        • As some may be aware, an Irish best selling album was list was compiled recently and no Queen title featured the ranking, even though according to some inner sources, it just covered the 1992 to 2012 time frame. Much of that stuff was mentioned in the following topic: viewtopic.php?t=88883.

But regardless, that was enough for a few UKmix members to make fun of Queen and myself, most in a nice way of course.

I can't say that Queen sold this or that in Ireland because I don't really have enough information. Maybe they didn't sell as many albums as they did in the UK proportionately.

Anyway, because there is little information about Queen in Ireland –certainly in this topic-, I put together most of their charts stats on the Irish singles charts from the 1974 to present.

          Some charts in Ireland

-Overall, Queen had 30 Top 10 hits.

-They also had 46 chart hits.

-I could be wrong, but I think they achieved more Top 10 singles and official hits than any other foreign band.

-They spent 265 weeks on charts (at least).

-They spent 127 weeks in the Top 10 (at least).

-Bohemian Rhapsody reached number one in 1975 and stayed there until early 1976; it was the Christmas chart topper in 1975.

-In 1991, it repeated that feat: number one during the Christmas week and further weeks at the summit during early 1992.

-In total, Bohemian Rhapsody spent 14 weeks at number one. In the physical era, it stayed there longer than any single by any band; it was also a Christmas chart topper twice (only single to do so); and had number one weeks in four different years (1975, 1976, 1991 and 1992).

-They were a regular feature in the Top 10 around the Christmas time in many different years (not many can boast that): 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1991, 1995.

-And Top 20 in several others: 1981, 1991 and 1998.

Their Top 10 singles. Some may not be complete.

          31.10.1993: 28

Sadly not many albums stats, although I doubt they did as well as in their home country.

By July 2008, Platinum Collection had spent 132 weeks in the official Irish Top 75 (more in the Top 100).

These are its weekly chart position while inside the Top 10, back in 2002:

          Platinum Collection
          22.08.2002: 2
          29.08.2002: 2
          05.09.2002: 3
          12.09.2002: 2
          19.09.2002: 3
          26.09.2002: 7
          03.10.2002: 7
          10.10.2002: 9
          17.10.2002: 9
24.10.2002: 10 (24 weeks on chart by then)

In 2002, it was the fourteenth best selling album of the year.

I know it was certified double platinum (30,000 copies shipped) during that year, very quickly.

But it went on to charts in subsequent years. In fact, after that Platinum Collection accumulated a further 108 weeks in the Irish Top 75.

No idea about Greatest Hits, other than some details.

It had a nice increase in mid 2005. Some weekly chart positions:

          Greatest Hits
          07.07.2005: 27
          14.07.2005: 16
          21.07.2005: 34
          28.07.2005: 39
          04.08.2005: 36
          11.08.2005: 40

By December 2007, Greatest Hits was listed with 78 weeks in the Irish Top 75 (although not dating back to 1981).

          • Nice HUR! I would say if anything they have had more success with the singles than they did in the UK!! Would love to know about the albums, the Irish market though is very small and not important on a worldwide basis, nevertheless I would still like to know. Great info, thanks!!

                      • Absolute Greatest is back at number 60 in the Canadian top 100 album charts

Looks like this country is where this album is now considered the catalog Queen hits collection. It was at 120 last week and 126 the week before and now has spent 82 weeks on the Canadian top 200 album chart.

Its also number 7 in the Hard Rock chart whilst Greatest Hits is at number 30 - the latter album has now spent 823 weeks in that chart.

                                      • Of all my estimations, I'm far more confident on these DVDs sales than my albums or singles estimates. For a number of reasons.

Please, correct any mistake or omissions.

The information is relatively recent and therefore easier to monitor.

We have most of their USA sales via Soundscan. Universal revealed their Canadian shipments too, plus the occasional certification, always helpful.

We also have a big reservoir of British information: all their annual shipments up to 2008, years end charts, weekly chart stats and some retail sales for recent years. Mainland Europe is equally fine: their DVD catalogue is heavily certified in countries like Germany, France, Poland, Portugal and others plus there are archives available to capture their chart performance. Some net shipments have leaked for certain countries, like Netherlands and Spain. Additionally, further information on other countries. Arguably, the only 'hole' in Europe is Italy, a strong territory for the band (they have done better there than just about any other band apart from Pink Floyd) and not that much. By the way: compared to previous posts, I lowered my Live At Wembley's estimations for Italy because, last year, I learned it only sold 21,000 copies in 2005 (even though it spent many weeks at the pole position).

Latin America is very well covered: many certifications for Mexico and Argentina, and also the Brazilian codes. And a lot about Japan, Australia, New Zealand even some for South Africa and United Arab Emirates (only some snippets for those last two countries). I only did some conservative estimations to take account of the rest of the world, in order to round up the worldwide totals.

                                        Only DVDs, not VHS.

I'm trying to estimate their VHS sales worldwide, I think I can only make some good guesses about the UK, but not much more than that.

Others includes, here, Rock In Rio, Video Collection, The Untold Story, An Evening At The Concert Hall and a long list of unofficial releases.

