  • Cher :: Charts & Sales History

One of the biggest pop stars of our time is getting back to Las Vegas with her first residency since her run at Caesars Palace in the late 70s/early 80s!

Cher agrees to 3-year deal in Vegas

LAS VEGAS (Associated Press)- She has released 25 albums that have sold more than 100 million copies and has enjoyed a career that has included concerts, recordings, Broadway, TV, film acting and directing, and books. Now she's taking her show to Vegas.

Cher announced Thursday she'll be one of the headline acts at Caesars Palace.

"I started in Vegas at Caesars, so I've come full circle," she said. "I'm back, and I plan to give my fans the best experience yet. I think everybody knows I only do things in a big way."

The Oscar, Emmy and Grammy award winner said in a statement that she will begin a three-year, 200-show engagement May 6.

"Cher's name in one word encapsulates icon, award-winning legend, and captivating performer," said Caesars Palace President Gary Selesner. "Caesars is pleased to welcome Cher back."

"Cher at The Colosseum" is scheduled to include hit songs from her career of more than 40 years, with choreography, costumes and special effects. It is a partnership with AEG Live.

Cher will alternate performances at the 4,300-seat Colosseum with other headline acts Elton John and Bette Midler.

In December, Celine Dion ended a five-year run at the theater, which opened in 2002 as home of her show, "A New Day ...".

John, who began playing at the Colosseum in 2004 when Dion's show was dark, is now booked to play his show, "The Red Piano," through 2008. Midler's "The Showgirl Must Go On" is set to open Feb. 20 for a two-year run of 100 shows per year.

Cher's 90-minute show will feature choreography from Doriana Sanchez and lighting, special effects and costumes by Bob Mackie. Engagements will run four nights a week on Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Ticket prices are from $95 to $250.

Cher has so many uncertified albums that probably sold between 200,000-450,000 copies that I bet if all that was factored in, she's probably around 20-25 million in America

I love Cher!! She is amazing, regardless of sales. But many would question why her record sales (in the USA mostly) are so low. She has had fantastic longevity and I put her sales down to the fact that she likes touring so much

I think a main problem is that Cher was never really taken seriously until around the time of Believe. That was when people started to realize how long she's been around and what a survivor she was and how many classics she's had.

She was taken seriously a bit in the late 80's/early 90's too but then the infomercials set her career back 20 years, but since Believe, I think she's gotten her respect as a veteran.

Cher has not sold 100m albums, half of that will be more realistic.

AP always report figures without checking them, they even reported that Jackson sold over 100 million records in Japan alone.

Believe the album peaked at number 2 in Spain and spent 49 weeks in the charts.

The single helped the cause reaching the number 1 spot for 7 weks in 1998.Dove L Amore was 4 in Spain and Strong Enough 6.

I might think Beleive is her biggest single and album worldwide.

I agree - the single and album surely must be her biggest sellers to date.

                                        Canada: 750,000
                                        South America: 500,000+

                                        Australasia: 220,000+

                                        Europe: 4,750,000

                                        = 11,500,000+

                                        Heart Of Stone:

                                        USA: 3,500,000

                                        Europe: 2,000,000

                                        = 7,000,000

                                        Greatest Hits:

                                        USA: 1,300,000
                                        Canada: 200,000
                                        South America: 100,000+

                                        Australasia: 200,000+

                                        Europe: 2,800,000

                                        = 5,000,000

She was very much an average album seller around the world, considering the length of her career. But you have to take into account that the biggest-selling 60's albums were selling the same as what an album sells nowadays (2-5m per year). Her sales picked up a lot in the 80's, and stayed steady through the 90's, until she reached 1998, when she reached her commercial peak with the globally successful, hit-making machine known as Believe. The album topped loads of charts around the world, gave Cher her biggest hit ever (the 6m+ selling Believe) and reminded people of what made her a legend. I think its also worth noting that Cher has grossed over $570m in her career through tour ticket sales alone. By far and away, she is probably the richest female singer of her generation
