This is true. I have seen some unofficial award being given during the early seventies. Some were mentioned by Billboard.

But they were presented by the record companies, sometimes for smaller sales, like 125,000 instead of 250,000. That was the case with The Rolling Stones, as I remember.

Should I manage to find a compilation / book or record company documentation on these early unofficial certifications, I'll post it here. Unfortunately, I can only think of a handful of people in Germany I could ask ;-(.

I asked the German record company, the industry association BVMI, two people operating charts related websites and a German record collector I know. All were kind enough to answer, but no one had any info on early (record company) certifications in Germany ;-(. So, for the time being we'll have to stay with the official BVMI certifications from 1975 onwards...
