Queen + Paul Rodgers Support the Call With ANITAIDS Concert In Kharkov Freedom Square

Queen + Paul Rodgers will head a massive outdoor concert in one of Europe’s biggest public squares ahead of the start of their forthcoming European tour to support Ukraine’s Anti-Aids campaign.

Promoting the message “Don’t let AIDS to ruin your life!”, Queen will perform a free concert in Kharkov’s historic Freedom Square on September 12 . The concert is expected to attract more than 100,000 to Europe’s second-largest city-centre square.

Supported by Queen’s own HIV AIDS charity, The Mercury Phoenix Trust, the free concert is being organized by the Elena Franchuk ANTIAIDS Foundation and is being devoted to the fight against AIDS in the Ukraine.

Coming just a week after the birthday of their lost lead singer – Freddie Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1991 – the concert aims to reinforce the message of the Ukrainian ANTIAIDS Foundation that the need to protect ourselves and our families remains as urgent as ever.
The concert will be broadcast live on Ukraine’s Noviy Channel which will reach into homes right across the country. It will be a prelude to the launch the following day on the national channel of a new five year ANTIADS campaign , “On the Edge” being fronted by the Elena Franchuk Foundation which aims to tackle head-on the growing threat of HIV AIDS infection in the country.

For Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor, now joined by legendary rock vocalist and writer Paul Rodgers, the concert is one of many the band has played to address the issue of HIV AIDS. In June the band joined a host of international stars in London’s Hyde Park at the 46664 concert to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday and generate further awareness of the work being done by Mandela’s HIV AIDS organization.

Elena Franchuk, Founder of the ANTIAIDS Foundation said: “We’ve chosen Kharkov for this concert – it is the biggest city of our country after Kiev with a population of 1. 5 million as is at its heart a student city. For this reason it is a perfect setting for the concert: the greatest incidence of new HIV cases is registered among young people between 15-25 living in the big urban areas. After the great success of the Elton John concert we organized in Kiev in the main square in 2007 we decided to take the message of our HIV/AIDS problem not only to the capital cities but to our youth all over Ukraine. I strongly believe there are no better speakers for the cause than the founders of Queen, Brian May and Roger Taylor, joined as they now are by Paul Rodgers.

Freedom Square in Kharkov is the second largest square in Europe and the sixth largest square in the world. A week before the concert a large stage with the Queen + Paul Rodgers branded podium will be set up at the center of Kharkov, where the band will step up on September, 12.

Queen + Paul Rodger’s appearance will be the focus of addressing a public audience on the issue of AIDS. Everyone attending the concert will have an opportunity to receive a special gift of thanks from the band – the opportunity to download on their cell phones through Bluetooth the ringtone of their hit Say It’s Not True, penned especially for Nelson Mandela’s 46664 Aids Foundation and the current single C-lebrity.

During their visit to the Ukraine Queen + Paul Rodgers will join Elena Franchuk at a special press conference in Kiev on September 11 and a visit to Red University where they will discuss with a group of students the subject of world efforts being made to address HIV/AIDS.

In the lead up to the concert over 200 volunteers will work at the square before the concert – mainly students of Kharkov’s Universities – distributing free condoms and information about HIV/AIDS. A few days before the concert social the square will host a newly created poster exhibition devoted to the HIV/AIDS problem.

As a further initiative entered into with city government support, volunteers will be engaged at five subway stations and in fifteen Universities in Kharkov. Graffiti painters will also make their contribution into this campaign – they will decorate walls at the Freedom Square with the drawings devoted to the AIDS problem.
But the collaboration of Elena Franchuk ANTIAIDS Foundation and Queen is not limited to the September concert. The two are further discussing the possibility of issuing a commemorative special live concert DVD which will contribute after the event to the charitable projects involved in the fight against AIDS.

Gjermund, is this the first ever number one achieved by Queen in any chart in Norway?. I think so. The only Queen related release that topped the charts over there was Freddie Mercury´s Living on my own, wasn´t it?.

Thank you. The didn´t say that in the email, if I remember. Still, most of the certification posted were obviusly after 1993, so that doesn´t make a big difference.

emimusic Denmark reported in Apr 2004 that their dbase showed the following:
    Platinum Collection 1x Platinum
The Works ( LP) 1x Gold
    Queen Rock's vol 1 1xGold
    Greatest Hits vol 3 1 x platinum
Made In heaven 2 X Platinum
    The Miracle 1x Platinum
    Greatest Hits Vol 1 - 2 X platinum (so 100K)
    Greatest Hits vol 2 - 5 x Platinum (so 250K)
incomplete but it is something! In many cases emi sales data does not go back that far (electronically that is - as in the netherlands and spain etc). so sales of GH 1 may very well be higher than 100K.

Thank you. So far, it has charted in 3 different countries this year. Easily their biggest "catalog" song, after "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "We will rock you".

"Platinum collection" also charted in the top 100 for a couple of weeks this year, which is pretty good.

A bit surprised the song couldn´t enter the singles chart. In UK and Ireland, it was used for another TV spot too, recently in this year, and it kind of boosted its digital sales. It reached #47 in UK (and has been the entire year inside the top 200), and #26 in Ireland, which is very huge.

