  • Does anyone know why Billboard counts "Diamonds" towards her R&B #1 hits but does not count it towards her Hot 100 hits?

    Comment

    • ^Maybe she was credited on the R&B chart? I'll look at my 1987 Billboards.

I checked. Janet was credited on the R&B charts! Not on the Hot 100...

        Look on page 29 here:

        https://www.americanradiohistory.com...1987-05-30.pdf

The 100-position R&B chart is missing.

        • Thanks so much! I see, so weird it's not credited on the Hot 100.

            • It's so funny that "Got 'Til It's Gone" was called a flop back in 1997 because it under-performed at Top 40 (though it did do well at R&B peaking at #3 on R&B airplay) yet it became one of her most streamed songs over most of her biggest hits.

              Comment

              • Yeah, but Got Til It's Gone WAS a flop. So much so that her record company cancelled the physical release to maintain her consecutive top 10's. Mariah's record label did the same thing.

                Comment

                • I don't agree. There was still a chance for "Got 'Til It's Gone" to go top 10 on the Hot 100. #3 at R&B radio is nothing to call a flop.

Erykah Badu's "On and On" peaked at #56 on Hot 100 Airplay yet still reached #12 on the Hot 100. 24 positions lowers than GTIG.

Monica's "Why I Love You So Much" peaked at #46 on Hot 100 Airplay yet peaked at #9 on the Hot 100.

Aaliyah's "The One I Gave My Heart To" peaked at #41 on Hot 100 Airplay yet peaked at #8 on the Hot 100

Aaliyah's "If I Only Knew" peaked at #43 on Hot 100 Airplay yet peaked at #11 on Hot 100.

Method Man / Mary J Blige's "I'll Be There For You/You're All I Need To Get By" peaked at #33 on Hot 100 Airplay yet #3 on the Hot 100.

R Kelly's "Down Low (Nobody Has to Know)" peaked at #32 on Hot 100 Airplay yet peaked at #4 on Hot 100.

Dru Hill's "Never Make a Promise" peaked at #61 on Hot 100 Airplay yet #7 on Hot 100.

Dru Hill's "In My Bed" peaked at #36 on Hot 100 Airplay yet #4 on The Hot 100.

There are SOOOO many R&B records from that time that peaked below the Top 30 of Hot 100 Airplay and still reached Top 5 AND Top 10 on the Hot 100. We'll never know at the end of the day but looking at songs that did worse than GTIG on R&B Airplay and Hot 100 Airplay it seems likely that it still may have gone top ten.

                    • Got til its gone wasn't a huge flop it went top 10/20 on most official singles charts.
Top ten - Sweden, Australia, Netherlands, UK, New Zealand, Denmark
Top Twenty - Switzerland, Germany, France, Norway, Finland, Canada, Italy

                      Airplay
#2 Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Italy, France
                      #3 Netherlands

And if it was released as a physical single in the US it probably would of debuted top 10 considering all of her singles released in America before and after did

                      Debuts
                      1995 Scream #5
                      1995 Runaway #3
                      1998 Together again #9
                      1998 I get lonely #3

                      • I agree. It would have probably been another Top 10 for her.

Anyway, I think being her 4th most streamed song on Spotify means something...

                        Comment

                        • Yup. The week I Get Lonely entered at #3 it was #25 on Hot 100 Airplay. Only 11 positions higher than GTIG.

Virgin probably expected an out of the box #1 after "janet." was so massive. Where even most of her album tracks and b-sides were even charting on Hot 100 Airplay or R&B Airplay (And on And On, New Agenda, Where Are You Now, Throb, 70's Love Groove).

Albums "Discipline" and "Number Ones" aren't available, as well as one of her biggest hits, "Runaway." "Diamonds" is not on her page so most people can't even find it.
I wonder what's the reason behind all that, Runaway seems to be there now, but not Twenty Foreplay, nor Number Ones or Discipline albums...

I'd imagine That's the Way Love Goes, Again, What Have You Done for Me Lately, Best Things In Life Are Free and Let's Wait Awhile where probably UK #1 R&B singles based on main chart positions. Possibly giving Janet 10-11 UK #1 R&B singles.

Such a shame they let an EP block "That's the Way Love Goes" from #1 which was technically the #1 single in the UK.

                                          • lovedeluxe or anyone else if they know it,
Janet chart history page on Billboard.com only shows R&B/Hip-Hop airplay peaks of her songs from 1992 onwards.

                                            https://www.billboard.com/music/jane...-history/RBM/4

Thanks to some scans of old Billboard Magazines I've know the peaks (#1) of "What Have You Done For Me Lately", "Nasty" and "When I Think of You" on that list (Black Airplay, as it was named back then). But I couldn't find scans of other old magazines to find out where all the other pre-1992 singles peaked.

                                            Do you have the info?

Just to clarify, I'm asking for the airplay charts, not the positions on the main R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, that is complete on her billboard.com archive page.

I’ve just seen Rhythm Nation was also #1 in January 1990.
                                                And Escapade in March!

                                                I’ll keep looking.

Wow. Pretty impressive! Gosh, I'll say it again, if only those "Black Airplay/R&B airplay" points were included in the Hot 100 it would have been such a game changer for all of her big singles.
