name of The Game's sales are too high at 700k. It was only 17th best seller of 1977 with very few downloads

By contrast there seems to be a downplaying of MMM and One of Us. Both certified gold for 500k but both also had sales split between two years - more evenly in case of MMM.

Don't forget none of these were during the time the OCC compiled charts so a lot of calculations and miscalculations.