Posted on Brianmay.com and QueenonlineRESS RELEASE: THE RHAPSODY IS SPREADING…

    THE RHAPSODY IS SPREADING…
QUEEN & BEN ELTON’S “WE WILL ROCK YOU”
    SET TO ROCK THE UK

Regional Tour for 2009 while continuing record-breaking London Dominion Run

Like the band itself, which begins a massive European tour mid-September, the smash Queen & Ben Elton’s hit musical, “We Will Rock You” is set to rock the UK with a 43-week regional tour next year.

Having proved its enormous rapport with the public by achieving the distinction of becoming the longest running musical ever staged at the West End’s Dominion Theatre where it is currently playing its seventh year, the musical will rock across the UK from March 2009 while continuing to play in London. The Dominion production is presently booking until October 2009.

The touring production of We Will Rock You opens at Manchester’s Palace Theatre mid-March for a twelve week season. It will then transfer to play Sunderland Empire, Birmingham Hippodrome, Bristol Hippodrome, and ends 2009 with ten weeks at Edinburgh Playhouse commencing early November.

The tour is a Phil McIntyre Entertainment presentation with Queen Theatrical Productions.

Announcing the tour, Queen’s Brian May said: “We are excited to be able, finally, to send a brand new top class WWRY company out on tour around the UK. We are completely hands on, and will be visiting! The Mother Ship, in the Dominion Theatre, London, will be rockin' on all the while, keeping the home fires burning, until further notice!”

The touring production reaches local UK theatres carrying with it an impressive legacy: when it first became news that one of Britain’s most phenomenally successful comedy writers Ben Elton was teaming up with legends of rock, Queen, for a musical there was much speculation on what such a unique collaboration would turn out. Especially when screen icon Robert de Niro became so impressed after attending the original workshop that his company Tribeca came on board as American partner.

The result was a new chapter in theatre history – “We Will Rock You” - a rock ‘theatrical’ which defied all comparisons and has gone on to rock London’s West End and theatres around the world for the past six years to an audience of well beyond 6 million.

With the London production alone having been seen by close on 4 million people, played over 2300 performances, and grossed more than £100 million at the box office, “We Will Rock You” is well on the way to becoming one of the most successful rock musicals ever.

Says producer Phil McIntyre: “We are bursting with excitement; at last provincial audiences will get a true rock extravaganza. We can't wait to see the first night reactions throughout the country. We Will Rock You will rock the UK; it is the biggest and best rock theatrical!”

The show brings together a production and design team behind some of the biggest international theatre productions and rock tours.

Production designers Mark Fisher and Willie Williams have created set designs for Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Janet Jackson, and the acclaimed multi-media shows for U2.

Costume Designer Tim Goodchild has already achieved three Olivier Awards for his work in the West End. Choreographer Arlene Phillips has shown her distinctive style in some of the biggest stage musicals of the past two decades, including Starlight Express, Grease and Saturday Night Fever. Bobby Aitken (Grease and Mamma Mia!) is Sound Designer.

And with Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor as music supervisors, and behind the cast "a band without parallel in the theatre, reflecting the true power of the mighty Queen” you’d be right to expect “We Will Rock You” to rock as fiercely as the best of Queen’s concerts.

Writer Ben Elton has fashioned a hilarious futurist comedy around more than 24 of Queen’s biggest hit songs delivered in a show that boasts the scale and spectacle that marked Queen’s live performances.

“This show is all about legend,” says Ben Elton. “We take the legend of Queen and create our own fantastical story of young kids battling the might corporations who want to suppress their individuality and their love of music. They need a hero who can help them in their struggle, and we have two – the dreamer Galileo and the sassy rock chick Scaramouche. Guess who ends up winning?”

Says Brian May: “The amazing bonus is that Ben's script subtly works as a metaphor too. People definitely come out of the theatre feeling that in a strange way they now know us, Queen, and our struggle, our journey.”

And Roger Taylor: “Creating the show with Ben was very much a three way thing. Which was great, because Ben has such a great active mind and has been a great pleasure to work with. He has a great fertile mind that never ever stops churning out ideas. He’s written a fantastic idea for the sequel. I counted 23 more hits he can put in it. Let’s see if people like this one first!”

Public sale of tickets begins from September 15 – September 22 depending on theatre.

We Will Rock You – not just a show, but a promise!

In addition to the London West End production We Will Rock You has already completed over 100 shows in Melbourne and in Sydney, and opened in Japan, Spain, Las Vegas, Russia, Germany, South Africa, Switzerland, Austria and throughout Asia. The current Toronto production has become something of a phenomenon. Originally scheduled to play seven weeks, the show was quickly extended again and again ultimately playing 61 weeks at the Canon Theatre before transferring to the Panasonic theatre where it continues to run.

The show has developed an extraordinary devotion from fans: on Tuesday, January 25, 2005, Londoners, Kevin Morrissey and Julie Daw, were married in Las Vegas where they had traveled to see the production there of their favorite musical, “We Will Rock You”. For their honeymoon evening festivities, they again sat through the show at the Paris Resort, Las Vegas. It was the 61st time for Kevin and the 42nd time for Julie seeing “We Will Rock You”. Following the show, the couple shared their honeymoon celebrations with the cast who made their evening by providing a backstage tour. The couple rounded off their honeymoon by spending their final night in Vegas again at the show.
