The latter. The edition, the only which is still selling and charted on the Catalog chart, is the Island version (rel. 20/10/1992).
The Geffen version sold 894K (rel.01/10/1984).

However, it seems the Island version charted already on the very first catalog chart in May 1991.
According to Amazon.com the Island CD was released October 1990.

Impressive then, that the Geffen version sold 894K during Soundscan!

My catalog thread has now been updated with the combined figure (4.577m).

i think that Worlwid sales from WIKIPEDIA are realistic, but not OFFICIAL.

Also ITALIAN SALES are not official.
Please, always cite where you take details (in Italy there's no a website with certification details)

Could you inform the correct number for "Greatest hits"? Thanks!

Elton's Chart history was recently found in your US chart analysis.
You had "Greatest hits" at 4,546,000 scans.
However, recently I saw one of the rarely seen Soundscan Top 200 Catalog Chart
(BB issue date 31-12-05):

# 173 JOHN*ELTON GREATEST HITS 6226 79 3469 3667094

Was your figure wrong or simply a combined figure for different editions?

There are 3 others, which all sold less than 16K. Biggest of those is the DCC one, which scanned 15,700.

Yes, I heard it sold something like 500,000!!!
And yes, we all don't know his singles sales...
But like you always do, guessing, I really would like to read Elton's boy's work.

It's quite impossible to establish Elton's singles sales Worldwide because most of his succesfull singles were in the 70s.

In that time in most of the countries the certificatios didn't exist.

For example : Crocodile rock was the soldest single in 1973 in Italy but I don't know how much it sold.

Please note that for every album sales Soundscan doesn't cover any shop in which you find cds. I've read that you must add a +5% to all soundscan figures to have realistic sales; and a + 10% for special cds like The lion king, candle in the wind, Greatest HitsII where you have a massive distribution and you can find Cds in toys shops, theatres and other places not usually covered by SOUNDSCAN. This explain why for ex for Lion King have been distributed 10k copies, for probably a 8,5k realistc sales.
