Well, thanks to update in Germany, here is how Queen "Greatest hits 1" should look like in Europe then, a new estimation again:

    UK: 5,500,000
    Netherlands: 700,000
    Switzerland: 300,000
    Germany: 1,800,000
    Italy: 400,000
    France: 600,000
Spain: 450,000 (including 1282,700 CDs from january 1985 to december 2004)
Austria: 250,000 (it reached #25 this year, charting during 7 weeks inside the top 75)
Finland: 70,000 (including 55,000 CDs sold since 1984)
    Sweden: 150,000

Total for these 10 countries: 1,220,000

Adding the rest, by using the factor of 1,2 (like MJDangerous), we now get 12,300,000 roughly in Europe.

I´m still surprised of how low it sold since 1993 in Germany, that means at most 300,000 shipped in the last 15 years. You would have expected to be much higher, no?.

    USA: 9,800,000
    Canada: 1,500,000
    New Zealand: 190,000+
    Australia: 1,200,000
    Japan: 600,000
    Korea: 600,000
    South Africa: 100,000+
    Singapore: 20,000+
    Honk Kong: 10,000+
    Argentina: 700,000
    Brazil: 250,000+
    Mexico: 250,000+

    Total worldwide: maybe around 30,000,000

This looks possible considering the album had officially reached the 25 million mark by september 2002, and then kept selling around 5 million since then (including over 3,000,000 in USA and Canada alone).

Please guys, any consensus?. I posted them several times, and I see very little reply, any opinion?. Maybe MJD?. Someone?.

Yes, I would really like to see sales for these DVDs to complete my figures:

    -The Freddie Mercury tribure concert
-Made in heaven - The films
    -A night at the opera

And, if possible, an update for their first "Greatest hits 1", including sales until this year (if no until december 2007). Thank you, mate.

Thank you, mate. I´m glad you posted this update. So yes, maybe roughly 1,760,000 by now. It wasn´t available through clubs, apparently, that´s the reason why I thoght it was slightly higher. Thank you, again.

    Some totals:

    Bohemian Rhapsody: 1,393,104
    We Will Rock You: 1,168,000
    We Are The Champons: 673,046
    Under Pressure: 502,437

Another One Bites The Dust certfied gold in 2005 for sales of 100,000.

Total for just 5 songs (not updated most fo them): 3,836,587

In Japan, I Was Born To Love You 500,000.

Very little about UK, but "Don´t Stop Me Now" sold about 120,000 copies so far, and "Bohemian Rhapsody" around 100,000. Total digital sales probably around 400,000 up to now.

    From Brianmay.com:

"These award were been given in respect of over 4 million sales combined of Greatest Hits I (1,800,000 units = 7 x Gold) & Greatest Hits II (2,200,000 units = 9 x Gold) in GERMANY only. Both albums are featured on the award."

Glad they give us an updated number. But those sales are a disappointment to me.

Firstly, "Greatest hits 2" at 9 gold should be 2,250,000 in reality (maybe a typo on the site), but I thought this one had sold easily 2,500,000 (enough for a further platinum). Even onn german television, back in 2003, a figure of 2,7 M was claimed and I believed it. The album had massive runnings after its certification, even peaking at #19 in 1997 and spending loads of weeks.

"Greatest hits 1" only shipped 300,000 since 1993, even strong too, charting many weeks in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2006.

Also "Greatest hits 1" shipped even more than "Greatest hits 2", when it is obviously below as a catalog seller...

I bet that the "Platinum collection" dropped out of the 200 this week. But I don´t care, personally, it has already sold roughly 100,000 copies so far, whereas their first "Greatest hits 1" around 50,000 until 2 weeks back (maybe a bit less though), which makes it look like it will reach about 100,000 by about november (with this new boost added in).

All in all, by the end of the year, their two lead compilations will have sold 200,000+. Add "Greatest hits 2", "Live at wmebley ´86", "A night at the opera" and maybe even "Greatest hits 3", and their total catalog sales will be decent again (although I really doubt they will chart inside the annual top 50 this year). I think that "The cosmos rocks" will be excluded from their total...but well, who cares?.

Im surprised that Greatest Hits 2 re-charted with The Platinum Collection still being available - I wonder if it will still be in the charts next week though?

