          • Silver discs UK

Here is the complete list of silver discs awarded to Elvis
For over 250,000 records sold in Great Britain alone by Disc and Record mirror magazine as of April 1976

            I need your love tonight
            A mess of blues
            It`s now or never
            Are you lonesome tonight
            Wooden heart
            Surrender
            Devil in the disguise
            Wild in the country
            His latest flame
            Rock a hula baby
            Good luck charm
            She`s not you
            Return to sender
            Crying in the chapel
            In the ghetto
            Suspicious mind
            The wonder of you
            My boy

            • Does anyone happen to have any information on the US Nielsen Soundscan totals for "A Little Less Conversation"? Preferably all versions combined, or if not, the JXL Remix. I'm mainly interested in the digital song sales totals, but if possible I'd like to know the U.S. physical Soundscan totals as well.

The song was RIAA certified for digital sales of 100,000 in March 2006 (which is what digital "gold" was at the time, even though the RIAA website lists it at .5 million -- that's an error). Surely it must be approaching half a million in downloads by now.

                • Thanks, Kriss. Those certifications are for two different singles -- the video single and the standard single. The video single is certified platinum. The standard single was indeed certified gold, but as I said, the RIAA website is incorrect on the .5 million certification for the standard single. On March 31, 2006, the one and only time the standard single was certified, "gold" for audio downloads meant 100,000 copies, not 1/2 a million as their website lists. If it had sold 1/2 a million downloads as of that date, it would have been certified double platinum.

                              • Whilst Elvis comes at the top on lots of the above listings, it probably does not reflect the true story of achievements as such.

                                1. Elvis – 2738 weeks (1305 weeks for singles) (1433 weeks for albums)
                                2. Queen - 2133 weeks (462 weeks for singles) (1671 weeks for albums)
                                3. Michael Jackson – 2132 weeks (701 weeks for singles) (1431 weeks for albums)
                                4. Cliff Richard – 2074 weeks (1178 weeks for singles) (896 weeks for albums)
                                5. The Beatles - 1947 (461 for singles) (1486 for albums)

Elvis or his record company has issued around 160 singles and around 200 albums (maybe a few more) since he first charted so you would expect him to have more weeks in the charts.

Compare this to Queen, The Beatles or maybe Michael Jackson who have issued on average around a third of those numbers. Also, the number of weeks in the charts does not tell the full story either because if a record is extremely popular with the buying public within the first couple of weeks of release, it will not stay in the charts for a great length of time, but may well have sold more than a record that hangs around in the chart for several weeks but at a much lower position.

                                  • However, Elvis does not get anywhere near the publicity or airplay of the artists you mention. The List proves longevity and I expect Elvis to gain many more points following the release of Baz Luhrman's movie in 2021. The record companies decide what is going to be a hit and not the quality of the record or the artist. TV promotion and live concerts are now the main factors in selling records, neither of which benefits Elvis. Members of The Beatles and Queen are still alive to promote their records and Michael Jackson only charts with His No.1 Hits album in the UK. Elvis albums could chart anytime that SONY decides it is his turn to receive a portion of their promotion budget. However, they are more interested in promoting new artists and not deceased ones. Further, chart rules in the UK have drastically changed matters in favour of newer and younger artists so I expect Ed Sheeran to overtake David Bowie and Elton John in the next six months.
