A strange roller coaster for Fleetwood Mac in America.

The early years with Peter Green weren't very successful commercially.

In 1970 they moved to America and had a decent 5 years selling over 250,000 with each album.

In 1975 they were rocketed to mega sales.

It was reported sometime in the 1980's that the 1972 UK only release - Greatest Hits (red cover) on CBS had sold over a million copies in the USA on import. For whatever reason it was never released in the USA.

Their 1995 album Time, with key members missing, didn't even get to the Top 200 albums and has only scanned 50,000 - a little less than Rumours.

A lot of these certifications are very old. Together with all the uncertified albums, their total US album sales must be over 50m.

A different career trajectory for Fleetwood Mac in the UK.

The early years with Peter Green were hugely successful and the albums stayed long on the charts. But - because they were released before 1973 - no certifications!

The 1972 Greatest Hits was particularly successful and featured on the Top 200 album charts well into the 1990's.

When Peter Green left, and the band went to America in 1970, their new albums were totally ignored in the UK. It took until 1977 and Rumours to change things around.

Unlike the USA, the band managed a second mega-selling album with Tango in the Night which the UK loved.

Even the Time album managed to scrap into the charts - no cert though.

With the sales of the pre-1973 albums and others not certified, total UK album sales must be over 10m.

We know from end of year sales figures that from just 1984 to 2005 they sold between

    5,497,000 and 7,453,000 albums

I haven't done any other countries because the certifications are too patchy. Also many of their albums are too old and released before many places started doing proper sales awards.

One example is Canada. Rumours shipped 2m. Also, like the British, the Canadians loved Tango in the Night as this shipped 500,000. However they haven't certified Greatest Hits - which is ridiculous, or Tusk. So it's not worth doing a full list.

Maybe others have nearly complete information from other countries?

"Very Best Of" is much overdue for a double-platinum certification, since it's a 2-disc set and I'm sure that the BMG sales have done enough to push it past a 2x mark.

I wonder what the catalog sales on FM'75 and Tusk are, I think both of them likely have done enough in the past 20 years for another certification.

Mirage was a huge seller in 1982 but it seems like as time has passed, it hasn't been regarded as much of an "essential" Mac album the way Rumours, Tusk and Fleetwood Mac 1975 are considered

And I've made an error. The US version is of course a double CD - so it has "shipped" 500,000. Have altered post above.

You are quite right that it should go 2xp very soon with 1m shipments.

"Say You Will" also should be certified platinum when factoring in BMG sales as well

2 Fleetwood Mac titles listed on UK All Time Albums List

                        Rumours - 3,135,844

Tango in the Night - 2,333,819

shop sales only. Record Club sales would make actual shipments considerably higher.

A couple of solo albums with very modest sales

                              Danny Kirwin
A few pleasant solo albums in the 70's - few sales

                              Lindsey Buckingham
His solo albums have charted OK, but none have shipped 500,000 yet.

                              Dave Mason
This Traffic man was in the band for one album in the 1990's. His solo career came before the band.

14 charted albums, the following were certified
                              1970 Alone Together - 500,000
                              1974 Dave Mason - 500,000
                              1977 Let it Flow - 1,000,000

                              Buckingham-Nicks
Their 1973 album has never been on CD and there are no plans at all to release it.

Appeared on the catalogue chart 10 years after release in 1983 and spent 22 weeks there (vinyl/cass version).

Basil, thank you for the updates and the solo projects additions. I have two comments though.

Firstly, why didn't you include Dave Mason in the solo project section? He was a member of Fleetwood Mac from 1993 to 1995, and several of his albums were certified (Alone Together, Dave Mason and Let It Flow).

Also, Christine McVie has released three solo albums, not two. The latest one, In The Meantime, was released in June 2004 and has sold 19,944 copies as of February 2005 according to Soundscan.

                                  John

I admit I copped out a bit with Dave Mason - have now put his certified albums on the list.

Have also put on the Buckingham-Nicks album, which I also forgot.

Thanks for the info on the 3rd Christine McVie album.

Yes, the album got to 26 with 23 weeks on the chart.

If it missed going Gold it can't have been by much.

Also entirely possible that Warners haven't bothered to certify it. :-?

Basil, some Fleetwood Mac SS figures for you (that you seem not to be aware )

                                          Fleetwood Mac (1975) = 860k (2006)
                                          Tusk = 220k (date 2006?)
                                          Mirage = 102k (2006)
Tango In The Night = 238k (date 2006?)

Just noticed this thread as I was about to post the new Irish Charts and thought I'd mention that Greatest Hits jumps from 36 to 12 in the Top 75 Artist Album chart this week.

                                              Merci Edu.

I had posted these on the riaa thread but entirely forgot to post them here.

The first post looks rather better now.

                                              Thanks for waking me up!

                                              Cheers - Basil
