  • Saxon :: Charts & Sales History

    hello all

does anyone can help in collecting Saxon chart-runs and sales? Ok they're not so famous as Iron Maiden and they never really became big in the USA, but still they do represent one of the most classic heavy metal band from UK.
The peak of their success was around 1981-1982 but it was only after 1984 that their popularity fell down.
Anyway here it is a few infos I collected

    UK Top 100 album chart.run
Wheels of steel: 10-5-12-13-13-20-18-23-38-32-36-44-32-26-26-26-25-25-38-24-35-30-43-45-46-49-58-49-62 (tot. 29 weeks)
Strong arm: 18-11-26-38-45-59-69-69-61-48-57-57-68 (tot. 13 weeks)
Denim and leather. 9-11-11-14-16-32-47-66-87-80-100 (tot. 11 weeks)
Eagle has landed: 9-5-12-14-24-29-34-37-47-58-48-62-41-39-62-96-79-82-95 (tot. 19 weeks)
Power and glory: 15-17-21-18-27-35-39-60-68 (tot. 9 weeks)
    Crusader: 18-19-27-30-46-60-96 (tot. 7 weeks)
Innocence is no excuse: 36-38-45-78 (tot. 4 weeks)
Rock the nations: 34-57-89 (tot. 3 weeks)
    Destiny: 49-72 (tot. 2 weeks)

    UK certifications

Wheels of steel and strong arm of the law: gold
denim and leather and eagle has landed: silver

    US Top 200 album chart

Power and glory no. 155 (10 weeks)
    Crusader no. 174 (6 weeks)
Innocence is no excuse: no. 130 (8 weeks)
Rock the nations: no. 149 (4 weeks)

Regarding their total sales it is difficult to give a total figure which should be somewhere between 5 to 10 million copies, their most famous albums like Wheels of steel, strong arm of the law and denim and leather should all reached one millon copies worldwide, while Power and glory and Innocence should have sold more or less 100,000 copies in the USA.

I love Saxon, but I never really gathered any chart information about them. They never were that commercially succesful.

But they sure released some classic albums alright! These 3-in-a-row from 1980/1981 being my favorites:

Edsel will issue Sold Book Of Rock, a massive 14-disc Saxon deluxe set in August, that delivers an enormous amount of audio and video material and comes as an exclusive edition (500 only) signed by Biff Byford.

Sold Book Of Rock contains all nine studio albums (with eight bonus tracks) issued between 1991 and 2009, along with two bonus CDs: Classics Re-Recorded originally issued with the initial pressings of Killing Ground, and Lionheart – rough studio mix, which was originally put out on the 2006 limited edition.

Saxon / The CD Hoard five-disc bookset
                            http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/news/ ... c-bookset/
                            by Paul Sinclair

In 2016 Edsel issued an Saxon 8LP vinyl box set called The Vinyl Hoard and the label have now responded to fan requests for this be issued on CD and are preparing The CD Hoard for a March release.

This five-CD bookset does the same job, of course, showcasing four tours from between 1995 and 2006, namely The Dogs Of War Tour from ’95 (on two CDs), The Lionheart Tour (2004), the 25th anniversary Night Out With The Boys Tour from 2005 and the Rock Sound Festival from 2006.

The CD Hoard features the same cover art, a painting by the band’s artist-in-residence, Paul Gregory and is packaged as a 24-page book.

Amazon in the UK have an exclusive version of this set (limited to 500 copies) which includes four postcards. While postcards may not have the wow factor of a signed print, it’s worth noting that at the time of writing this edition cheaper than the standard version, sans postcards!

The CD Hoard will be released on 16 March 2018.

Also impacting the chart at the halfway stage is heavy metal act Saxon, who could snag a ninth top 40 album with Thunderbolt (Militia Guard Music). It’s new at No. 16

Yorkshire heavy metal band Saxon amassed nine chart albums in a hurry between 1980 and 1988, three of which reached the Top 10. None of their next 11 studio albums, nor any Saxon compilation came near the Top 75 until their 21st studio album, Battering Ram, debuted and peaked at No.50 (1,996 sales) in 2015. Follow-up Thunderbolt does even better, debuting at No.29 (2,865 sales) to become their highest-charting album since sixth album Crusader reached No.18 in 1984. The band's lead vocalist throughout has been Biff Byford, now 67.
