Catalog Albums/Billboard 200 Chart Update – July 3, 2021 c/o Miguelito

Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours returns to the top spot on catalog sales for the first time since January 12, 2019, rising 6-1 on the tally and 28-9 on the Top Album Sales chart. It holds off a big charge from Queen’s Greatest Hits, which is up 36-10 on TAS to take the #2 catalog sales spot this week. It’s the third top 10 week on Top Album Sales for Rumours and the tenth for Queen’s Greatest Hits.

Remaining at #1 on the Catalog chart for a ninth consecutive week, and 23rd this year, is Queen’s Greatest Hits, which also rises to its best BB200 ranking of the year (#18). Not far behind is Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours at #24 BB200, good for its ninth straight week as the catalog runner-up.

U.K. MIDWEEKS: QUEEN TO REIGN AGAIN?

Queen’s Greatest Hits (Universal) could return to #1 on the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart for the first time in 40 years on Friday. Over on the singles side, Ed Sheeran looks set for a second week at the top with “Bad Habits” (Atlantic).

Following the release of a special 40th anniversary edition, Queen’s anthology is leading today’s chart update with a 4k+ sales advantage over its closest competitor. 86% of its sales total comes from physical retail. Should the best-of set hold onto its lead, the album will win a fifth total week at #1 (its first run at the top took place over four consecutive weeks in 1981).

Queen's Official Top 20 most-streamed songs
As Queen celebrate the 40th anniversary of their first Greatest Hits album, we reveal the band's most-played songs in the streaming era.

It may be 30 years since the original Queen line-up performed and released music together, but the impact of their music is still fully felt today - and continues to enjoy plenty of chart success.

This week sees Queen release a 40th anniversary reissue of their 1981 Greatest Hits, which could return to Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart for the first time since its original four-week run at the summit.

The collection has regularly appeared in the Top 100 over the years, and hasn't left it since December 2019, spending most of 2021 in the Top 10. View Queen's Official Chart history in full here.

Queen continued to score hits for another ten years after its release, but the 1981 best-of remains their most popular. It's the UK's best-selling album of all time, and the only record to have sold over 6 million copies.

The band's music has successfully weathered several music format changes over the years - vinyl, cassette, CD, downloads, and most recently streaming, where their music has been embraced by a whole new generation. But how does their most-streamed songs in the UK compare to their 1981 greatest hits? Before we reveal the Top 20, some highlights...

Thank God It's Christmas
Released: 1984
UK streams: 20.3 million
A moderate hit for Queen peaking at Number 21, the festive track did not appear on any Queen studio album, featuring only on Greatest Hits III, released in 1999. Last year it re-entered the Top 100 for the first time since its original 1984 release, suggesting it may finally be entering the Christmas music hall of fame.

Love Of My Life
Released: 1979
UK streams: 38.2 million
Despite not being given the proper single treatment (a live version released in 1979 peaked at Number 63) - and not featuring on the UK edition of their 1981 hits album (which was made up of Queen's UK Top 20 singles only, plus We Will Rock You), this sentimental ballad is Queen's 14th most-streamed song, possibly because it is a staple of their Queen + Adam Lambert live shows.

Radio Ga Ga
Released: 1984
UK streams: 67.5 million
A Number 1 hit in 19 countries, Radio Ga Ga peaked at Number 2 for two weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart, stuck behind Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Relax. It's the band's ninth most-streamed song, finishing just ahead of We Are The Champions.

Under Pressure
Released: 1981
UK streams: 111 milion
Queen's lead single from their Hot Space album came about from a random jam session with David Bowie. Although it was a joint project in terms of co-writing and producing, Bowie didn't perform the song until after Mercury's death, at a tribute concert in 1992. The song places fourth on their Top 20 most-streamed with 111 million plays.

Bohemian Rhapsody
Released: 1975
UK streams: 195 million
The only song to have made it to Christmas Number 1 twice. It first topped the Christmas charts in 1975 and pulled it off again 16 years later, after Freddie's death. As a result, it is one of the longest-reigning Number 1 hits of all-time. As well as being Queen's most-streamed, in 2018 it was revealed as the UK's most-played song of the 20th century, finishing ahead of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Olivia Rodrigo's Sour beats Queen's Greatest Hits to Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart

Sour by Olivia Rodrigo scores a fourth week at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart, narrowly fending off Queen’s Greatest Hits collection.

Sour - the UK’s biggest album of 2021 so far - finishes the week just 270 chart sales ahead of Queen’s Greatest Hits, extending Olivia’s reign as the only artist to spend more than a week at Number 1 this year on the Official Albums Chart.

Queen’s record-breaking Greatest Hits enjoys a boost in sales thanks to a 40^th anniversary re-issue. As a result the band lead on physical sales this week, with 78% of their final total made up of vinyl, CD and cassette copies. Queen also land Number 1 on the Official Vinyl Albums Chart with the collection.

I think their record company totally messed up things and failed again. They released limited version 1k, personally signed by band members Brian May and Roger Taylor, which gone in a seconds after it was announced. So why they couldn't release another 1k or 2k??? Did they monitor the situation??? Absolutely losers.
After midweeks result, there were so many news, headlines, interviews with band members, that Queen are heading to No 1 again, and what now??? They got these 270 copies in their faces, I can tell you.

Legendary British band Queen are an astonishing streaming success story – and one of the few ‘deep catalog’ artists to have truly conquered the format.

Queen remain the 38th biggest artist on Spotifytoday, with over 37.6 million monthly listeners. That’s more than Kanye West (35.8m), Beyoncé (32.6m), The Beatles (24.3m), and Jay-Z (21.6m).

