    We have now:

    1981- Greatest hits 1- 980,000
    1989- The miracle- 35,000
    1991- Greatest hits 2 560,000
    1995- Made in Heaven- 70,000
    1997- Queen rocks- 35,000
    2000- The Platinum collection- 70,000

This certifications appears to add 1,715,000. However, thheir record label announced that Greatest hits has sold over 1,000,000, and their sales before 1984 weréní counted. I think this album could be at about 1,150,000.

So Queen may have sold between 2,5 and 3 M in Australia. that´s very good then.

WE WILL ROCK YOU AUSTRALIAN CAST ANNOUNCED

....Michael tells Undercover “The show itself came about after Ben Elton and Paul Roberts (who manages Ben) went and saw Mama Mia! They thought what a great idea, why didn’t someone else think of this and who else could we use for a model based on a rock group catalogue. They thought Beatles, no, Stones no and Ben said what we need is group who people sing along to when they are drunk. Just at that moment a drunk walked by singing “We Are The Champions’. He immediately went “Queen”. That’s how the show came about. My involvement came about because I toured Ben Elton three times and I’ve worked with his management company. There is an association there”.

Michael Coppel has been involved with the London production from the start. “18 months has been my involvement with the London production” he says. “I was involved 6 months before it opened. It came together very quickly. After it became a success in London, we thought where could we take it next? In Australia, Queen have sold nearly 3 million albums that we can count. EMI’s records aren’t ideal. We thought one of the biggest countries in the world for Queen was Australia and it is an English language production, so easy to do. Ben loves Australia stays here half the year and he decided he wanted to direct the Australian production”.

We Will Rock You features 24 Queen hits set in the future when music is banned and kids are the rebellion, fighting against the all powerful Globalsoft Corporation which controls their lives and feeds them a diet of synthesised pop.

The Australian production starts August 7 at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne. The cast begin rehearsal on June 10.

Based on information known - I assume that the 3M is EMI sales only from 84 up to May 2003!

    • Thta´s amazing. But their albums wren´t successful enough to sell that many since 1984, so i guess it was an estimation based on charts performance or something.

      • I'd estimate roughly 4m Album sales for Australia - remember over 30 years of sales -15 studio albums, plus live albums.
The Greatest Hits albums have probably sold 2 million on their own - due to EMI's underestimate of Greatest Hits sales.

Anyway Queen in this weeks UK album charts are:

        107. (86) GREATEST HITS I II & III (Queen)
        160. (139) GREATEST HITS (Queen)

On US Top Pop Catalog Chart

Queen Greatest Hits 15 (17) - total weeks on combined chart - 688.
This should hopefully be recertified by the RIAA soon as being 9 times platinum - must be selling nearly 10,000 a week at that position!

        • Another Queen Live Album out this October/November.

Queens Live At Montreal Concert from 1981 is to be released this fall on both CD and DVD format. Although I would rather them have released the Queen Singles Box Set or much more part 1 of the Queen Anthologies its another one for the collection.

Just wished they would release a 70s concert.

Is anyone else a bit surprised that they still have Greatest Hits as well as the Platinum Collection in the Top 200 UK Album charts?

I believe these days only the top 5 on the catalog chart scan anything near 10,000 copies. GH is likely scanning around 6,000 copies a week at that position.

If I remember correctly GH was certified 8 x platinum last year, and GH scans around 300-400K a year. So I think an update will have to wait another year or two.

Dane I also believe that GH is currently scanning about 6000 copies a week. Gh was certified 8P last year just after LAWS and on fire DVds were certified Hollywood is not very consistant in reviewing their catolog my contact at holywood had stated that they have no policy on certification catolog albums - so it happens at random.
BUT early dec 2002 GH was certified 7P and scanned in:
(missing a number for 2003 but cat chart performance was good for that year)
              2004 399,572
              2005 435,000
              2006 327,000
average of 7446 per week for that period. from early dec02 to 06 is about 211 weeks. if we take 7446 for the period we get 1.571.106(if we take 6000 for this year about 26 weeks or so that is 156K
If WWRY version is considered/counted (587k 17-3-2007)as the same release then it is already overdue for 9P

Thanks for the information Dane and Braca - much appreciated. So if it sells 6,000 week in, week out, then it would always qualify for the Top 200 Billboard chart (assuming Catalog titles were included of course?). So at the moment it actually outsells U2's new greatest hits which is on about 4,000 per week!

I think that the Queen Greatest Hits We Will Rock You Edition is classed as a seperate release because as you quite rightly said if its 610,000 (according to latest estimates end of June '07) sales were added then it would definately take the combined sales to over 9 times Platinum. If this is the case though surely The We Will Rock You edition qualifies for Gold Status? :-?

Anyway I just want Queen II to finally get a sales award in the US - its the only Studio album apart from the Miracle never to go even Gold - surely it must have outsold Flash Gordon?

                  • hi Edwood - ref the Flash G album gold status it is now the 2nd time that it up there (RIAA DBASe is down again). Also QOL, 'as it began' and the OFF fanclub all have this album listed as GOLD (and QueenII and the miracle) Considering the back sales for Flash and Queen II I would say that GOLD is correct but that's just an "educated" guess.

having said that Basil (by PM) has informed of the following "Joel Whitburn's books are more reliable than the riaa site (old or new) and this one (FG) isn't listed."

