This is about Spain and Queen are the international act that spent most weeks on the spanish album chart. They sold over 5 million copies there.

HUR, at the moment I have no idea what format the Singles Boxset will take - I'm assuming it will contain about 150 tracks - including 'B' Sides, Extended and alternate mixes. I assume a boxset of 10-12 CDs. They should also release a more commercial 2-3 CD set with all 'B' Sides and alternate mixes only which would appeal to more people due to costing less.

I assume to the best of my knowledge that the European tour has now sold out...

It's just initial shipment because of their last successful 1 million seller. So shops had great expectation. Which has nothing to do with chart. weekly sales were different to initial shipments. Probably when it's 10 weeks at #1 still didn't sold even 60-70% of initial shipment (600k).

Yes, that's exactly what it is. Club Dial is one of the 2 music club which represent almost all sales in France by that way, just like Columbia House/BMG Music Club in the US a few years ago.

HUR, it looks like Queen must be one of the best selling International album acts in Italy. Do you know how Queen compare in total sales to other acts there?

Hello Edwood. Well finally. In my opinion, after checking some of my sales figures and estimations, only Pink Floyd sold more than Queen. The highest I come up with them is over 8m+ overall, including three possibly million sellers.

Queen sold around 6m+ with all their releases agter 1980, when they started selling album on the back of "The game" and never stopped since. Before that, there wasnīt much of a chart action to be honest, woth albums like "A day at the races" only peaking at #16 (and 7 weeks in), which is relatevily good but not huge anough. However, like Zago said it takes a while until some big international acts became big so it was normal.

I think that both U2 and Dire Straits were huge (and are still) with 5 millions albums sold each, which denotes their big success, but in my opinion not quite enough to be at the same level as Freddie and the guys.

Genesis, the Rolling Stones and Bee Gees all sold at least 3 million, and Led Zeppelin over 2 millions. I think that the fab four sold hugely, but not as much as Queen.

If we count solo acts, only Madonna has sales to be ahead of them, even if I think that her certifications are exaggerated or "made up" by her fans because they look too high. But they were even accepted by someone as respected as MJD, so they mean something, I gueess.

Freddie Mercury as an act (counting Queen and his solo work) may be the best selling act ever in Italy thugh.

It's just initial shipment because of their last successful 1 million seller. So shops had great expectation. Which has nothing to do with chart. weekly sales were different to initial shipments. Probably when it's 10 weeks at #1 still didn't sold even 60-70% of initial shipment (600k).

I donīt agree with you. I mean, we donīt know if it was immediately certified 6 platinum in Italy, all what we know is they it had sold that much at least by february 1996. The album was released on november 1995, so it may have taken a couple of months to achieve that status. Still 10 weeks at #1 (ncluding the last seven of 1995, even the entire Christmas month) isnīt enough to sell that much?. I mean, you want me to believe it hasnīt sold any other copy (well, shipped) since february?. Obviously, it has sold about 700,000 copies by now, and thatīs a conservative estimation.

Thank you, MJD, So does that mean that Queen sell a lot on catalog through clubs in France?. Could that be one of the reasons why their album arenīt on the official mid-price chart as much as other classic bands?. I donīt see Floyd or the Beatles in the club sales chart. Queen charted with their "Greatest hits 3", "Greatest hits 1", "Platinum collection", "Made in heaven" and a couple of others. So Queen does sell in France. Does that make you change their overall total sales over there?.

Here is a very ambitious proyect. I want to know how much Queen sold in Latin America. First step, what about their official certifications and numbers reported over the press?. César1989, from this forum, provided a couple of certifications for Queen in Colombia recently!!!. Thanks to César, Juan Cristóbal, and Braca, of course.

Also two local compilation: "Ultimate collection" certified platinum in 1998 (30,000) and peaked at #2; and "Grandes éxitos" certified gold (10,000), and peaked at #18 in 2002. Not complete, of couse, buy it is something.

