                  • Thank you, "Greatest Hits" sold more than 6,000 copies this week in the United States.

More Portuguese chart information. Unfortunately, I don't have the annual Top selling albums for 1977, but the magazine Musica & Som published a Top 3 with the best selling bands of the year. It was as follows:

                    Portugal Grupos 1977

                    1- Pink Floyd
                    2- Supertramp
                    3- Queen

This implies that "A Day At The Races" was amongst the best selling albums of the year, perhaps in the Top 10.

During 1977, Queen had at least two Top 10 singles: "Somebody To Love" and "Queen's First EP" too.

                    • I have to admit with Greatest hits increased chart performance on Amazon.com and ITunes in America last week I thought that would sell more then 6000 copies.

However it's still a decent amount nowadays and Queen's sales I'm sure we're split up between other albums Greatest Hits 1 and 2 combined album always seems to chart the highest on Amazon for some reason plus there is Greatest Hits -WWRY version, The Platinum Collection, Classic Queen and Absolute Greatest to cannabilize sales - some of these may chart in the top 200 catalogue chart as well...

                      • Ed, you've got to be more realistic about sales. The only songs that were going to be played, were the most popular "Hits" songs.

Queen studio albums, just don't shift that well in the USA (or even in the UK, in relation to similar sized or thought of acts).

ANATO is about 1.2m, that's it, so you shouldn't expect any great shakes in the US, ever, for their studio albums...unless, maybe Brian dies!

It was nice to see someone do "Save Me", though.

Take care Hur....love you!....tonight's choice is...II (but not the best, II)...too many styles, but fun. Although, lovin the Beach Boys touch!

Best Queen Album....Greatest Hits I! Love you guys, especially Edward!

I am (usually!) realistic jimmy pages. I just thought that Greatest Hits may have shifted ~10k in America but as I said there are numerous Queen compilations that are also selling which do have an impact. I never thought it would make much of a difference on their studio album sales in the States as its the hits albums that sell there really well although their catalogue studio sales aren't too bad when you consider how badly Queen sold from 1985-1990 in USA.

Regarding ANATO's sales is that total the US sounds sales you are referring to as I believe this has shifted around 1.5 million in total in UK and much more in the States.

Queen are also doing really well on catalogue digital sales and it will be interesting to see a new total sales figure for US digital sales.

                          • BTW American Idol must also be watched quite a bit in Canada as Absolute Greatest is now number 75 in the Canadian top 100 albums chart (increased from 119 last week and 143 the week before that). It also states that it has been in the charts for 72 weeks which I'm assuming must be the top 200! It wold be interesting to know its total Canadian sales but it looks like this album been most successful here apart from the UK although it hasn't stayed as long here in the charts. It looks like Canadians have adopted this album as the 'de facto. Queen hits album.

Also The Platinum Collection is at No 187 in UK album charts last week increasing from 199

I agree that Edwood is sometimes too generous with his expectations (although he was right about "Absolute Greatest" in the UK). But your comments about Queen's studio albums sales in Great Britain are equally irrealistic.

                              I compiled a breakdown, from 1984 to 2012, and I came up with the following results: http://www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.p ... start=2725

Even though their compilations are their biggest selling back catalogue albums, thier studio and live albums also do very well; as has been the case during the past 28 years (I don't go further because I have never seen any annual totals from 1983 or backwards). By my reckoning, all their non compilation albums have probably done, altogether, between 5,000,000 and 6,000,000 in total from 1984 to 2012.

Sorry, not the type of sales for a band that is supposed not to "shift that well" in the UK. In fact, apart from the Beatles and perhaps Pink Floyd, I can't think of any band that has sold more 'back catalogue' non compilation albums during that time frame. And if we combine their 'non compilations' sales with their 'compilations sales', Queen have arguably sold more than any other band as a back catalogue band during the last 28 years.

Seriously, it would be great if you could try to revise some of your notions, becauswe I think you are simply wrong here or being too simplistic to fully appreciate eveything that needs to be considered (which is surprising, because you always come up with some deep reasonings).

In the USA, their studio albums sales aren't terrible but not particularly enormous either. But anyway, we all know it isn't their best market (even though they are still one of the biggest foreign bands in North America). I could say that Led Zeppelin don't exist based on their German sales, for example. Not fair.

The last figure we had for Platinum Collection was from September 2009 and the figure was 679,000 copies. During this period, it has sold 117,000 copies, and its average is 40,000 copies per year. It's a positive data, considering that Platinum Collection is never in the Top 200 Catalog. But it sells well. It's a pity there aren't Classic Queen and Greatest Hits I & II in the chart. If they had been there, now we would have a sales data up-to-dated. However their figures are probably smaller than Platinum Collection ones.

                                • Thank you, Loris.

By September 2009, Queen had sold 19,501,000 albums in the Soundscan era, including "Greatest Hits" at 6,693,000; "Greatest Hits: We Will Rock You" at 873,000; and as you said, "Platinum Collection" at 679,000.

So during the last 31 months, these three sold a combined 586,000 copies.

"Classic Queen" and "Greatest Hits I & II" will have sold 50,000 to 75,000 units each since September 2009. Or 100,000 to 150,000 combined.

"Absolute Greatest", perhaps, some 25,000 to 50,000.

To which we need to add other smaller compilations such as "Greatest Hits III", "Greatest Hits II" (the worldwide version released in 2011) and maybe even "Queen Rocks" and "Stone Cold Classics". All of them with very marginal sales.

But it is entirely possible these other compilations accumulated at least 150,000 copies and a maximum of 250,000. Shall we meet halfway: around 200,000 copies.
In total, all their compilations look to have sold nearly 800,000 copies. With all their other albums, that would make it approximately 825,000 albums during the last two and a half years. Unless I'm miscounting something. Any help?

