George Jones: new country music needs a new name

Jones made the comment during a recent interview when asked about music by artists like Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift.

"They had to use something that was established already, and that's traditional country music. So what they need to do really, I think, is find their own title, because they're definitely not traditional country music," he said.

"It's good to know that we still do traditional country music. Alan Jackson still does it, so does George Strait."

Let's be nice and call George Jones "conservative".

You won't find anyone who has toured with Taylor speaking out against her - they appreciate her for the country treasure that she is.

The CMT poll of country fans tells us that CMT and country fans would give Taylor CMA Entertainer of the Year, so maybe George Jones wants those people to go away too

"Who does Jones put his stamp of approval on? Alan Jackson and George Strait. Aw, maaaan--a tad chauvinist of him, no?"

I'm not sure why some posters in the other forums are treating these new Fearless track numbers as normal for any album's song tracks?

I haven't paid much attention to hot 100 digital track sales numbers compared to hot 100 sales, but isn't putting five song tracks in the top 20 in the first week of release considered good

slightly lower than HDD, but still quite a nice gain! keep on smashing it, Taylor!! over 4.1 million sold...and the holiday season is rapidly approaching
Another week in the BB200 top 10 and another week at # 1 Country album for Fearless

I wonder when all the naysayers will realize Taylor won't disappear when she turns 20 - she will simply start writing songs that are suitable for her new age group
Totally agree. This girl is so anti-industry when it comes to how we've seen singers developed and marketed. She has taken over the industry and has had international success with country albums even though:
        1. She writes her own music and plays instruments
        2. Doesn't dance or rely on big props and etc. to sell
        3. Doesn't rely on drama to sell
        4. Isn't shoving herself onto the stage only to be met with mediocre sales
        5. Is her OWN business manager and decides everything that she does and doesn't do

Most artists, even most of ukmixers favorites, don't do most of this. They rely on everything else and the musical gift becomes secondary.

But this girl is her own. And her music fits her age and where she is. As she gets older and has more experiences, she'll write on those. She won't be 20 talking about 16 yr old stuff, nor will she be 30 talking about being "15" and etc. She is her own artists with big production and a team of songwriters and is smashing the album charts. Her sales in this dismal period either rival, exceed or are soon to exceed those of some of ukmixers favorite artists in some of the best days of album sales!!!

        Get it Taylor!!!

            Good comments!

Most people don't realize that Taylor has been shaping her own career since an early age, and has officially acted as her own business manager since she turned 18. Her business partners bring proposals to her, and Taylor is the final decision maker on behalf of her client "Taylor Swift corporations". In fact, she enjoys breaking down and negotiating the details of each clause in the contracts.

Taylor's main business partner BRM President Scott Borchetta has provided guidance and marketing experience, but otherwise Taylor has been given tremendous freedom by the label. It is key to their relationship and success that Borchetta treats her as a partner rather than an artist under contract to the label. Too bad that more labels don't treat artists as valued partners - instead of short term "profit centers".

That is a good way of adding up the album and download track sales for comparison with other artists.

3.87 million song track sales in one week is well up in the top 10 for any artist in 2009

hmmm...what a coincidence in reaching the same total....still, adding album track sales to single downloads would help give a comparison of artists such as Taylor [good album sales] with artists who have tremendous single track sales and lower album sales.

"Taylor Swift's Fearless jumps from #7 to #3, in the wake of the release of an expanded edition with six new tracks. (Sales of regular and deluxe editions are combined.) This is the album's 42nd week in the top 10, the longest run by any album since Santana's Supernatural had 44 weeks in the top 10 in 1999-2000. Fearless sold 109,000 copies this week, which pushes it within 4,000 copies of Michael Jackson's Number Ones as the best-selling album of 2009. Fearless has sold 2,029,000 copies so far this year. Number Ones has sold 2,033,000. Which album will come out on top for the year in this super-tight race? Stay tuned.

Fearless tops the Country Albums chart for the 26th week. That's the longest run at #1 since Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts had 27 weeks on top from 2005 to 2007. Also, Swift's "Love Story" tops the 4 million mark in paid downloads this week. It's only the ninth song in digital history to reach that level, and the first country crossover smash to do so.

                          Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 albums.

                          3. Taylor Swift, Fearless, 109,000. The former #1 album jumps from #7 to #3 in its 51st week. This is its 42nd week in the top 10. Ten songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Jump Then Fall," which debuts at #2.

