            Top Pop Catalog
            Issue Date: 2009-02-14

This Week, Last Week, Two Weeks Ago, Weeks, Title, Artist, Peak

29 31 13 Greatest Hits: We Will Rock You, Queen 29
            37 35 30 759 Greatest Hits, Queen 2

It's a shame Queen have sales split between these 2 versions as combined I think they would be Top 20 or even Top 10 most weeks.

Well, if you get their certifications from the BPI site, prior to july, 1992, you will notice that Queen were certified for shipments of 8,600,000 (including "Five live ep" as part of their albums sales).

That puts their minimum sales total at 19,292,124 overall. But that doesn't count plenty of sales before 1992, as most of their albums were certified within days of going on sale and never updated after that. For example, "The miracle" was certified platinum 4 days after it was certified, but managed to sell 480,000 in 1989 alone (being one of the best sellers of that year).

Overall, they sold 24,000,000 copies in UK. This is just 4-5 million less than The Beatles there.

                            • I dunno if it was mentioned earlier - queen are HUGE in Russia. But as long as almost all records are illegal and pirate copies - it's hard to say how many records were sold to date. I estimate it in about 30 millions.

                              • Queen is huge

but even with illegal sales it cann't be higher than in UK

the levels of sales (legal + illegal copies) for superstars in Russia look like:

                                Zemfira (6 albums) 5M
                                Tatu (3 albums) 3M
                                Maksim 2,5M
                                Dima Bilan (4 albums) 2M

Madonna has sold 500K legal copies since 1998 and her level of sales (legal + illegal copies 1984-2008, 15 albums) cann't be higher than 1,5M CD+MC+LP

you can estimate Queen as 1-2M illegal copies in Russia but no more than that

Thank you, good list, with some usual acts. It is a shame that Queen were big in so many countries where there were no original albums being distributed. But it is no surprise they are popular there, as I always knew that Queen sold more albums and records than any group outside North America, except for The Beatles.

                                      No Madonna on the list?.

                                            • 'Greatest Hits II' is no longer the UK's 7th
Best Selling Album. It is now in 8th place. It
has been overtaken by 'Thriller' by Michael Jackson,
which gained over 240,000 more Sales, due to the
Sales of 'Thriller 25' being added to it.

However, Queen are the only Act with 2 Albums in
the Top 5 of the 'Greatest Hits' Albums Top 20 in
the UK. They are 1st with 'Greatest Hits', (1981),
& 3rd with 'Greatest Hits II' (1991). ABBA are the
only other Act with 2 Albums in that Top 20. 'Gold',

                                              • I was reviewing some chart books the other day and I was surprised to see that Innuendo was only their 3rd UK #1 single... Only one #1 in the 70s (Bohemian rapsody) and only one #1 in the 80s (Under pressure). Surprised to see that their 2 biggest hits in the US (their only #1s there: AOBTD & CLTCL) did not make it to the top in their native country. I always assumed that Radio gaga, I want to break free, We are the champions, We will rock you and It's a kind of magic were #1 songs... anyway they passed the test of time and they are truly classics now
