AC/DC’s ‘Power Up’ Charges In at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart
    By Keith Caulfield
    11/22/2020

Nearly 40 years after its initial release, Queen’s Greatest Hits reaches the top 10, as the set bolts from No. 36 to No. 8 with a 133% gain in units earned (rising to 36,000). The surge is largely owed to massive vinyl sale on Nov. 14 at Walmart, where all vinyl albums in-store were marked down to $15.

In the week ending Nov. 19, Greatest Hits sold 24,000 copies across all formats (up 737%), with vinyl LPs accounting for 23,000 (up 1,006%) of that sum.

The vinyl sales were so big for Greatest Hits, it’s the top selling vinyl album in the U.S. for the week (and jumps 20-1 on Billboard’s Vinyl Albums chart) and has the second-largest sales week of 2020 for any vinyl release. It’s runner-up only to the debut frame of Tame Impala’s The Show Rush, which sold 26,000 vinyl copies on the chart dated Feb. 29.

Greatest Hits was first released in October of 1981 and has been reissued multiple times over the ensuing decades. Before this week, a 1992 edition of Greatest Hits brought the album closest to the top 10, peaking at No. 11 on Oct. 10, 1992.

Greatest Hits includes songs like “Bohemian Rhapsody” (a No. 9 Billboard Hot 100 hit in 1976, later peaking at No. 2 in 1992 thanks to its revival from its inclusion in the box office hit Wayne’s World), “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” (No. 1, 1980) and “Another One Bites the Dust” (No. 1 in 1980). Greatest Hits marks the ninth top 10 album for the band, joining the Bohemian Rhapsody soundtrack (No. 2 in 2019), Greatest Hits I, II & III: The Platinum Collection (No. 6, 2019), Classic Queen (No. 4, 1992), The Game (No. 1, 1980), Jazz (No. 6, 1979), News of the World (No. 3, 1978), A Day at the Races (No. 5, 1977) and A Night at the Opera (No. 4, 1976).

Press Release: 'Greatest Hits' Skyrockets to No.8 on US Billboard Chart

ALMOST 40 YEARS AFTER ITS RELEASE, THE 9X PLATINUM-SELLING COMPILATION CONTINUES TO REACH NEW HEIGHTS

QUEEN’S GREATEST HITS HITS NO. 1 ON BILLBOARD’S VINYL ALBUMS CHART

ALBUM’S TRACKS HAVE BEEN STREAMED MORE THAN 1 BILLION TIMES IN THE U.S. ALONE

QUEEN’S GREATEST HITS ENTERS INCREDIBLE 413th WEEK ON BILLBOARD 200

(Los Angeles, CA - Monday, November 23, 2020) – For the first time since its release in 1981 and after a jaw-dropping 412 weeks on the chart, Queen’s landmark Greatest Hits compilation has hit the Top 10 of the Billboard 200, rocketing from No. 36 to No. 8. Its previous peak was No. 11, which it hit in 1992. The 9x Platinum-selling career-spanning collection also hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Vinyl Albums Chart with the second-largest sales week of 2020 for any vinyl release.

Spanning Queen's triumphant first act, Greatest Hits includes some of the world's most iconic rock songs, including the stadium-sized symphonic chart-topper “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the most-streamed song of the 20th century around the globe and the most-streamed classic rock song of all time. Other gems featured on this compendium include the roof-raising “We Are The Champions,” the crowd rousing “We Will Rock You,” the tongue-in-cheek “Fat Bottomed Girls,” the stomp-stomp-stomp late 70’s disco inspired “Another One Bites the Dust,” to the finger-snapping jukebox retro-rock homage “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and the soaring, impassioned, gospel-tinged “Somebody To Love.”

Queen recently teamed with Target and Walmart for two separate Greatest Hits vinyl exclusives, both being 2-disc LPs, 180 gram, with fans having a choice between ruby blend marble vinyl or red and white-colored vinyl.

In an era dominated by hip-hop and pop, Queen is bigger than ever with a timeless appeal and a new generation of fans. Their recently released live album, Queen + Adam Lambert Live Around The World, shot to No. 1 on the UK’s Official albums chart, their first time topping that chart since 1995’s Made In Heaven.

Greatest Hits marks the ninth top 10 album for Queen, joining the Bohemian Rhapsody soundtrack (No. 4, 1976). This past Saturday marked the 45th anniversary of the release of A Night at the Opera.

Queen’s Greatest Hits remains the best-selling album of all time in the UK.

              • Braca thanks for that. This has been a major bone of contention for years. The Original GH was released in 1981 and did go platinum. I have no idea how many copies it sold in the US. GH today that is certified 8x platinum and now possibly 9x platinum was released in 1992. The folks at Hollywood records started the sales from zero that year. So if you add them together I’m sure it would easily pass 10 or maybe 11 x platinum.

                • The 8p gh version on riaa has a OCTOBER 1, 1981 release date and rec com is elektra
If I remember correctly gh was posted under electra label and certified platinum later riaa certified gh version from hollywood separately. both were included on the riaa database.
Hollywood reviewed in 2002 and after that just 1 GH was listed at 7P upgraded to 8p in 2006

there been (a additional ) WWRY GH VERSION wich sold well over 1 million and was never certified. Based on (Hollywood and riaa policy these should be added
this year alone GH has sold 800,000 equivalent sales to date, some 630,000 in 2019, 646,000 in 2018.
based on this alone it is close to 12 m. (2006-2017 sales not included)

                  • Yes you’re right but it’s strange that RIAA’s website doesn’t provide information on dates for the multi platinum figures. I remember it taking a long time to get those certifications. A lot of people in the US had bought Classic Queen in 1992 due to Wayne’s World and so it took some time for GH to gain much attention and its sales were pretty slow but consistent. I wish I could see the weekly chart numbers.

                      • When GH was released in 92, it didn’t show up as platinum for a while, I specifically remember that. Why was that?

                        Comment

                        • I've never understood how they managed to get away with lumping the two GHs together, for certification purposes. Is there not some percentage limit on tracks that need to be the same, before albums can be merged.

From my recollection, there are more tracks that are only on one of the GHs, than the tracks that appear on both. In every sense, they are two different Greatest Hits albums and should never have been joined or even allowed to be joined.

I do not know. I guess Hollywood records could not be arsed. As they are not recertifying albums now for Queen. PC needs to be re-certified so should ost borhap.
Flash gorden was certified gold but disappeared.

I think there is an element of streaming included.
but I guess with the physical sales of the single in thev70ties and 90ties it could still have sold about 8m

The thing is though, they certify all the singles. So why not albums?
