Thanks dwv. This one was re-issued a year or so ago with an initial pressing of 50,000.

Well, actually Elton is not in good relationship with Universal because lack of promotion of his last album.
I think also a record company must pay a little fee for certification. I think this can explain a bit the situation....
Also, if GH 70-02 is 2.118.000 in soundscan sales, it means that is about at 2.300.000 in real sales (adding the sales that soundscan does'nt cover).
If platinum is for distribution, it has to be, or is very near, the 5xPlatinum (2.500.000 distributed for double albums.

Can't see Elton releasing any more albums now. This was a great record (unlike, say, Leather Jackets) and it's hard to see how he can make a better one.

Elton's US Tours
Elton's US debut at the tiny Whiskey club in LA (August 1970) made him an instant star and started a touring career that is now in it's 38th year.
From 1970 the annual US tours got bigger with the biggest taking in 7 nights at Madison Square Garden where he dressed as the Statue Of Liberty!
We've no grosses/attendances for the years 1970 to 1991, but it seems he performed several thousand concerts worldwide.
It's possible on the internet to find lists of all the concerts ever played by some artists even way back to the 60's. Such lists exist for the likes of The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd. But I can't find any info at all on Elton John.
In more recent years the long long tours have ended. Rather he does strings of dates all over the world including short Las Vegas seasons.
Billboard reported that from 1991 to 2006 he performed to 10,000,000 people in the US alone. A total of 600 US shows meaning he does about 40 US shows a year.
Total gross for these shows was $600,000,000. Decent spending money.
But March 25th will be a real landmark. Yes, it's my birthday.
However it is also Elton's (and Aretha Franklin's).
Elton will be 60 and will perform his 60th sold out show at Madison Square Garden. A record way ahead of any other artist.
How neat is that.

Well, adding a +5% from various not scanned sales, Greatest Hits 1970-2002 has to be certified 5xPlatinum in uk (1,500.000 copies).
In Us double album is counted for 2. Not it's nearly 2.200.000 copies that means 4xPlatinum (4,4 million) and near 5Xplatinum (2.500.000 copies distributed).
Why Universal did not certified them is in my opinion the same matter for not promoting The Captain and The kid... Relationshipo between them and elton has gone.Comment

It's the 16th EJ top 10 album in US.

kinda sucks that he releases new albums that don't seem to do well, but then repackage those hits for the 22nd time and you've got another hit album. I mean, the 70's was Elton's classic period, but his last three studio albums all deserved to do much better than they have.Comment

You are too negative, basil :-) I agree with you, Elton won't relase any studio album, but for universal. But it will go on forever, let's hope he'll remain in this good crative mood.
But elton is still elton. See what happened to Rod Stewart after 2 disastrous sales album. He invented a format and sell a lot more records again.Comment

The Cpt & the Kid was a good album (miles better then stuff like Leather Jackets) but Universal totally lost it - not just in the US, but everywhere.
It's sad for an artist of his stature to get such shabby treatment.
Because of his label changes over 30 years in the US, it is likely that the riaa awards don't give the full story of his US sales. Universal won't bother to fix this.
I don't think covers albums are an option for Elton, and he said he'd do a Christmas album "over his dead body".
Perhaps the Paul McCartney route like Starbucks, or Garth Brooks with Wal-Mart.