Some of them were particularly successful in some countries. For instance, Rock In Rio achieved shipments nearing 50,000 and it was a number one video on the Chilean charts, apart from having achieved Top 20 positions in Argentina and doing randomly fine in other continents, like charting at number 98 in the Swedish year end chart of 2007.

Video Collection has come to replace Greatest Video Hits and Greatest Video Hits II during these past two years of unexplainable deletion (fortunately something will be done in USA to overcome that, with a new release next month).

An Evening At The Concert Hall has been charting on the Swedish chart recently, that Scandinavian country being (at least in recent years) a surprising redoubt for their DVDs.

                                        Overall total: 7,400,000+

                                        Conclusions:

UK: very impressive sales in the UK, I think they sold slightly more there than in the USA. And this is despite the fact they have given their rivals like two years of advantage. Other than Live At Wembley last year, their other music videos haven't been released under Universal Music and EMI almost didn't bother in late 2009 and especially 2010, knowing their contract was going to terminate soon. Basically, aside from some small back catalogue sales, Queen have sold very little during the last three years and yet, they reached (by my reckoning) DVDs sales of 1,200,000 since 2002, in just ten years. They dominated the charts between 2002 and 2007.

Mainland Europe: tremendous sales in Germany, France, Italy Portugal, Sweden and several others. Maybe Spain is a relative disappointment or perhaps I'm being unfair.

USA and Canada: very good. They are lacking a truly huge seller, same as with their albums sales.

Japan: I would have liked more, they didn't capitalize their 2004 resurgence like they could have done.

Latin America, Oceania and South Africa: nothing to complain about. In South and Central America, in fact, their sales are superb.

                                        • I think the GVidH1 and GVidH2 figures for Argentina might be wrong, as the videos were certified 1xPlat each back in 2002 and 2003 respectively, when levels were higher, now the Plat cert level for videos in Argentina is 15k -Gold is 7,5k-.(That's according to the IFPI and their international certification levels release updated in March this year) Most of these vids were sold as DVDs as well.

Live at Wembley, Live at the bowl and We will rock you Videos were also certified Plat in Argentina but later on.

                                          • Thank you. I think that up to 2007, the levels were as follows: 2,000 copies were needed for gold and 4,000 for platinum. These were increased to 4,000 and 8,000 and then again 7,500 and 15,000 respectively in both cases.

So DVDs like Greatest Video Hits, Greatest Video Hits II or Live At Wembley were all platinum for 4,000; but in Argentina, no multiple platinum awards were shown in the former database. So some of those DVDs may have sold more than that and we just don't know.

In particular, Live At Wembley sold very well. I wouldn't be surprised if those titles reached sales of 5,000 to 15,000 each.

I believe so too, they kept on selling yet some remain undercertified.

                                              • Thank you, Hernán. Great numbers. I've noticed that Rock Montréal has significantly increased from the last estimation you made. I think that in Italy it has probably sold more than 30,000 copies, as it appears at least 10 times every year into the top-20 DVD Chart. I suspect it could have sold even more than 40,000 copies, but maybe my estimation is inflated.

If we count also the VHSs, do you think that Queen have sold 12,000,000 music videos?

                                                • Thank you, Loris. I said 10,000,000 overall on more than one occasion. But yes, about 12,000,000 is perfectly feasible.

The problem is knowing what VHS would sell during the eighties and nineties worldiwde, especially in Europe.

I have been able to see some UK sales numbers from about that time, coming from reliable sources, and I can tell you that Queen easily sold more VHS (from 1981 to 2000) than DVDs (from 2002 to 2012) in their homeland, clearly more. But that doesn't mean the same escenario occurred in other countries, like Germany or Italy, where they dominated the local markets back then. They didn't lack chart success, I just don't know what sales were like in those two countries, or France, Spain, Netherlands. I have some USA stats, but that is it.

It comes down to whether the following sentence was right or not and what was it referring to:

"Queen are firmly established as the biggest selling music video cassette artists of all time, having sold olver 2 million tapes to date".

It comes from the press release of Champions Of The World, in November 1995.

It is obvious they can't have been claiming that Queen were the best selling music video act on a worldwide basis because other acts had sold more than 2,000,000 by then, including Michael Jackson and Madonna.

Queen being the best selling music video act in England (not worldwide) makes far more sense, they certainly were (at least by 1995 and perhaps they still are to this date). But then in that case: did they really sell 2,000,000 in the UK alone by 1995? I have seen some fascinating numbers but I'm not sure if I can get there with my estimates, to be honest.

Or maybe that press release, like many others, was just wrong.

Admittedly, a worldwide total of 2,000,000 sounds a bit small, for such a successful video act at least; but as a UK tally, it sounds like a bit high in the same way.

                                                  What do you think?

I will try to post some UK estimations.

                                                  Comment

                                                  • I think the figure of 2,000,000 VHSs sold worldwide is very small. On the other hand, 2,000,000 only in UK is very big.
I remember that, a while ago, you posted an article claiming Greatest Flix II had sold 300,000 copies only in UK: an impressive number.
I suppose also Wembley, Box of Flix and Greatest Flix I could have sold a good amount, but it's difficult they could have reached 2,000,000 units only in UK.
