  • Kiss :: Charts & Sales History

According to the RIAA their certifications are 19 millions albums sold in the US but here's the problem their catalogue is very very undercetified there.

From the KISS FAQ it is stated that the band has sold 37,500,000 albums in the US as you can see the difference is huge Here's the link

    http://kissfaq.com/charts/plat.html

and now from gene simmons official website:
    http://www.genesimmons.com/albums/index.html

Any idea of what the band could have sold worldwide?

Everything Kiss says is fake. Like many rock bands (deep purple, status quo, ...)

I think they announced years ago 100M albums sold

If you consider that US is by far their biggest market these datas are laughable.

Aside from touring, Kiss have never really enjoyed any major success outside of the US and have never had a major hit album in the UK with the possible exception of 'Crazy Crazy Nights' - which, incidently, has a title track that, ahem... 'Rocks like a bitch'!

          Total soundscan 8,165,000 March 2006

The certifications seem pretty up to date. Taking albums that are say platinum, but have now shipped somewhere between 1 and 2m, you could estimate an all time US sale of 25m copies.

As stated in the post above, the US is by far their largest market. I would estimate sales in the rest of the world to be no more than 15m.

So worldwide album sales about 40m.

I've seen an episode of VH1's Ultimate albums about "Alive!" - their first live album from 1975.

In the show we're told that it's a 4 x platinum album in the US.

All Music Guide says the same (LINK) furthermore it spent 110 weeks on Billboard and reached the top 10!
It has scanned 236,000 since 1991, so maybe the RIAA database isn't complete.

            500,000 is way to little.

I'm pretty sure the numbers from the KISS FAQ are right
and yes Alive is 4Xplatinum. http://kissfaq.com/charts/plat.html

Altogether Kiss have sold more than 80 million records worldwide and were awarded 28 gold and 31 platinum albums.http://www.noiserecords.com/kiss/ali...tatement.shtml

KISS has been a fixture on the American music scene for the last 30 years, earning 24 gold records while accumulating more than 80 million album sales worldwide.http://www.sambass.com/news/0308KISScar.php?theme=tear

well seems like they sold probably 80 millions albums or records, I think it's records, worldwide

Then Kiss would have had to sell substantially more than the 60 million in USA alone to have sold the 80 million that is claimed
Not easy for a rock group to sell 20 million records outside the USA,not many have done it. I dont think Kiss is particular strong in any market outside the USA like Queen is in UK or Zeppelin in Canada.

People on this board are wary of claims that artists, record companies make, they like to see some evidence and then extrapolate from there

are the Soundscan numbers just for the 1997-1998 remasters (everything through Crazy Nights got the remaster treatment in 97 and 98) or original CD's and the remasters combined? 236,000 seems so low for an album like Alive! which is considered a rock classic

Usually when a label says 'records' that means albums and singles. Do they have high enough single sales to add up to that 80M.

I have read that '80 million' sales mark branded about. I think, imo, it can and may be possible but only if we were to count their albums, singles, solo recordings and box sets (as individual counts) from across the globe.

As curious as the 80 million slaes claim is, they have had a very lenghty chart life and remain a major concert draw so there must be some record buyers out there somewhere!

And the people that go to their concerts multiple times tend to buy all their albums so you make a good point.

If a guy like Julio Iglesias can sold more than 200 millions albums with more than 75+ albums why can't KISS sold 80 millions with more than 30 something albums? Do you know what I mean?
Nowadays we can know all about certifications with billboard, IFPI etc... but back in the 70's it was way different than today and the KISS catalogue is very undercertified that's for sure!

Maybe but you still give 0 evidence.

The fact that they release many albums proves nothing. Anyway when you look at their low soundscan total, it's not hard to guess that worlwide they don't have huge catalogue sales (Alive included)

Nowadays in france Kiss sell around 10k per album no more. I suppose it's more or less the same in europe. They don't have any recent certifications worldwide except in the US (maybe one gold album in sweden I think).

Belated thanks Dane, I forgot to update these and have now done so (above).

So they sold 765,000 from Oct 2003 to March 2006, so around 300,000 annually.

Thanks. Apart from the recent compilation discs (Gold, Millenium, Very best of), most titles have sold 2,000 or less since the last update above (11 months ago). Only "Destroyer" has 'decent' catalog sales with 12,000.

...their latest studio disc stands still at 479K

how on earth did Crazy Nights sell 11k in the past year? The album is generally regarded as one of their worst and I don't think there are any songs off there that have had a major renaissance lately.

It is a bit surprising that despite the neverending popularity of the band, the Kissology DVD's have been quite successful, album sales aren't that great. With the status that Alive and Destroyer have as classic rock albums, you'd think both of them would easily be past 1 million. I am surprised at how well an album like Unmasked has done catalogwise, considering the album was their poorest seller to date and only "Shandi" is even regarded as a minor Kiss classic.

It sure would be interesting to see an RIAA update for KISS.
An album like "Alive!" went Gold early on in its amazing 110 week chart run.
I wonder if it really is 4 x platinum like they say...