                    • Very good points here. I have the total soundscan since 2003, so here i put them:

2003: 302,000 (from february to december of that year)
                      2004: 399,000
                      2005: 435,000 (I also read 416,000)
                      2006: 327,000

And the 2004 issue sold 613,000.

This gives a total of 2,074,000 in thse years.

The album was certfied in 2002 7 platinum, so it has definetely sold over 9 millions in USA.

About "Queen 2", well even "Queen" (that reached number 84 on the charts) was certified gold in 1977. the album charted at a high position, and sold more from 1991 to 2005. So according to this I personally think that both albums are at about 700,000 in USA but it´s difficul to estimate sales.

                        Good Figures HUR!
I wonder if Queens Greatest Hits will continue to sell so much in 5-10 years in the USA.
The sales are surprisingly high when you think that they also have the We Will Rock You Edition which i think has also been in the Top Pop Catalog chart recently as well.

Regarding other Queen Collections in the US -There is also Classic Queen which has sold over 3.2 million according to soundscan as of 2006, the Platinum Collection, Stone Cold Classics and also Greatest Hits I and II - (this last album was recently at number 3 on the Top Pop Catalog chart and also topped the Top Digital album chart but then disappeared without trace! - it does always seem to be selling more if you look on Amazon.coms site - sometimes nearly reaching the top 200 position - i dont think it is far off selling 1m - which will make it double platinum as its a double disc release )

I also think those figures for Queen I and Queen II are about right - they would have sold alot due to Queens High Popularity in the USA in 1975-1982 period and Queen II is always seen as a cult favourite - Beck and Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumkins) rate this very highly.

Also this week in Canadian Hard Rock/Metal Chart (this weeks chart in brackets):

                        24 55 46 (64) GREATEST HITS-WE WILL ROCK YO
                        QUEEN

                        552 27 22 (31) CLASSIC QUEEN
                        QUEEN

                        560 13 13 (14) GREATEST HITS
                        QUEEN ( HOL )

                          • Queens chart positions this week in UK album chart!

                            162. (107) GREATEST HITS I II & III (Queen)

                            OUT. (160) GREATEST HITS (Queen)

In US Top Pop Catalog Chart:

                            Queen's Greatest Hits 18 (15)
Total weeks on combined chart - 689

Looks like the above album will join the Elite group of albums in Pop Catalog Chart that charts over 500 weeks in this chart. Should still be selling about 6-7,000 copies a week. I wonder what Queen sell in total in the US, given that Queens Greatest Hit 1 and 2 sells more on Amazon.Com and the fact their 15 studio albums are still strongish sellers for an old 'classic' rock band - 20,000 a week?

Heres a brief part of a very rare Queen track called 'Face It Alone' - supposed to be on the upcoming Queen Anthology Boxsets in 2009.
Alledgedly its supposed to be a 10 minute ballad in 3 parts - a bit like Bohemian Rhapsody crossed with 'Save me'
I think the clip on Youtube just repeats about 10 secs continously though! Ive heard that no-one has got anywhere near the full track!

The Album was deleted in 1995 in the UK. It was then re-titled as 'Queen at the BBC' and re-released on Hollywood records, since 1995 the Hollywood Records version is the only version available. It is not technically a UK release anymore but an American Import and as such I/we have no figures for it as they will be audited/charged through Hollywood Records in the US".

                                            • Thanks for the UK album totals braca and Jimmypages59.

The Game's Uk album sales for July 1992 to end of 2006 are quite low - 76,154 - thought they would be about 100,000. It did go to number 1 in 1980 for 2 weeks though so I suppose it did sell well at the time. I wonder what the sales of the studio albums were like just after Freddies death in late 1991-early to mid 1992?

Live Killers sales for the same period seem quite good - should have gone platinum as released in 1979 and was only live album until 1986 when Live magic came out.

Queen Rocks sales of 328855 are again a bit higher then expected. It didnt seem to chart very well at the time and seemed to be ignored - I suppose its just because everyone compares it to the huge success of the Greatest Hits albums. There was also supposed to be a Queen Rocks Volume 2 but that never saw the light of day!

Very surprised at Queen at the beeb sales!
It wasnt even an official release by Queens record company - EMI/Parlophone. It was released on the Band of Joy Record Company and only reached number 63 or 67 for a week so surprised that it sold nearly 50,000 in just 5 years although i think 150,000 sales in total is a bit optimistic eh Braca?

As regards the new US Queen compilation in Walmart - A to Z of Queen im surprised at this. Surely they have enough US compilations already and they all seem to be selling very well still!

Queen in UK Top 200 Albums chart this week:

                                              • Just looked at the Argentina Top 100 Albums thread - couldnt believe that all 3 Greatest Hits Albums by Queen are in the current top 100 chart!

95 GREATEST HITS VOL III QUEEN EMI
38 (86) GREATEST HITS VOL II QUEEN EMI
                                                16 (33) GREATEST HITS QUEEN EMI !!!!!!

I wonder what type of sales these albums had and at what level their totals are?!

They must be one of the biggest selling acts in Argentina even including their own domestic acts!