C-lebrity IMHO is one of the worst tracks on the album - they should have released 'Small' instead - im sure that would have done better..... :-?

Wow, great for "Graetest hits 2". First week inside the top 75 since 2000, just unbelievable. Probably even "Greatest hits 3" entered the top 200 in UK. It would be great if musicweek gives updated numbers for these albums (for instance, how much they sold this decade, or this year so far). Thank you for posting.

I have now re-estimated Queen´s "Greatest hits 1" in Netherlands, and used 155,481 (CDs only) for the period between 1994 and february 2004. That´s an average of roughly 15k by year (which doesn´t necessarily mean it sells uniformly the same each year). If it was at 155,481 with average by february 2004, that would bring to about 215,000 copies sold from 1994 to this year so far (just counting CDs sales). Adding cassettes and vinyls for the period, it is more likey at 250,000. So by periods:

    1981-1982: 150,000
    1991-1992: 150,000
    1993: 40,000
1994-this year: 250,000 (including at least 155,481 CDs only).

Combining all the above total (590,000) with catalog sales between 1983 and 1990, I have it now at 700,000 copies there.

So my overall estimations for this album in Europe now looks like this:

    UK: 5,500,000
    Netherlands: 700,000
    Switzerland: 300,000
    Germany: 2,000,000+
    Spain: 450,000
    Italy: 400,000
    Sweden: 150,000
Finland: 70,000 (including 55,000 CDs sold since 1984)
Austria: 250,000 (it charted at #25 this year)
    France: 600,000

This is roughly 10,420,000 overall. Adding the rest of the continent, like MJDangerous, that takes up to about 12,500,000.

    This is what I posted:

New Zeland (up to 2003, according to EMI):

    Greatest Hits 142,436 9 x Platinum

    Greatest Hits 2 151,458 10 x Platinum

    Greatest Hits 3 16,732 1 x Platinum

    Greatest Hits 1 & 2 65,719 4 x Platinum

    Platinum Collection 20,652 1 x Platinum

    The Works 24,041 1 x Platinum

    A Kind Of Magic 35,023 2 x Platinum

    Live Magic 22,895 1 x Platinum

    The Miracle 29,044 1 x Platinum

    Made In Heaven 54,062 3 x Platinum

    Innuendo 15,415 1 x Platinum

    Live At Wembley 17,208 1 x Platinum

    Queen rocks - 7,500 (gold)
    The game - 10,000 (1980, gold)

There is an important remark about Spain. In december 2004, EMI provided the following information from their very first ever cd there in 1985 (Greatest hits, re-issued from 1981) to their last:

    1985 – Greatest hits I - 182,700
    1986 – A kind of magic - 207,695
    1986 – Live magic – 109,418
    1989 – The miracle – 164,969
    1991 – Innuendo – 137,861
    1991 – Greatest hits II – 660,606
    1992 – Live at wembley ’86 – 202,278
    1994 – Greatest hits I & II – 198,260
    1995 – Made in heaven –281,785
    1997 – Queen Rocks – 74,203
    1999 – Greatest hits III – 85,633
    2000 – Platinum collection – 197,591
    2004 – Queen on fire – 33,000

    Total: 2,536,000

However, in a press release, they stated that their total albums sales (cds only yet again) was as much as 3,200,000. I hold an email from EMI marketing Spain, claiming that the others 664,000 were sold via their old albums switched to cd. This actually means that their old album put together (counting "Queen" from 1973 to "The works") sold combined a minimun of 664,000 cds only which would mean roughly 700,000 copies sold counting all formats (cds, cassettes and vinyls). Those were re-issued in 1986, so this figures goes back to that year. So around 700k for 12 albums (10 studio albums, one live albums, and 1 soundtrack) between 1986 to 2004. Not that it is particularly strong but pretty decent in my opinion.

Here some official numbers from EMI for Australia:

    1984 - A night at the opera - 70,000 (since 1984)
    1984- Greatest hits - 1,000,000 (since 1984)
    1984 - The works - 70,000
    1986 - A kind of magic - 70,000
    1986 - Live magic - 35,000
    2000 - Platinum collection 70,000

"A night at the opera" was released in 1975 and "Greatest hits 1" in 1981. However, those sales above are since 1984...

This is all thanks to Braca.
