  • Prince Estate to Release ‘Originals’ Album: His Versions of Songs He Gave to Other Artists (EXCLUSIVE)

    By Jem Aswad

It’s a rare singer-songwriter who can just give away undeniable hits like “Nothing Compares 2 U,” “Manic Monday” and “The Glamorous Life” to other artists, but that’s exactly what Prince did throughout his 40-year career.

And on his birthday, June 7, the late artist’s estate, in partnership with Warner Bros. Records and Tidal, will release “Originals,” a 15-track album featuring 14 previously unreleased recordings by Prince of such songs. The tracks were selected collaboratively by Troy Carter, on behalf of The Prince Estate, and Jay-Z. (The full tracklist appears below.)

Starting June 7, “Originals” will stream exclusively on Tidal for 14 days. The announcement notes, “In the spirit of sharing Prince’s music with his fans as he wanted, the album will be available to stream in Master quality via Tidal’s HiFi subscription tier. Members will be able to hear the recordings just as the Artist intended the tracks to sound.”

On June 21, Warner Bros. will release the recordings, sourced directly from Prince’s archive of “Vault” recordings, via all download and streaming partners and physically on CD, while 180 gram 2LP and limited edition Deluxe CD+2LP formats will follow on July 19th. (Pre-order the album here.)

Prince was a monumentally prolific artist. By the mid-1980s, in addition to releasing nine of his most commercially successful albums, he also wrote and recorded many dozens of songs for proteges The Time, Vanity 6, Sheila E., Apollonia 6, Jill Jones, the Family, and Mazarati, and countless unreleased tracks. Often, Prince’s original demo recordings would be used as master takes on their albums, with only minor alterations to the instrumentation and a replacement of the vocal tracks. Other times, artists would rely on his demos to guide them through their own recording process, with Prince’s initial take informing their final version of his song.

“Originals” reveals the origins of these songs — many of which were substantial hits — along with deeper album cuts such as Vanity 6’s “Make-Up,” Jill Jones’s “Baby, You’re a Trip,” and Kenny Rogers’ “You’re My Love.” While several of the versions on “Originals” have been available on bootlegs, many have not. The only previously released track is Prince’s original 1984 version of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which was issued in 2018 as a standalone single (although the 1992 live duet version with Rosie Gaines may be his definitive take). The song was originally released in 1985 by The Family, and made into an unforgettable No. 1 single by Sinead O’Connor five years later. The album also includes Prince’s versions of four songs he produced for Sheila E. and two by The Time.

                    • Coming soon from Prince's vault: New 'Originals' album, documentaries and more
estate is announcing the collection of his performances of songs he wrote for others.
By Jon Bream and Chris Riemenschneider Star Tribune staff writers APRIL 25, 2019 — 8:29AM

Three years and countless legal negotiations after his death, the Prince estate is coming alive with projects that will probably (mostly) excite fans.

Here’s a rundown of what’s new, and what’s expected soon, from his famously overstuffed vault.

A new album: “Originals” — a collection of his original versions of songs that he wrote for other artists — is being announced Thursday at the third annual Celebration at Paisley Park. The single-disc record will include Prince’s takes on the Bangles’ “Manic Monday,” the Time’s “Jungle Love,” Sheila E’s “The Glamorous Life,” Kenny Rogers’ “You’re My Love,” Vanity 6’s “Sex Shooter,” Martika’s “Love … Thy Will Be Done” and the Family’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” Due: June 7, Prince’s birthday, exclusively on Tidal. Available elsewhere on June 21.

His memoir: “The Beautiful Ones” will finally be published in the fall. Prince himself announced the project at a New York City news conference that included a half-hour performance in March 2016, weeks before his death. He collaborated with writer Dan Piepenbring of the Paris Review on some of the text. Random House raided Prince’s vault for personal photos as well as handwritten lyrics and the treatment he wrote for the movie “Purple Rain.” Due: Oct. 29.

“1999” reissue. Like the special edition of “Purple Rain” released last year, this 1982 double disc, featuring “Little Red Corvette” and “Delirious,” will receive a deluxe treatment with outtakes and alternate tracks. Due: During the holiday season.

“Ultimate Rave”: This triple-disc set packages two albums — 1999’s “Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic” (featuring guests Chuck D, Eve, Gwen Stefani, Ani DiFranco and Sheryl Crow) and its 2001 remix “Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic” — plus a DVD of Prince’s 1999 pay-per-view New Year’s bash, “Rave Un2 the Year 2000,” with Morris Day & the Time, Maceo Parker, Larry Graham, George Clinton and Lenny Kravitz. Due: Friday.

                      "ULTIMATE RAVE" COVER
                      A 3-disc set.
Netflix documentary: “Selma” and “A Wrinkle in Time” filmmaker Ava DuVernay — whose documentary work includes “13th” and the hip-hop flick “This Is the Life” — was tapped by the Prince estate to direct an in-depth look at the Purple One as an artist. Rumor is Prince himself approached her about working together. Due: Unknown.

Apple Music documentary: A British film crew has been working on a documentary about Prince’s legendary First Avenue concert on Aug. 3, 1983, the night he not only debuted the songs for “Purple Rain” but recorded them for the film’s soundtrack. (Three tracks captured live are heard on the final album.) It was also the night 19-year-old Wendy Melvoin made her debut as the Revolution’s guitarist. Due: unknown.

“Musicology,” “3121” and “Planet Earth” reissues: These albums from the ’00s became available on vinyl for the first time in February.

Prince Estate announces deluxe reissue of 1999

Featuring 35 previously unreleased tracks, live performances, and liner notes

                                                          BY MICHAEL ROFFMANON SEPTEMBER 10, 2019, 6:18PM

Prepare to get delirious and party before the millennium again: The Prince Estate and Warner Bros. Records have announced an extensive reissue of The Purple One’s legendary 1982 fifth studio album, 1999. Due for release on November 29th, the album will be remastered for the very first time and include 35 previously unreleased tracks culled from the legendary vault.

These tracks offer a true window into the late legend’s genius leading up to the blockbuster crossover double album. At the time, he had been working on material that would be passed on to his various protégés (see: Vanity 6 and The Time), in addition to stockpiling a number of tunes he planned to use in the future. These tell the full story and should add some context to 1999.
Naturally, as these commemorative releases tend to be rolled out, there are three different versions. There’s the remastered album, which will be available on 2LP 180g Purple vinyl, CD, and all streaming platforms, but then there’s the two Deluxe editions. The standard Deluxe includes the additional tracks over 2 CDs or four LPS, but the Super Deluxe Edition? Hold my beer.

The Super Deluxe Edition delivers all the audio Prince officially released in and around 1982, 23 previously unissued studio tracks recorded between November 1981 and January 1983, and a complete live performance of the 1999 tour recorded in Detroit, MI on November 30th, 1982. What’s more, both sets include a DVD of his Houston, TX show on December 29th, 1982.

That’s not all, though. The set will also include Prince’s previously unseen handwritten lyrics for several songs from the era, including “Little Red Corvette”, alongside rare photography from Prince’s early ‘80s photographer, Allen Beaulieu. Rolling Stone critic David Fricke, Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, radio host Andrea Swensson, and Prince scholar Duane Tudahl penned new liner notes.

Consult the cover artwork and full tracklist below.

In related news, October 29th will bring the release of Prince’s memoir, The Beautiful Ones.