Taylor Swift Swoops in with Record Breaking Debut Sum

Taylor Swift, with each of the new tracks on her "Fearless (Platinum Edition)" album, becomes the first artist in the history of the Hot 100 to debut five songs within the top 30 in a single week. "Jump Then Fall" fares the best, opening at No. 10, followed by "Untouchable" (No. 19), "The Other Side of the Door" (No. 22), "Superstar" (No. 27) and "Come In With the Rain" (No. 30).

Those tracks join three other Swift singles on the list. "Forever & Always," which appears in a redone version on the "Platinum Edition" album, re-enters at No. 34, joining chart holdovers "You Belong With Me" (No. 14) and "Fifteen" (No. 49).

Taylor's Hot 100 record is just amazing - all five of the new tracks from Fearless Platinum in the top 30 with zero airplay to help them compete against the rest of the Hot 100

And the new female record for eight charted titles in a single week - I wonder how many male artists have charted 8 or more titles?

                                    • Here is a prediction report that I agree with - Taylor takes all four CMA Awards Nov 11th!

                                      http://www.cleveland.com/music/index.ss ... ma_aw.html

This installment of the CMA Awards is Taylored for Swift ... or so we think

By Chuck Yarborough, The Plain Dealer
                                      November 05, 2009, 11:20AM

Swift, who is up for four awards from the Country Music Association, is on a roll and not stopping.

She's apparently as business savvy as she is gifted. And she'll be rewarded for that on Wednesday, too, when she becomes the youngest CMA entertainer of the year. Bet on it.

Entertainer of the year: Swift, of course. So what if all her songs sound like the signature page in a high school yearbook? She's 19! She's writing what she knows, and the kid can flat-out entertain. No quibble with this.

Female vocalist of the year: Underwood and McBride have better voices. Lambert and McEntire have better delivery. But Swift will have the obelisk. Ten million-plus fans have spoken to announce to a cha-changing of the guard.

Music video of the year: "Love Story," Taylor Swift; Taylor Swift's video is about as saccharin as the Ryan O'Neal/Ali McGraw movie of the same name. But going with the front-runner (again) is another way of never having to say you're sorry.

Album of the year: You're kidding, right? Time for another "Fearless" prediction.

Country sensation Taylor Swift has scored another week to remember on the U.S. pop charts after becoming the first artist in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 to land five new entries in the top 30.

All five of the new tracks on the Love Story singer's Fearless (Platinum Edition) album have crashed into the top 30, with one, Jump Then Fall, becoming the week's highest debut at 10.

Untouchable follows at 19, The Other Side of the Door debuts at 22, Superstar is new at 27 and Come In With the Rain enters the new countdown at 30.

Other Swift tracks Forever & Always, You Belong With Me and Fifteen also make the Hot 100, giving her another record - the most charted titles in a single week by a female artist.

Following a landmark week on the Billboard 200, Swift makes more history on the Billboard Hot 100, as she becomes the first artist in the 51-year history of the chart to debut five songs simultaneously in the top 30.

Since arriving in 2006, Swift has amassed 11 top 30 debuts. With 13, only the Beatles have totaled more top 30 starts in the Hot 100's archives.

After her sophomore album "Fearless" was re-issued in its "Platinum Edition" form, all six of the set's new songs appear in the Hot 100's top 40.

Five debut - "Jump Then Fall" (No. 10), "Untouchable" (No. 19), "The Other Side of the Door" (No. 22), "Superstar" (No. 27) and "Come In With the Rain" (No. 30) - while "Forever & Always," re-recorded as a piano ballad, re-enters at No. 34. The lattermost track first spent a week at No. 49 in December 2008.

The six songs join chart holdovers "You Belong With Me" (No. 14) and "Fifteen" (No. 49). As Swift also re-enters at No. 80 as a featured artist on Boys Like Girls' "Two Is Better Than One," her nine chart listings grant her the most charted titles in a week by a solo female. Among all artists, the Beatles lead with 14 concurrent entries, achieved on the Hot 100 dated April 11, 1964.

Didn't know she set such a large amount of records, but those records are amazing, to have 150 wks on chart is hard to achieve, nor 44 wks in Top 10. THis is the second country album to do so.

No, it's not thanks to Kanye. Before him, she already had huge radio hits (Love Story?). In fact, she doesn't own much to him at all. It gave her exposure, sure, but she already had the best-selling album of the year, had already sold 10 million copies of her releases, had a tour sold-out in MINUTES and was already one of the biggest artists in the US before Kanye West interrupted her on the VMAs.

That said, good for her she writes her own lyrics but I don't buy this "Taylor Swift is such an untypical pop sensation cause she's such a good role model and SO REAL" bullsh*t. This has been done hundreds of times before.