-The Game (1980)

According to Fedepeti, it sold 200,000 copies in Argentina. It was a massive number one over the country, as was the single “Another one bites the dust”. Certified gold in Mexico, even “Innuendo” (a smaller seller worldwide) sold 150,000 in months, so I go with at least 150,000 for this country too.
Based on how strong their tour was in Brazil (and considering they were the first major english band to play in the country, drawing 261,000 people at the Morumbi stadium), I think that we have enough reasons to argue this album sold at least enough for a platinum album in Brazil (which would be 250,000 copies).
Also in Colombia, the single “Another one bites the dust” was #4 on the charts.

Brazil: 250,000
Mexico: 150,000
Argentina: 200,000

I will estimate this album at 750,000 for the entire region.

- Flash (1980)

Certified gold in colombia, for sales of 15,000 copies, we donīt know much about this album, except for the fact this was their lowest selling during the decade. I will assume a minimum of 100k for both Brazil and Mexico (enough for a gold) and 30k for Argentina.

Brazil: 100,000
Mexico: 100,000
Argentina: 30,000
Colombia: 15,000

So around 250,000

- Greatest hits 1 (1981)

This album was strangely certified five times platinum in Argentina (300,000 copies shipped) for the english version, that was released in 1988. It was certified in november 2000. So that makes it an average of 25 k by year. This album was first released in 1981, and Latin America had its own edition, with the song “Love of my life” included (taken from “Live killers”). Adding catalog sales for the missing periods (between 1983 and 1987), and since its last certification from november 2000 up to now, we can pretty much assume this album sold 550-600k on catalog. With its initial sales (it was number one in 1981), it should be at about 650-700k in Argentina.

Also certified platinum in Mexico (250,000 copies), and Brazil (250,000). This last certification was given in 1999. Even if I canīt prove it, it is rather obvious that it was certified for the english version, as much as it was in Argentina. I mean, it is just a question of common sense, it canīt have sold twice as much in Argentina as it did in both Mexico and Brazil combined even if they were particularly big in Argentina. Argentina just canīt have such a big lead over the other markets. But because I canīt prove it, I go like this:

Brazil: 350,000
Mexico: 250,000+
Argentina: 650,000+

So around 1,700,000 for Latin America. Easily one of the best selling albums ever in the region. Personally, I think this album sold 500k+ in both Mexico and Brazil, which would make more sense in regards to its sales in Argentina. But, no source to back it up.



- Hot space (1982)

It was a top ten in Colombia, and went platinum over the country (for 30,000). It didnīt sell much more than “Flash” in the rest of the world, so I will go with similar sales figures to the previous album. So:

Brazil: 100,000
Mexico: 100,000
Argentina: 30,000
Colombia: 30,000

So it sold around 300,000 in the region.

- The works

This album was #1 during 3 weeks in Colombia, and went on to be certified 2 times platinum there (60,000 copies shipped). It was so strong an album, that both “Radio Ga-Ga” and “I want to break free” were #1 singles. The former during 3 weeks, while the second one during 2 weeks. In Brazil, it was certified gold (for sales of 100,000 copies), and was released months before the rock festival “Rock in rio”, which brought the band to play there for the second time. They played in front of 250,000 people during two concerts in Rio Du Janeiro, at the Maracana stadium. The single “I want to break free” was a #1 there. Based on how strong it was in Colombia (and seeing the context where it was released), the certification may look on the low side. We donīt know if there were further awards, but just the fact it was gold. I will estimate it as follows: 150,000 copies for Brazil.
Argentina and Mexico are unknown, yet I will go with the typical numbers (looking at other album with similar sales numbers): 100,000 for Mexico and 60,000 for Argentina (which would enough for a platinum). I do that because albums with similar sales in both markets, like “Innuendo”, sold about that.

Brazil: 150,000
Mexico: 100,000
Argentina: 60,000
Colombia: 60,000

A strong selling album for the band. I will estimate at 400,000 copies.


