Queen Achieves Million-Air Honours at 2020 BMI Awards London and 10th No.1 UK Album in Same Week - Sony/ATV Celebrates Queen’s Airplay Milestones and 10th Number One Album

Today, Sony/ATV Music Publishing paid tribute to the iconic rock band Queen and its significant achievements in the Million-Air awards category at the 2020 BMI London Awards, which were announced on October 5. The Million-Air awards recognize iconic songs that have reached a million or more broadcast performances by UK and European songwriters and publishers.

Queen had an impressive three songs honoured in this year’s Million-Air awards. With 7 million total performances, both “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and “We Will Rock You” have earned roughly 40 years of continuous play, and at 6 million performances, “We Are The Champions” has garnered over 34 years of continuous play. The combined airplay total on Queen’s three awarded singles is an astounding 20 million.

The news comes as the band celebrates their 10th number one album in the UK with 'Live Around The World', which was their first number one album in 25 years since 1995’s Made in Heaven. 'Live Around The World' is a compilation album which features highlights from the last decade of touring with prominent singer Adam Lambert.

Receiving the news, Brian May and Roger Taylor responded saying, “What a welcome surprise! It means a lot to us that our music is still connecting, and now reaching a whole new generation of rock fans out there. We hope to be back out there soon.”

I think LATW will probably go Gold in the UK (100.000) once Christmas has passed, expect it to climb back a bit. Albums these days though just don't sell. If you look at the UK top 100 how many of those albums are compilations or classic albums from the 20th century its becoming more and more. The top 10 is constantly being filled with new releases that don't hang around. Queen's Greatest hits as well as compilations by Fleetwood Mac and Elton John have been close to the top 10 for so long now. Expect them to climb back after Christmas. It proves that the new medium to promote music is through movies. I think there will be lots more music biopics coming up in the future.
