These soundscan figures total 22,284,000. By September 2005 Elton's soundscan total was 24 million, so about 2 million is missing.
A few titles don't have a soundscan figure. A few are too low - The Road to Eldorado sold more than 2,000. Also a number of titles were released as "Classic Editions" and these may not be included.
Here are SS figures of albums that didn't chart plus corrections to complete the scan picture.
The Road to Eldorado 197,000 copies
Greatest Hits Vol 3 1979-1987 280,000
Rare Masters 111,000
Your Songs 106,000
Three more that you didn't mention in the US list:
Very Best Of 162,000
England's Rose 62,000
Live At The Ritz-Exclusive-007 38,000
I know the above numbers don't add up to the "missing" 2 million, but please bear in mind, the 24 million figure I posted in September includes karaoke albums, interview albums and "in the style of" albums (Elton numbers sung by anonymous artists).
Also, a couple of the older albums were released combined, e.g. Tumbleweed/Madman.. which scanned 9,000 copies).
---------------------------------------------------
YOU CAN ALSO CITE FOR US CHARTS in a category called PROJECTS (also if it appears as "various artists")THE SALES FOR
LION KING (OST):7.676
LION KING (Broadway): 548
Please note that for every album sales Soundscan doesn't cover any shop in which you find cds. I've read that you must add a +5% to all soundscan figures to have realistic sales; and a + 10% for special cds like The lion king, candle in the wind, Greatest HitsII where you have a massive distribution and you can find Cds in toys shops, theatres and other places not usually covered by SOUNDSCAN. This explain why for ex for Lion King have been distributed 10k copies, for probably a 8,5k realistc sales.
Interesting also the US sales of the IMPORT double album THE VERY BEST of EJ

It's quite impossible to establish Elton's singles sales Worldwide because most of his succesfull singles were in the 70s.
In that time in most of the countries the certificatios didn't exist.
For example : Crocodile rock was the soldest single in 1973 in Italy but I don't know how much it sold.

Hanboo, I posted this question in the Chart histories thread. I guess it belongs in here instead.
Could you inform the correct number for "Greatest hits"? Thanks!
Originally posted by DaneElton's Chart history was recently found in your US chart analysis.
You had "Greatest hits" at 4,546,000 scans.
However, recently I saw one of the rarely seen Soundscan Top 200 Catalog Chart
(BB issue date 31-12-05):
# 173 JOHN*ELTON GREATEST HITS 6226 79 3469 3667094
Was your figure wrong or simply a combined figure for different editions?
Thanks.

The Geffen version sold 894K (rel.01/10/1984).
There are 3 others, which all sold less than 16K. Biggest of those is the DCC one, which scanned 15,700.

Minimum by dec05 then:

i think that Worlwid sales from WIKIPEDIA are realistic, but not OFFICIAL.
Also ITALIAN SALES are not official.
Please, always cite where you take details (in Italy there's no a website with certification details)
Please don't post anything like that saying it's official.
Thank you

The Geffen version sold 894K (rel.01/10/1984).
According to Amazon.com the Island CD was released October 1990.

Impressive then, that the Geffen version sold 894K during Soundscan!
My catalog thread has now been updated with the combined figure (4.577m).

The DCC one is interesting.
Could be the failed "Digital Compact Cassette" version.
Could also be a Gold CD version on the DCC label. This label licensed classic albums and produced them in Gold Plated CD versions at about double the price of a normal CD. They were mastered by Steve Hoffman - one of the best ever for transfering analogue tapes to digital. If you see "remastered by Steve Hoffman" on a CD it's a good bet he got the best possible sound out of the source tapes available.
A number of Elton's titles came out on Gold Plated CD's in the US including
Goodbye Yellowbrick Road (1989)
Honky Chateau (1990)
Madman Across the Water (1989)
Tumbleweed Connection (1991)
They are now collectable because of their low sales and because the mastering was different to the regular CD's.
Another item I've also remembered from Elton's catalogue is that
Goodbye Yellowbrick Road was issued on CD in 1984 as a 2CD set. Then in 1992 it was issued on just one CD. The Gold CD in 1989 was also a one CD version.See Page One of my threads for all updates

More updates on Page One.
US sales for The Captain and the Kid are absolutely dreadful - 113,000 and it has already dropped off the chart. Looks like it will fail to even reach Gold level.
No certification in the UK either.
Were any singles actually released off this album??See Page One of my threads for all updates
