I have Innuendo at 315K in 91. In 92 it hasn't make the year end top 100 artist album chart, so under 120k sold. It sold probably between 80k and 100k.

I see you have something like 8 million for Queen (maybe a bit less if you adjust their 80´s albums), is that good compared to other acts?. Normal?. I don´t ask to start a discussion, but just to know how the band stands in front of other successful international acts and have a good perspective of how big they are or not (no way we can compare them with local acts).
I have never compiled a list of best selling foreign acts in Japan, just checking the ones likely to be among the biggest acts :

    Mariah Carey : 18 millions
The Beatles : Hard to tell exactly, but easily over 15 millions
    Celine Dion : 8m+
    Madonna : 8m
    Bon Jovi : 8m-
    Michael Jackson : 8m-
    Billy Joel : 7,5m
    Eric Clapton : 7m
    Whitney Houston : 7m-
    ABBA : 6,5m
    Aerosmith : 5,5m

            • In UK album charts this week:

              40. (18) THE COSMOS ROCKS (Queen+Paul Rodgers) 3 wks
              43. (37) GREATEST HITS (Queen) 466 weeks on chart - only 12 weeks behind all-time longevity album, Rumours...
              80. (65) GREATEST HITS 2

Jennifer Hudson at number 37 sold 6434 copies so The Cosmos Rocks and Greatest Hits probably sold over 6,000 copies each. Greatest Hits 2 probably sold 2,500 (?) copies...

Music Week is to carry three new catalogue charts when it re-launches this Monday (September 29).

As part of an extensive revamp that will also include new pages dedicated to the live, publishing and media sectors, the magazine will run three new catalogue charts online, with one featured in the magazine on rotation. These are being specially compiled for Music Week by the Official Charts Company.

The Top 20 catalogue rundowns cover studio albums, greatest hits and downloads. Only releases at least two years old will be included.

Music Week editor Paul Williams says, “These charts reflect the growing importance of the catalogue market for today’s music business. While sales of new releases have struggled this year, artists such as Abba and Neil Diamond have enjoyed strong catalogue sales, while retailers such as Zavvi and HMV are increasingly focussing their attentions on catalogue.”

                              Album chart this week

                              #41 - Greatest hits 1 (down from #38)

                              DVD chart

                              #23 - Greatest video hits 1 (6 times platinum)
                              #32 - Live at wembley ´86 (4 times platinum)

This is what Queen sold in the last three weeks in UK, roughly:

                              22/09/08: 38,000
                              29/09/08: 20,000
                              05/10/08: 14,000

This is assuming "The cosmos rocks" did 28,112 + 10,000 + 6,000 in its three weeks on chart so far, which means it probably sold around 44,000 copies overall.

Think back to January of this year. Hardly anyone had heard of Vampire Weekend or MGMT. In the 80s and 90s, these bands would have been lucky to sell 25,000 copies. Yet so far they have sold 311,869 and 180,573 respectively worldwide.

Blockbuster artists may be selling a few percentage less. Guess they'll have to buy mom a smaller mansion this year. But overall sales are much healthier for most of the rest of the artists. I'm curious exactly how much Abba and Neil Diamond sold.

I think labels drop the ball in promoting reissues. There's plenty of good ones, recently including early U2 and Replacements. They'd sell more if they promoted them better.

                                • Queen´s "Live at wembley ´86" at #25 on the back catalog chart in Netherlands.

Last week, I missed that their "Platinum collection" re-entered the charts in Norway at #40 too. Good catalog sales for Queen over there this year. That triple box set had already charted early this year, peaking at #15.

It appears that a 27 year old album is selling more then The Cosmos Rocks.....
