Some of them seem wrong, for example I Got you Babe was supposed to be at 780,000, not 100,000 less? And some of the others, TMNGWY and Walking In Memphis seem too high as well.

There is a very accurate wiki page which lists the best selling artists according to their claimed sales and their available certified sales.

Cher is of course in the 100 million category with her available and listed certifications - almost 40 million (though not all the countries are included as they can be referenced at the moment) backing up very strongly her claimed records sales. Therefore, according to the list, she is the 2nd best selling female artist who started out in the 1960s.

Many veteran artists are not included on the list (Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, Bette Midler, Tom Jones, Dionne Warwick, etc) as they don't have enough certifications for their claims of 100 million records sold, which means (though not necessarily) that their claimed sales are inflated and can't be verified...

    Here's the link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_b ... ic_artists

The Official Top 40 Biggest Selling Singles Of All Time By Female Artists revealed!

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we reveal the UK’s Official Top 40 biggest singles by female artists of all time. Which lady do you reckon will claim the crown?

Today (Saturday March 8) marks International Women’s Day – the annual celebration of the economic, political, and social achievements of women right across the globe; it’s an all-round outpouring of love and appreciation for all the ladies in our lives and beyond.

If there’s one thing the Official Singles Chart would be pretty dull without, it’s female singers, and to honour the musical achievements of women, we are counting down the UK’s Official Top 40 biggest selling singles of all time by female artists!

Far out in front of everybody – and no doubt guiding the way for her fellow female artists with some kind of huge, illuminated headgear – it’s Cher. Her Number 1 smash Believe has sold almost 1.79 million copies in the UK, and spent a staggering seven weeks at the top of the Official Singles Chart in 1998 and was, unsurprisingly the biggest selling single of that year. How fitting that the biggest seller should come from a living legend who next year will celebrate 50 years since her first UK Number 1.
    http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-new ... ists-2803/

almost 1.79 mill - so it takes a bit more than 10k for it to hit 3 x Platinum!

^Thanks! Well, there are tons of records of Cher/Sonny and Cher which are not certified but sold a lot, so the estimations by some fans are realistically around 100 million records sold. For example, Billboard stated in the 60s that Look at Us sold 3 million copies in the US alone (8 weeks at #2 on BB 200), but as we can see it is certified Gold. Also, only a few countries had certifications back then so for a lot of albums/singles from the 60s early 70s we can't really say how many copies were shipped/sold. The fascinating thing about Cher is how she managed to always comeback and garner new fans, be on the charts and sell millions in each of the past several decades. That alone is a huge achievement, especially for an artist who has never really been accepted by the music critics or the music industry for that matter...

^ That's some fantastic work there, well done!

I am of the opinion that she's sold/shipped around the 50m mark in terms of albums, and around two thirds of that in singles.

Something i've just noticed when looking at sales from 2003 and 2004. I thought Cher's The Very Best Of album had only sold about 150,000 in total in the UK, but i've just seen these figures:

    2003
    127. Cher - The Very Best Of 145,000

    2004
184 The Very Best of - Cher 101,000

So that would put the sales at 246,000 from these 2 years, does anyone know if these are accurate, since the album was only in the charts for 4 weeks in 2003? And surely the total sales would be close to Platinum now?

Oh thanks! i got the release date mixed up.

Still... let's recall that Soundscan covered less than 40% at the time it began tracking sales and the album got certified just 2 months after its release, so many of its actual sales are certainly not reflected on that SS total.

I actually think there's a really good reason why it sold as well as it did in the UK besides the fact it's a catchy dance record of someone that was (and is) still admired especially in the UK: it was recorded there and along with Madonna brought dance music back to the top in the last years of the 20th century. Plus I'm sure her label promoted it to the hilt so this contributed to her selling that much.

    about the USA:
The very best of Cher should be closer to 3xP it was 2.8M a while back but i'm not sure it has sold 200k in the meantime..what about club sales, if any?
If I could turn back time Cher's greatest hits should be 1xP already
also all of her 70s gold singles should be recertified Plat, as they all sold 1M when certified gold back then
There's an off chance that Heart of stone gets a 4xP but it's not sure
Love Hurts was last certified Gold in mid-91' and it has sold about 600k since SS began so it might be up for 1xP as well
I'm sure some of her earlier stuff must be under certified...most artists are

I don't know if anyone knows this yet, but Cher has a new album coming out. There's no release date yet but apparently this is her first single called Womans World. It was debuted last night at a club for the first time, here's 54 seconds of the song:
