  • I think Queen bridged the gap between pop and rock and so got fans from both genres.

    • Thanks HUR: excellent work.
That shows that Queen are not only a "Greatest Hits band", but they have also good figures for their studio albums. The figure we know about their first albums is probably underestimated. For example, A Night At The Opera retailed more or less 10,000 copies in 2011, and its shipments probably were 20,000 copies. So its total could be around 1,520,000 or 1,530,000 copies.
Anyway, in 2011, only with their remastered catalogue - obviously with the compilations too - Queen had a good market and they could be not far from 300,000 copies for their whole catalogue.

      • Thank you, Loris. I'm glad you liked it. And thank you for the charts updates too.

Thank you for this, another version of "Live At Wembley" that achieves a second award. So far, Queen's DVDs were certified as follows:

Greatest Video Hits - 5,000 (Platinum)

Live At Wembley - 5,000 (Gold)

Greatest Video Hits II - 2,500 (Gold)

Queen Rock Montreal - 10,000 (Platinum)

        Live At Wembley 25 - 2,500 (Gold)

I got some news from Poland. According to EMI, "Platinum Collection" sold 64,000 copies in the country up until 2010; and while under contract with Universal Music, it sold a further 4,000 copies during 2011, for a combined 68,000 copies. Unfortunately, EMI forgot to certify the album and Universal (at least for now) won't combine the sales for certifications purposes.

During 2011, their studio albums sold 1,000 to 3,000 copies each.

        Poland

I have found a Polish list with EMI's best selling albums in 1994 in that country:

1 Pink Floyd The Division Bell
        2 Roxette Crash Boom Bang
        3 Enigma Cross Of Chance
        4 Queen Greatest Hits II
5 Meat Loaf Bat Out Of Hell

And here is a Top 5 from 1992:

        1. Queen Greatest Hits and Greatest Hits II
        2. Simply Red Stars
        3. Nirvana Nevermind
        4. Eric Clapton Rush Soundtrack

For some reason, both compilations were listed together.

In Poland, Queen have sold many records over the years.

Between November 2008 and the first semester of 2009, Media Agora SA in partner with EMI Music, released Queen's entire catalogue (including all of their studio albums and live albums) in special editions with brand new booklets. Every album was released as a digipack in hard cover with photos, history of the making of each album in Polish and lyrics for every song. In total, 24 albums were released. The first album was released on Monday 24 November 2008, which marked the 17th anniversary of Freddie Mercury's passing; and one was released each week from that week onwards.

A few months after that, they had all achieved certifications in the country:

        Queen - 20,000 (Platinum)

        Queen II - 20,000 (Platinum)

Sheer Heart Attack - 20,000 (Platinum)

A Night At The Opera - 40,000 (Double Platinum)

A Dat At The Races - 20,000 (Platinum)

News Of The World - 20,000 (Platinum)

        Jazz - 20,000 (Platinum)

        Live Killers 1 - 20,000 (Platinum)

        Live Killers 2 - 20,000 (Platinum)

        The Game - 20,000 (Platinum)

        Flash Gordon - 20,000 (Platinum)

        Hot Space - 20,000 (Platinum)

        The Works - 20,000 (Platinum)

A Kind Of Magic - 60,000 (Triple Platinum)

        Live Magic - 20,000 (Platinum)

        The Miracle - 20,000 (Platinum)

        Innuendo - 20,000 (Platinum)

        Live At Wembley '86 1 - 20,000 (Platinum)

        Live At Wembley '86 2 - 20,000 (Platinum)

Made In Heaven - 20,000 (Platinum)

        Queen On Fire 1 - 20,000 (Platinum)

        Queen On Fire 2 - 20,000 (Platinum)

Return Of The Champions 1 - 20,000 (platinum)

Return Of The Champions 2 - 20,000 (Platinum Collection)

Total - 540,000 copies officially certified.

However, Agora SA announced that every album sold more than 30,000 copies. This means that apart from "A Kind Of Magic" (which sold 60,000 copies, certified triple platinum) and "A Night At The Opera" (which sold 40,000 copies, certified double platinum), all of the other 22 albums that were released sold at least 30,000 copies in Poland (despite all of them being platinum).

So overall, the 24 albums sold a combined 760,000 copies in Poland between 2008 and 2009.

Interesting to note that "A Kind Of Magic" was the first one to be released and it was cheaper than the rest of the albums; these two factors explain why it sold most amongst all the titles. Furthermore, all their double live albums were released separately: one disc one week and other disc in another week.

Apart from that, Queen achieved the following certifications:

Made In Heaven - 100,000 (Platinum)

        Platinum Collection - 68,000 (Gold)

        Absolute Greatest - 10,000 (Gold)

          • Very good and impressive analysis as usual HUR. Queen are a very good catalog band all over the world and even seem to be holding their own in the US - I can't think of many other veteran acts who are doing so well, especially in the Digital catalogue singles charts.

Last week in the UK, Queen are still selling OK amounts

            131. (153) GREATEST HITS [REMASTERED] (Queen)
            195 RE-ENTRY GREATEST HITS II - REMASTERED - Queen
(Nicola Roberts sold 2,755 copies at number 111 so Greatest Hits probably sold another 2,100 and Greatest Hits 2 maybe 1,300?)

            - nothing spectacular here but hopefully their new record company can surprise us this year - maybe we'll get the Queen+Michael Jackson tracks at last..

            • Thank you, Edwood. Yes, in the USA Queen are possibly the biggest selling 'catalogue' band when it comes to their digital tracks; they reached 10,203,000 downloads in September 2009, and are now probably on 14,000,000 overall. I think that the Rolling Stones may be up there.

Queen have sold more tracks in the USA than in any other country, but even if we adjust their sales for the size of the market and make some relative comparisons to other countries, I still think that North America is probably their lead market on the digital front.

              South Korean shipments in 2011

              November 2011

              15 Platinum Collection (1,263)

              December 2011

              64 Greatest Hits (269)

              Total known sales per album:

              Greatest Hits – 7,119 copies
              Greatest Hits II – 3,479
              Platinum Collection – 1,263
              Live At Wembley '86 – 479
              Absolute Greatest – 1,477
              Queen Jewels – 1,250
              Sheer Heart Attack – 294
              A Night At The Opera – 726
              A Day At The Races – 295
News Of The World – 189
              Jazz – 172
              The Game – 196
              Flash Gordon – 161
              Hot Sapce – 171
              The Works – 207
              A Kind Of Magic – 199
              The Miracle – 197
              Innuendo – 211
              Made In Heaven – 234
              Queen Rock Montreal – 277
              Deep Cuts – 274

              Total – 18,870 copies

Obviously, these sales aren't complete, except for those of "Greatest Hits" (remastered). For example, "Greatest Hits II" had sold 3,479 copies by August, so the last quarter (the biggest in terms of shipments) is missing; and so on.

EMI were still shipping some copies during the first few months, so some albums may have achieved some (small) sales then.

Overall, these are good totals considering the physical market in South Korea.

I'll get up-dated Download Sales for all of Queen's
UK Singles, in early 2012. With a closing Date of
the final Sales Chart of 2011.

NOTE - I asked for them earlier this Year,
but I only asked for Sales of about 66% of their UK
Hits. It is my fault that the Sales Data was
misleading. I foolishly called the resulting List,
Queen's Best Selling UK Downloads. I should have
said that they were only the 66% of the Hits that
I'd asked about! So, it is not The OCC's fault that
the List was misleading. It is mine. I'm very sorry
about that. I did it without thinking, & not on
                purpose, to mislead people.

But, in early 2012, I'll ask them for the Download
Sales of ALL of Queen's UK Singles.

The OCC have told me, (3 people there), that I can
ask them this in January. They said they'd get back
to me ASAP with the Sales Totals.

I'll also ask them for up-to-date Sales of Queen's
Albums - the 'Re-Masters'. Plus where the 3 'Hits'
Albums, & 'Made In Heaven', 'The Platinum Collection'
& 'Absolute Greatest' are up to, (Totals), in UK Sales.

Plus Queen's Total 'Download' Sales since The OCC
began monitoring them. (Which I think was in September 2004).

[b] If anyone wishes to add to what I ask The OCC,
(about Queen), then please let me know.

                    • Last year, I said:

                      1984

No year end chart for this year. Queen's "The Works" was #1 on the Album chart and achieved a gold certification. In addition, the single "Radio GaGa" was certified silver (30,000 copies sold) and "I Want To Break Free" was certified gold (50,000 copies). Queen got a mention in Billboard, in 1985, for having been one of the best selling acts of the previous year in Portugal.

"The Works" was among the very best selling albums of the year, but I don't have the whole ranking.
Finally, I found this information. In Portugal, Queen did very well during 1984, with their albums and singles.

                      Portugal

                      Best Selling Albums of 1984

                      1 - Thriller - Michael Jackson
                      2 - The Works - Queen
3 - Pipes Of Peace - Paul McCartney
                      4 - Private Dancer - Tina Turner

                      Best Selling Singles of 1984

1 - I Just Call To Say I Love You - Stevie Wonder
                      2 - Hello - Lionel Richie
                      3 - Radio Ga Ga - Queen
                      4 - Self Control - Laura Branigan
5 - Against All Odds - Phil Collins
                      6 - I Want To Break Free - Queen
                      7 - Careless Whisper - George Michael
8 - Pipes Of Peace - Paul McCartney
                      9 - I Like Chopin - Gazebo
                      10 - Thriller - Michael Jackson

                      Chart information

                      The Works: #1 (2 weeks)

                      Radio GaGa: #1 (7 weeks)
I Want To Break Free: #1 (5 weeks)

Plus, I have now been able to confirm some further chart positions:

                      Albums

News Of The World: #1 (2 weeks)
                      Jazz: #1 (1 week)
Live At Wembley: #1 (3 weeks)
                      Five Live: #1 (2 weeks)

Incredibly, "Five Live" went to number one in July 1993.

Additionally, "Greatest Hits" reached #3 in 1992. I know that "Greatest Hits II" spent at least 6 weeks at the pole position in early 1992 (it may have been a chart topping album in late 1991 too).

                      Singles

                      We Are The Champions: #3
                      Bicycle Race: #3
                      Innuendo: #1

                      Best Selling Albums of 1992

                      1 - Palavras Ao Vento - Resistência
2 - Rock In Rio Douro - GNR
                      3 - Nevermind - Nirvana
4 - Use Your Illusion II - Guns N' Roses

8 - ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits - ABBA
                      9 - Stars - Simply Red
                      10 - Earthrise - Vários (Polygram)

                      Best Selling Albums of 1993

1 - The Bodyguard - Whitney Houston / Banda Sonora
                      2 - Tutte Storie - Eros Ramazzotti
3 - Bigger, Better, Faster, More! - 4 Non Blondes
4 - On The Night - Dire Straits
                      5 - Timeless - Michael Bolton
                      6 - Ten Summoner's Tales - Sting
                      7 - Love Classics - Vários
                      8 - 16 Top World Charts 93 - Vários (Vidisco)
                      9 - Super Mix 8 - Vários
                      10 - Five Live - George Michael + Queen e Lisa Stansfield

I'm trying to figure what position did "Live Killers" achieve in 1979.

Queen are a British rock band formed in London in 1971, originally consisting of Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), John Deacon (bass guitar, guitars, vocals), and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals). Queen's earliest works were influenced by progressive rock, but the band gradually ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly works, incorporating more diverse and innovative styles in their music.

The band has released a total of 18 number one albums, 18 number one singles, and 10 number one DVDs worldwide, making them one of the world's best-selling music artists. Queen have sold over 150 million albums, with some estimates in excess of 300 million albums worldwide, including 32.5 million in the United States alone as of 2004. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, the band is also the only group in which every member has composed more than one chart-topping single, and all four members of Queen were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2009, "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

I presume this means it has now sold 666,667 copies in the USA not the 2,000,000 it states in the article as the USA certifies per disc in the set.

I think it is a total of 54,990 units while inside the Top 300. But perhaps about 100,000 copies altogether counting the whole year.

                                        South Korea

And these were the best selling Western album in South Korea:

#5 Jason Mraz - We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things 11,872
                                        #10 Queen - Greatest Hits I (2011 Remaster) 7,148

                                        #24 Bruno Mars - Doo-Wops & Hooligans 5,052
                                        #25 Avril Lavigne - Goodbye Lullaby 4,540
#28 Lady Gaga - Born This Way (International Special) 4,382
#30 Radiohead - The King of Limbs 4,177
                                        #33 Queen - Greatest Hits II (2011 Remastered) 3,916
#38 Maroon 5 - Hands All Over (Korea Tour Edition) 3,612
#39 Michael Jackson - King Of Pop (Korean Limited Edition) 3,523

Similar to what I posted a month ago. "Greatest Hits II" was on 3,479 units by August, and kept selling during the last quarter to reach 3,916. In total, I think Queen sold 25,000 physical albums in 2011. I think, even if I could be wrong, that they were the best selling foreign album act of the year.

What have been Queen's download singles sales for each year, 2004 to 2011, if known.