                                  • USA Digital Tracks:

Last November (2011) Bohemian Rhapsody's figure was 2,643,000. From that moment on, the studio version has sold further 134,000 digital downloads. So the sum is 2,777,000.

The total of all the versions of Bohemian Rhapsody probably reaches 2,800,000.

We Will Rock You, last November (2011), was declared to be at 2,285,000. From that moment on, it has sold 116,000 downloads and the sum is 2,400,000. So, considering all the versions, the total coud reach 2,450,000.

We Are The Champions was 1,467,000 to November (2011).

Under Pressure was 1,167,000 to September 2010. We know that from the last weeks of 2011 till the end of February 2012, it sold almost 60,000 copies in that period only.

Fat Bottomed Girls. The total we know is 807,813 copies by now.

Another One Bites the Dust. The total we know is 1,353,628 copies by now.

Somebody To Love was 572,000 downloads to September 2010.

Killer Queen was 485,000 downloads to September 2010.

You're My Best Friend was 455,000 downloads to September 2010.

Crazy Little Thing Called Love was 403,000 copies to September 2010.

The total of all these songs probably is over 12,000,000 downloads, maybe even 12,500,000.

                                    • Great summary.

I invite all my Queen fellows to join my Queen sales topic on Haven: http://fatherandy2.proboards.com/index. ... read=73347. Please, add your thoughts and suggestions. It gives us a nice chance to have all we know organized on a forum page.

                                      As for USA digital sales:

When Queen were reported to have sold 10,203,000 digital downloads in the USA by September 2009, both "Bohemian Rhapsdoy" and "We Will Rock You" had accumulated combined sales of 3,400,000 by then (33 %).

Those two songs are now on 5,250,000 copies according to your above analysis.

If arithmetics are any help, that would suggest total digital sales for Queen in excess of 15,750,000 by now. But if other tracks haven't sold that well in the meantime, it could be lower than that.

Apart from those ten songs, I wonder what other tracks are selling these days in the United States. I guess "Keep Yourself Alive", "Stone Cold Crazy", "Don't Stop Me Now", "Play The Game", "Radio Ga-Ga", "I Want To Break Free", "Who Wants To Live Forever", "I Want It All", and "The Show Must Go On" are selling in decent quantities.

Although I would love to know how many digital units have Queen sold in Japan. Their combined numbers, with all formats added in, have to be very high altogether. Probably anything from 3,000,000 to 6,000,000.

                                          • Something I posted on Haven forum but would also be nice to have here. A nice overview of what Queen achieved during the last ten years in the UK:

By my reckoning, Queen sold more than 8,700,000 records between 2002 and 2012.

Albums sales during the past ten years in the UK

                                            2002 – 930,000
                                            2003 – 471,000
                                            2004 – 465,000
                                            2005 – 620,000
                                            2006 – 640,000
                                            2007 – 408,357
                                            2008 – 363,830
                                            2009 – 661,468
                                            2010 – 185,000
                                            2011 and 2012 – 300,000 (estimated)

                                            Total – 5,044,655

The number for 2004 comes from a BPI annual reprot compiled in early 2005. I know it doesn't fit the Music's annual ranking but it is the only thing I have. Hopefully, we will know, one day, the real sales of Queen in that missing year.

Their DVDs net shipments from 2002 to 2008 were, on a yearly basis, as follows:

                                            2003 – 393,511
                                            2004 – 230,435
                                            2005 – 236,745
                                            2006 – 86,588
                                            2007 – 32,747
                                            2008 – 34,052

                                            Total – 1,020,469

These include The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, Greatest Video Hits, Made In Heaven: The Films, Live At Wembley, Greatest Video Hits II, Queen On Fire, Return Of The Champions, and A Night At The Opera. And they are from 2008, which means there are more than three years of sales missing.

And we need to add (this time coming from the Official Chart Company, retail sales). Totals up to 2010:

                                            Queen Rock Montreal – 91,150 (including 11,150 on Blu-Ray)
                                            Live In Ukraine – 17,000

All this totals to 1,128,619 copies.

Last year, Queen reissued their Live At Wembley DVD, which will have achieved at least 25,000; and Days Of Our Lives, with no more than 5,000.

With the back cataloue sales for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, Queen have accumulated 1,200,000.

And we still have to add some marginal VHS sales.

So combining albums and music videos, the long and physical formats, Queen have reached sales of 6,244,000 in the UK from 2002 to 2012.

Plus, as stated in the third post of this thread, Queen sold 2,090,000 digital downloads by 2011; and 16 months after that, their tally should have increased to 2,500,000 tracks (assuming the Official Chart Company was right when they reported the figure in 2011).

                                            Overall, Queen sold:

                                            Albums – 5,044,000
                                            DVD – 1,200,000
                                            Digital downloads – 2,500,000

More than 8,744,000 records in the last ten years. Perhaps nearly 8,800,000 with the marginal VHS sales I mentioned.

I can't think of any old, classic band selling that many units from 2002 to 2012. Of course, U2, Oasis and even Coldplay are 'classic bands', but they have been heavily active during this last decade (plus, I'm not even sure if U2 or Oasis sold as many records as Queen during these last ten year I'm focusing on).

It never ceases to amaze me how achievements like the above pass completely unnoticed.

                                                  • Just discovered a very interesting Queen sales award on ebay, Hernan is this a figure you are aware of, if so i apologise.

Basically it's an official EMI UK sales award for Greatest Hits 2 for sales of inexcess of 300,000 copies through the music club Britannia, not shop sales but music club sales up until 1993.

Here is a link to the awardhttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Qu...item519f1e55e9