- A kind of magic (1986)

This album was certified gold in Brazil, as the previous one, and sold at least 100,000. Because “The works” had a similar succes, I will estimate it too at 150,000 in the country. In Colombia, it went #3, and was certified platinum (30,000 copies shipped). Argentina and Mexico, same as above, so:

Brazil: 150,000
Mexico: 100,000
Argentina: 60,000
Colombia: 30,000

So this album sold about 400,000

- Live magic (1986)

Another difficult, like most here. It was certified platinum in Argentina on february 2001, but just for its sales since 1990 (year when the CD came out). So adding catalog sales for the years missing (from 1987 to 1990, and also from early 2001 up to now), we can pretty much say (based on average of copies sold) that it did about 120k+ on catalog. Then adding some initial sales (released in 1986), I will estimate it at 150,000. No information for Brazil and Mexico, but 100k in both is what it probably sold comparing it to others and looking how big it was in Argentina.


So it sold about 400,000 in Latin America.

- The miracle

Very little information on this one, except for the fact it was #1 in Chile during three weeks, with at least 4 months inside the top ten. So very huge, which makes this album look like it sold well. I will estimate it at 300,000 for the region.


- Innuendo (1991)
Some good information for this one. It was certified gold, and was at 150,000 copies sold, in Mexico by july 1992, 17 months after its worldwide release. By now, it should easily be at 200,000 over there.
In Argentina, it received a platinum award (for sales of 60,000 copies) not so long ago, so its total should stand like this. I will say 60,000+. It was also #1 in Chile (while the single “Innuendo” peaked at #2 on the charts based on airplay).
Brazil should be 100,000 at least based on previous sales figures.

So:
Brazil: 100,000+
Mexico: 200,000
Argentina: 60,000+
Chile: #1

So around 400,000 copies.


- Greatest hits 2 (1991)
Simply their biggest selling album in the region (maybe not, if their “Greatest hits 1” is heavily undercertified or if there are missing sales). It is certified 2 platinum award in Brazil in 1997, which means it should be very close to its third award by now, adding back catalog sales. So roughly 750,000.
In Argentina, it went diamond back in 1999, one of the three english album to be awarded with that certification. It had actually sold 507,000. With its strong catalog sales, which are at least as strong as those of Brazil, it is around 650,000 by now.
In Mexico, it was also platinum (250,000). However, we donīt know the date. It was released in 1991, same year as “Innuendo”. Based on the fact that “Innuendo” was at 150,000 by july 1992, and “Greatest 2” was a much stronger success back then, I assume this album was certified platinum back in 1992 or 1993 too. So it should really be at about 500,000 copies by now (enough for a further platinum), which would put it quite at the same level as both Argentina and Brazil (actually, there is no way it sold so low compared to Argentina).

Brazil: 750,000
Argentina: 650,000
Mexico: 500,000+

That makes it about 1,900,000 in just three markets, which would mean it sold 2,300,000 in Latin America.

- Live at wembley ī86 (1992)
This album was certified gold in Brazil, for sales of 100k+. According to the codes on the brazilian topic created by Automaticbr, it is obvious this one sold around 125,000 in Brazil. Also certified platinum in Argentina (was shown on the previous capif site, not now). I will estimate it at 100,000 for Mexico, which is on the low side (considering “Innuendo” sold 200k, and “Live at wembley” sold about the same worldwide and it is a far stronger catalog seller in most markets).

Brazil: 125,000
Argentina: 60,000+
Mexico: 100,000

So around 350,000 over the region. Good result for a 2Cds album.