Indeed, according to the IFPI, Queen were the world’s fifth biggest revenue-generating recording artist of 2019, and the sixth biggest in 2018.

All this from a band who last released a new studio album 26 years ago (Made In Heaven, 1995).

Now we can reveal the stunning amount of money Queen’s classic music continues to generate in royalties each year.

MBW has trawled back through the annual accounts of Queen Productions Ltd, the UK-based group into which Queen’s turnover is paid each year.

Queen Productions Ltd is jointly and equally owned by the three living Queen founder members – Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon – plus the estate of Freddie Mercury.

The most recent of the firm’s annual accounts, for the 12 months to end of September 2020, was filed late last month.

It reveals that Queen generated £41.95 million ($58.1 million at current exchange rates) in the annual period. The vast majority of this money came from royalties, which amounted to £41.67 million ($57.7 million) in the year.

These royalties will have been derived from a variety of sources, but to put things into context: $57.7 million is the equivalent of the payout an artist might expect to receive if their music was played around 14.4 billion times on Spotify.

An important reminder: what we’re talking about here is the net revenues being pulled in by Queen Productions Ltd – not money that’s yet to wash through a record company or music publisher. (That said, Queen could feasibly be paying its label/publisher partners on a fee basis for their services.)

Streaming services show that, today, Queen’s master recordings are owned by Queen Productions Ltd, and licensed worldwide (ex-US/Canada) to Universal Music. (Queen’s US/Canada recording rights are owned by Disney.) The band’s publishing rights, meanwhile, are a little more complex. They are owned by a separate UK company, Queen Music Ltd, and administered by Sony Music Publishing.

That said, filings for Queen Music Ltd show that it paid out £26.8 million to “entities under the control of [Queen’s members]” during FY2020 – suggesting this music publishing income is likely being paid through to Queen Productions Ltd.

Queen’s mammoth royalties in FY2020 were actually significantly down on what the band pulled in a year earlier.

In FY2019 (the 12 months to end of September 2019), Queen Productions Ltd generated £72.77 million ($100.8m), of which £71.53 million ($99.0m) was from royalties.

Queen’s astronomical success in FY2019 was largely down to one particular reason: the super-successful, Oscar-winning biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which was released in October 2018 (within Queen’s FY2019), and was stuffed with the classic recordings of the band.

STAT OF THE WEEK: QUEEN’S UK COMPANY HAS BANKED OVER USD $180 MILLION FOR THE BAND (AND FREDDIE MERCURY’S ESTATE) IN PURE ROYALTIES OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS.

In its latest filing, Queen Productions Ltd notes that the company’s decline in revenues in FY2020 vs. FY2019 was “expected and can be attributed in part to the success of the film Bohemian Rhapsody“.

However, the filing adds: “Given the success of Bohemian Rhapsody it is anticipated there will be further income from the film in the year ended 30 September 2021 and in the years thereafter, although that is expected to decrease year-on-year.”

In other words, Bohemian Rhapsody’s cinema release provided a one-off spike in revenues for Queen in FY2019, but should now continue to boost revenues to a smaller extent as the years tick by.

(Disclaimer for what you’re about to read: We can’t be 100% sure from the filings if Queen counts any non-music residuals from Bohemian Rhapsody as “royalties” within Queen Music Production Ltd.)

One particularly interesting thing about Queen’s recent revenue history is that even before the Bohemian Rhapsody movie arrived, the band’s income was already jumping up significantly.

So much so that in FY2018, Queen Productions Ltd turned over nearly double what it had just two years prior (£21.94 million in FY2018 vs. £12.34 million in FY2016).

Amid the current fierce music industry acquisitions market, this all begs a vital question: If Queen were to sell their music rights today, what kind of price might it fetch?

A couple of data points to help us: In its latest annual report, Hipgnosis Songs Fund says that its catalog was recently independently valued at $2.2 billion, based on a “multiple of 17.96x historical annual net publisher share income”. The suggestion there, obviously, is that a 17.96 multiple is a reasonable reflection of the market value of gold-standard music publishing rights today.

In the past three years, according to Queen Productions Ltd, the band’s rights have generated some £134.5 million ($186 million) in royalties. That’s an average across these three years of $62 million per annum.

This figure obviously represents income from Queen’s recorded music as well as music publishing.

It’s also been boosted by that Bohemian Rhapsody release in FY2019. At the same time, Queen’s music continues to command an enviable market share on streaming services, whose contribution to the music industry keeps on growing each year – driving up Queen’s own income.

So, just for fun: A 17.96 multiple on $62 million? That would make Queen’s royalty-bearing rights worth $1.11 billion today.

Bear in mind that it’s not uncommon for a prestige ‘deep catalog’ of music to attract acquisition multiples in excess of 20-times: senior industry sources suggest that Universal Music Group paid a multiple of between 25 and 30 times for the Bob Dylan song catalog last year (for which UMG shelled out over $300 million).

Again, for fun: What if a buyer was willing to pay a 25-times multiple for Queen’s royalty-bearing rights – again, including recorded and publishing rights – based on that $62 million per-year average royalty turnover in the past three years?

You’d be looking at a sale price of just over $1.5 billion.

Regardless, Queen’s members aren’t likely to have any burning financial imperative to sell.

According to their fiscal filings, the owners of Queen Productions Ltd have shared dividends of £47.38 million in just the past three years – including a £20.17 million annual dividend payout in FY2020.

Guaranteed to blow your mind.
