Need to consider Purple for my all-time albums list. Must be 3-5m albums sold in total in UK. I've got them on ~2.030m albums sold in UK in '70's - 26th best selling albums act.

..seems to be a band that is very under-certified in all markets...as most certifications , generally all seem to come around the time of release....Take care

,,some might find this of interest from Germany..

The figures quoted give the sales at the time of certification. Almost all of the 70's albums would have sold more than 500k by now.

No, sales in this site are supposed to be updated, but they are calculated and not estimated, which can give horrible results like their, Made In Japan for example Gold 3 decades ago sold more than 2.3k this year alone, the figures of 102.3k is consequently undoubtedly fake.

Has anyone actually got any sales rather than outdated certifications?

It would be great to find out (or try to find out) what this band has actually sold worldwide.

Another one of those Pre 1973 albums that has been certified by the BPI. Saying that on the BPI site it gives this album a release date of Sat 1st May 1982!!
These are likely sales for a re-issue only from May 1982 onwards. No way are all the 1970's sales in there as it would be more than silver!

could do with a little updating? At least Platinum by now, particularly with those sales from 1992 onwards.

Also excellent sales figures again jimmy. Thanks. These titles must be their biggest selling studio albums in the UK.

Mustn't be forgotten these were a big selling band in the 70's.

..I would think it would be a fair assumption to make...looking at Deep Purple in Rock chart run from 1970-71 in the UK...the album would have sales in the range of 1 million units at that time..Take care

No, there is no way possible that it sold a million copies. Very few records reached sales of that figure back in 70/71. Led Zeppelin II which had a far superior chart run, did not even get near 1m, by the end of the 70's.

                              From everyhit.com;

1 Simon and Garfunkel Bridge Over Troubled Water
2 Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin II
                              3 Original Soundtrack Easy Rider
4 Original Soundtrack Paint Your Wagon
5 Various Artists Motown Chartbusters Volume 3
6 The Beatles Let It Be
                              7 The Beatles Abbey Road
8 Deep Purple Deep Purple In Rock
                              9 Paul McCartney McCartney
10 Andy Williams Andy Williams Greatest Hits

As you can see Led Zeppelin II finished 69 and 70 as the 2nd best selling album. So if it did not manage to sell 1m copies at this time there is no way In Rock could. Also Abbey Road, likewise, did not achieve 1m sales back then.

Probably quite a lot. I read a billboard article long time ago dealing with the CD reissue of Deep Purple albums in the mid 80's. and it was big numbers (don't remember exactly)

Their numbers are much better than what is indicated by sales during chart activity(Mario's list)Japan seems to always have that solid heavier rock fan base throughout the years

Germany and Japan are probably one of their top markets.

Don't know global sales of the band. and even if they do not sold as much as "officialy" announced by the band (120M) they probably sold at least 40-50M

Yes it is a massive seller in Germany. It is not certified, but here an interesting comparison :

                                            Made In Japan : #1 x4 / Top 10 x30 = 500.000 copies sold by 1990.
                                            In Rock : #1 x12 / Top 10 x56 = ??

According to a point system, it is the 3rd mosst successful album ever.

I always knew Deep Purple were massive in Europe, probably bigger than Sabbath & Zeppelin, while the opposite seems to be the case in the US.

But I've never seen these figures before. Over a year in the top 10!!! Impressive!
No wonder Richie Blackmore influenced so many guitarists like Yngvie Malmsteen and Axel Rudi Pell.

No, it sold less than 700k by September 87 and was only #97 of the 70's. Sales were damn low until 72. This album sold at most 400-500k during the 70's, nothing more.
...my error I had meant to say Germany as In Rock was in the charts there for 19 months....but it would be fair to say the Silver Certification in the UK is not an accurate reflection of total sales for this album...Take care
Yes it is a massive seller in Germany. It is not certified, but here an interesting comparison :

                                                Made In Japan : #1 x4 / Top 10 x30 = 500.000 copies sold by 1990.
                                                In Rock : #1 x12 / Top 10 x56 = ??

According to a point system, it is the 3rd mosst successful album ever.
..as part of a compilation package I have with DP there are a number of BBC radio interviews with the band from 1970 and part of the interview is a discussion about DP having their first million seller with in Rock in Germany and the massive appeal the album was having throughout Europe and Australia etc...and part of that success may have been related to Blackmore`s years in Germany around 1965 after being a very successful session player in the UK from 1962-65 and being a member of groups like Lord Sutch ,The Outlaws , Heinz and the Wild Boys etc...most don`t realize Blackmore as a teenager along with Jimmy Page and Jim Sullivan were the main go to session players for legendary producer Joe Meek....Blackmore also was back up guitarist in those years for artists like Jerry Lee Lewis,Gene Vincent etc when they were during the UK and Europe...as a bit more trivia Blackmore ,Page and Jeff Beck all played at one time or another in the group Lord Sutch...John Peel has often described Blackmore`s guitar work from 1963-64 as the birthcry of heavy metal...and if anyione has heard his material from that period will be amazed at what it sounds like..as it is completely unique for that period of time...if anyone is interested I have in the range of 1200 Blackmore tunes from 1962 to the present..covering pretty well any style of playing from classical to flamenco to blues to heavy metal etc...Take care

Any idea how "Machine Head" charted in Germany compared to those two?