The Beatles have done 800,000 in 1 year. Have Queen achieved this, or even better?
                                                Hello Brian,

I was looking at some old posts and I found this one.

According to the Official Chart Company, Queen sold 2,090,000 digital downlods in the UK from 2004 to early 2011, including 285,000 units in 2010 alone. I'm not sure if that was the right figure (as it sounds like a lot, to be honest), but, assuming they sold a similar total during 2011, they should now be on about 2,400,000 copies by now.

                                                This week in Spain:

                                                26.02.2012

                                                73 Platinum Collection
83 A Night At The Opera
                                                96 Greatest Hits

                                                Last week:

                                                19.02.2012

There is something not very clear here...

The "Platinum Collection" was already certified Platinum in May of 2005... (release date: september 2001).

I don't understand why now it is called "PC Vol.1-3" and it was awarded again Gold and Platinum (besides 2xP), and the release date of this one is september 2002...

                                                  Is it a RIAA mistake?
The logical certification would be indeed a 2xP for "TPC" (670k for a triple album), in accordance with its soundscan figure of 680k by september 2009.

So maybe the Gold and Platinum of this month certification is indeed an error?

                                                    • As regards UK Shipments, yesterday, The BPI gave Adele's
                                                      '21' a 15th Platinum Award.

It is now the UK's 'Most Certified Album'.

However, if every huge Album got the UK Platinum Awards
that it is entitled to, (for Shipments), then 'Greatest Hits',
by Queen', should have about 19 or 20, 'Sgt Pepper....',
by The Beatles, should have about 17, & 'Gold', by ABBA,
should have 16 or 17 etc..

                                                      • This is a good week for Queen in the USA.

Greatest Hits is #108 in the Top-200 so its sales are of 5,392 copies. Beginning from the start of 2012, this album has sold 22,000 copies.

Bohemian Rhapsody this week has sold 5,512 downloaded copies and this version has sold 50,000 downloaded copies from the start of 2012. The total is more than 2,700,000 downloaded copies, maybe 2,750,000.

We Will Rock You has sold 5,090 downloaded copies and from the beginning of the year, this version has been downloaded for 48,000 times. I think the total could be close to 2,400,000.

Under Pressure, this week, has been downloaded for 4,979 times and from the beginning of the year has sold 44,500 digital downloads.

The total for these three digital singles is 142,500 copies.

                                                            In 1977:

"…La riprova potrebbero darla i Queen, un gruppo rock inglese che in Italia vendeva al massimo trentamila copie per ogni disco e che in poche poche settimane ha raggiunto quota centomila quando il pezzo 'Somebody to love' era la sigla del ciclo cinematografico dedicato a Humphrey Bogart" (L'espresso, 1979).

It reads that because of the use of "Somebody To Love" on a television show, Queen reached 100,000 copies with one of their albums. Which would have been "A Day At The Races" arguably.

It further states that before that, they were only selling 30,000 copies per album. So that is what "A Night At The Opera" may have done by early 1977. Of course, things have changed 35 years after that.

In December 1989, the following was written on a Billboard article:

"...and platinum status (200,000) was reached by Rick Astley, Joe Cocker, Terence Trent D'Arby, the Eurythmics, Paul McCartney, Pet Shop Boys, Queen, Rolling Stones, Spandau Ballet, Tears For Fears and Tanita Tikaram. Nex in the big-seller brigade: Edie Brickwell, Cure, Guns 'N Roses, Nick Kamen, Swing Out Sister and Barry White" (Billboard, 1989).

                                                            So we have:

The Miracle – more than 200,000 copies sold in Italy.

These are its weekly chart positions for anyone interested:

Even though it failed to reach number one (blame it on Zucchero and Madonna, the biggest acts then), "The Miracle" still was one of the best selling albums of 1989 in Italy.

                                                            Comment

                                                            • If it was right that every album sold 30,000 copies - like A Night At The Opera - their sales would be bigger than the figures we actually estimate. In Italy, Queen-boom started after 1991 - when also the studio albums sold very well - so A Night At The Opera and above all A Day At The Races could be now at 200,000 copies, A Day At The Races maybe more, because it was at 100,000 copies in 1977.

The schedule regarding The Miracle is very interesting. Even if this album didn't obtain the number 1, at the end of 1989 it was Platinum thanks to 200,000 copies sold. So I think that from 1989 to 2012, the album has accumulated about 100/150,000 copies, so now it could be at 300/350,000 copies.