- Made in heaven (1995)
Another one with good information, although strangely not certified in Brazil. According to a billboard magazine (from an issue on february 1996, a few months after its release), this album had been certified platinum in Argentina and gold in Mexico.
By now, we know for a fact it sold enough a further platinum in Argentina, which means 120,000, back in 2001. So in Mexico, it may very well have sold more that what was indicated on billboard (it was still selling). So I will put at 200,000 for Mexico, because on a worldwide basis “Made in heaven” was bigger than “Innuendo” (twice as big in Argentina) and that one sold 200+k too in Mexico.
No information for Brazil. According to MJD, many albums (studio ones I mean though) sold twice as much in Brazil as they did in Argentina. However, because Argentina was a particularly big market for the band, I will estimate it at just 100,000 copies for Brazil.

So around 500,000 overall.


- Greatest hits 3 (1999)
Certified platium Argentina. Nothing about Brazil and Mexico, but I assume it sold at least enough for a gold award on both countries.

So about 250,000 copies sold for that (relatively) poor album.

- Queen on fire (2004)

It sold at least 10,000 copies in Brazil, and reached #19 in the argentinian nightfortly chart (retail sales). Around 40,000 copies sold.

- Return of the champions (2005)

It sold 15,000 copies in Brazil (reached #9 on the local charts, compoled by a newspaper from San Pablo). Also charted at #49 in Argentina (very poor), so it is at 30,000 in Latin America.

70īs albums

"A night at the opera" sold around 300,000 copies in Argentina according to MJD. Argentina, at the same time, represents as much as a 33% of their Latin America (a particular strong market for the band), so the album probably sold around 1,000,000 in the region.

"A night at the opera" sold around 10 millions worldwide, while their album from 1977, "News of the world", did something like 9m+, which means 90% of what "A night" did, just like the likes of "Sheer heart attack", "Jazz", and "A day at the races" did around 40% of that, while "Queen" and "Queen 2" much less.

So assuming 1,000,0000 for "A night at the opera", this how their other 70īs albums are likely to look like:

-Queen: 250,000
-Quen 2: 250,000
-Sheer heart attack: 300,000
-A day at the races: 400,000
-News of the world: 900,000
-Jazz: 400,000
-Live killers: 300,0000

Combining all, it looks like Queen sold around 12,500,000 in Latin America, while adding missin titles (like other compilations, and live albums like "Queen at the beeb"), probably around 13 millions overall.

Please, those that hate estimations and sales guesses, only read the certifications posted above which are all true.

That chart (of the Club Dial) is very different from a chart like the official one of IFOP. An album can enter right to the top 10 and then disappear from the chart for 1 year. It depends a lot from the price of each album.
For example, Queen's GH III isn't charted anymore because it is priced 'normaly' again, at 22€. At the moment, Led Zeppelin I is at 9,99€, the result is impressive : #3 in the main chart. You never know which artist may re-enter or drop out.

That said, The Beatles have only 2 real albums avalaible on the Club Dial - Sgt Pepper's & Abbey Road, they cost 22-23€ each, Pink Floyd only have one - Dark Side Of The Moon. Which is true in the US is also in France : To buy a Beatles/Pink Floyd album, you should go out to a retailer.

Queen have 11 albums avalaible, but A Night At The Opera and Platinum Collection aren't avalaible. That's the same story for U2, many of their albums are avalaible, but their classic album (Joshua Tree) and their best ofs 80-90 & 90-00 aren't. AC/DC have almost all their albums avalaible, including their Live.
Muse, which are very often on French catalog chart aren't avalaible (except Black Holes), while the Doors, Radiohead, Young's Harvest or Tracy Chapman eponymous album are.
So while in the US, the difference between acts/albums avalaible or not on club is obvious in regard to their soundscan, we can't really argue the same in France, most biggest catalog sellers according to IFOP charts are avalaible on Clubs.

Unfortunately is impossible to do the same thing for Neil Young in Latin America. He is not a good seller like Queen and in two years of researchs I found practically nothing about his charts or sales (I imagine very low sales), in spite of his long career...

Yes, sometimes I complain about Queen and other acts being undercertified, but compared to someone loke Neil Young or David Bowie, to name two, Queenīs certifications look massive really. Hopefully, we will ever able to have more sales numbers for Brazil and Mexico.
