  • Cher's 20 Biggest Billboard Hits

In honor of the legendary diva's birthday, we've ranked the biggest songs of her inimitable six-decade-long career

To celebrate superstar dance/pop diva Cher's 70th birthday today (May 20), Billboard has unveiled the legendary performer's top 20 Billboard Hot 100 hits.

As we ... turn back time ... in our chart archives, we find that the Academy-, Emmy- and Grammy Award-winner's 1973 No. 1 hit "Half Breed" leads this exclusive list. (See a timeline of Cher's extensive career here.)

Cher's 33 Most Outrageous Outfits | Cher Interview: Diva Reflects on 50 Years on the Charts

The track is one of five No. 1s on this tally; four are by Cher as a solo artist and one from her time as half of Sonny & Cher. The husband-and-wife duo place five songs on this recap, including all five of its top 10 Hot 100 hits.

At No. 20 on the tally is Cher's debut chart hit as a soloist, the Bob Dylan-penned "All I Really Want to Do," which arrived on the Hot 100 dated July 3, 1965 (the same week that the Byrds' version of the song bowed; her recording went on to peak at No. 15, while their take hit No. 40.) A week later, Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" debuted.

    • It seems like Billboard goes back-and-forth on whether or not they include Sonny and Cher records in Cher's chart history. They were a separate recording act, not simply two solo artists who kept duetting. Quite frankly if they do there's no reason for them to not include Jackson 5 records with Michael Jackson's chart history, and Diana Ross and the Supremes in with Diana's.

They were a duo not a group, with Cher's voice present about 80% in most of their songs.
Anyway, they did count both the duo's and her solo hits before, as seen in this scan from Billboard's 40th anniversary issue:

But the last time they reported females with most hot 100 entries they didn't include Cher, so I guess they changed the rules.

Hey Stephen do you have any estimates for the mentioned singles? Could their download sales be around 50k?

We know that 'Believe' sold 25k downloads in 2013 alone, so I say its total download sales are around 200k+. As for 'TBT', maybe around 100k?

Also, 'The Shoop Shoop Song' is definitely eligible for Platinum, seeing its at #4 and we know it sold 550k during the 90s.

Right, and a duo is an act and completely separate from the two solo artists involved.

Right, and a duo is an act and completely separate from the two solo artists involved.
Yeah but still, duo is formed of two people, their songs are duets, so credit should go to both, while groups have 4 or 5 members thus it's trickier to give credit to all of them, especially when their names are not mentioned in the group name. That being said, UK counts all the Diana Ross and the Supreme records to Diana's tally, just like they count S&C to Cher's...

Sorry about the late reply but IHYFI should be on 40,000 downloads so The Shoop Shoop Song must be very close to Platinum (600,000) and IICTBT has to be over 300,000. It's a shame they never said the sales of the top 5, that would have been great.

                      • My estimate would be around 45k+ , seeing it's #6 on the list and above Strong Enough, which is one of her main 3 songs which would always shoot up the iTunes along with Believe and TBT, so it's really surprising SE is not higher than #9.

Anyway, here are the updated *estimates for her single sales in the UK, with the inclusion of YHSTLOM, WTB and After All.

I wanted to start counting album sales.
Cause there are the albums, which are just non-certified but can reach high positions, and there are albums, which were not high on charts, but were charted, so, they were, at least, somehow sold.
For example, the album All I Really Wanna Do peaked at number 7, and have spent 9 weeks at chart. So it, propably have sold some number of copies.

                                  ? Girls' Generation ?
                                  ? HyoYeon ? Britney Spears ?

Girls' Generation is the best-selling girl group of all time.

Wonder if it will ever get a cert in the UK, sales could be between 320-350k, or even higher...
Yes, I really can't understand how and why..

and why labels don't care?. Its sad.
btw, TBT really should de certified in UK.
Certifications are automated in the U.K. which means it's either a glitch or the song has sold less than 200k

Certifications are automatic NOW. It doesn't mean that when that new system was set a couple years ago all old songs and albums were automatically certified. There are a lot of examples of albums and songs still undercertified in UK.

IICTBT sold 240,600 throughout the 80's so my guess would be about 300,000 now. It was on iTunes as they sang it on Strictly Come Dancing when Daisy Lowe left.

yeah, wish they'd made it possible for records released earlier, I don't expect them to updated albums/singles from he 60s or 70s, but they could at least go back to the late 80s.

And yeah, Turn Back Time should be silver and could even be eligible for gold, with the streaming and downloads.
