  • I feel like her hiatus from 2008 till 2015 really hurt her because she missed out on an entire generation of teens discovering her catalog. She wasn't on the radio, she wasn't on TV, and her social media presence was non-existent. Heck, she wasn't even on YouTube. So how exactly would anyone in their teens or even early 20s be able to discover her? I'm saying this because I'm 22 and also took me a while to get into her. During the same period, Madonna headlined the Super Bowl, released 2 albums and went on 2 massive world tours. Whitney passed away and that obviously boosted her entire catalog and helped an entire generation discover her. Mariah also released 2 albums, became a judge on American Idol, and promoted her Christmas material like rent was due. Janet released a pointless compilation album in 2009 that nobody asked for then dipped

Extending your fan base is essential if you want to survive the streaming era. You can't just rely on your old fans from the 90s forever because most of them are now in their 30s or 40s and have either moved on or have different priorities in life. They seemed to be doing a decent job in 2018 with the Billboard Music Awards and Made for Now, but then it was radio silence again..

    • Janet Jackson never chase or follow trends or anything that's hot out which why she is so respected by fans a lot of people cause she's original some believe after her brother died she stop caring for her career which I doubt but she was also dealing with depression again so it was very rough she cancelled a album she was gonna put out in 2010 or 2011 when she was doing her Up Close and Personal Tour that didn't happen she done a few interviews in 2012 and then she just dropped off the face of the earth with ease nobody was talking about Janet Jackson whereabouts or cared.

She got so much media attention in 2015 when she announce her return to music cause fans been asking and wondering what in the world ever happened to Janet Jackson she just disappeared without a trace the general public wanted her back cause she is very needed of a legend of her status her peers mainly Madonna and Mariah Carey was out making music and taking full advantage of the streaming era which Janet could have been doing but the labels she was under didn't care to promote her catalog so she created her own record company so she have full control of her work.

She came out with her Unbreakable album her first album in 7 years it was praise but her tour the Unbreakable World Tour was a problem she wasn't ready to return she really put no energy in the Unbreakable era and she got pregnant took another hiatus a lot of people was disappointed but this was all planned in my opinion but whatever.

Janet career started to get a massive resurgence and attention in 2017 when she really came back full force and done her tour over naming it the State Of The World Tour and she really started getting so much attention when it was announce Justin Timberlake would be doing Super Bowl again but mainly in 2018 Janet was on top of the world doing all these festivals and was on TV the whole year really and being gifted with so many awards and honors 2018 was Janet year and 2019 was gonna be her year to she announce her Black Diamond album but Covid took place she had to put everything on hold but this year she should have took advantage of the success of her documentary and put something out.

Allegedly now Janet is starting a high production world tour and will be releasing new music and celebrate the anniversary of The Velvet Rope well we see she needs to put out a album out more importantly.

        It wasn't radio silence.

No Sleeep is eligible for a Gold certification. She announced Black Diamond and then COVID-19 happened.

I know No Sleeep did well for her and so did Unbreakable. I was talking about 2018 onwards aka post Made for Now. She announced an album but hasn't released any singles in 4 years. Not even a buzz single.

These numbers are not really accurate because Together Again and All For You both have a "single version" on the Number Ones compilation gaining thousands of streams daily.

Not to mention those streams are from a Sunday when her numbers always dip (peak is Thursday/Friday).

Yeah, for some reason, some data is still missing. She, Whitney and Madonna have far more radio number ones than what's listed here.

What was popular in Europe wasn't popular in the US. And I always said Janet should've taken advantage of the European success Damita Jo was having. Her neglect of foreign shores during that era hurt her even more, I'm afraid. We knew the American support was gonna be divided due to post-Nipplegate so she should've spent a lot of time in Europe and Asia to make sure Damita Jo's success evened out the backlash.

Guess she was too focused on her relationship with Jermaine to care.

                    • Kworb views on her most popular videos today according to YouTube
                      1. All for You - 20,669
                      2. Make Me - 17,364 (now over 1 million views, her 37th video on YouTube to do so)
                      3. That's the Way Love Goes - 16,700
                      4. Call on Me - 16,624
                      5. Let's Wait Awhile - 11,591 (looks like folks are rediscovering this for some reason lol)
                      6. Doesn't Really Matter - 7,355
                      Total daily views today: 226,183

So after weeks of Make Me being her most viral, things have definitely slowed a bit and All for You is back as her most viewed daily video.

She did try tho. She performed Just A Little While and All Nite on tons of European programs.

I agree she should have still toured Europe and especially Asia (where AFY era was huge and Just a Little While did well) to establish a strong base for future projects.

I feel the downturn in Janet's European success started during the All For You era. She cancelled her entire European tour without rescheduling which likely left many fans, sponsors etc feeling bitter. She also cancelled her performance at the 2001 MTV Europe Awards. And then Vigin could not afford to invest in any more singles or music videos after Son of a Gun due to the Glitter situation.

The album should have had at least two more physical releases in Europe. All For You was a massive hit but the era was short and by the time Damita came out years later there was maybe more damage done than Janet and Virgin were willing to fix.

Together Again is doing so well for views, especially in Europe (which is not surprising).

It is still on the rise in the US, most states it's not in the Top 20 yet, but has reached the Top 10 for Janet's most watched videos (overall this week) in New York & California - according to YouTube's statistics. I wouldn't be surprised if Together Again surpasses Scream in daily views further down the line

The statistics on YouTube are more accurate and detailed than Kworb (as somebody has already pointed out):

She promoted the crap out of Just A Little While in Europe it was a success in multiple Europe countries and the Damita Jo era I believe is Janet most promoted era which also probably why people believe it to be her last true big era it was definitely a more promoted era than All For You like it's suppose to the Damita Jo era she mainly promoted the album in the U.S. Canada and Japan a little bit of Korea she had few interviews out there mind you countries had no idea Janet was blacklisted and some had no clue she dropped an album this why I don't like talking about 2004 cause it's to much but most of her interviews from the Damita Jo era were in the United States, Europe and Asia but the All For You era was when she started to crack with her European audience.

Should've remained put in Europe cause it wasn't enough. And actually she broke through in Europe with the janet. album.

Yeah her canceling the European leg of her AFY tour hurt her base there because it had been growing since the janet. and The Velvet Rope albums. And TVR actually sold better in Europe than the United States. AFY definitely could've had more European success had she not cancel the tour and that unfortunately hurt her. If she did a European arena tour for Damita Jo, the album would've done even better than it did. In the UK, some of the songs did really well (top 20 placements).

Then we have artists like Lauryn Hill that released “The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill” in 1998 and then basically retired from the music industry. She literally disappeared and never released a music album again. You don’t see her on TV, on social media, nothing and her album managed to live and transcend over time becoming a streaming success on the road of hitting 1 billion streams on Spotify alone.

When you have a solid legacy you don’t need to be “re-discovered”, your music will simply live on over time. Go and ask Cyndi Lauper who still gets massive / great streams from her 80s early songs despite not being a trendy or relevant act for over 30 years by now.

                                              • Hello, everyone. I'm compiling Janet's Spotify numbers in order to create a data base similar to the one I have for Madonna, but I'm having a little trouble in merging some songs here and I'd love to take opinions from some of you, who follow her Spotify more regularly.

So, for now I've found the following songs that I'm willing to merge. Are there more versions for me to include or do you think some of these shouldn't be merged at all?

Rhythm Nation (Album + Design + Single EP)

She literally disappeared and never released a music album again. You don’t see her on TV, on social media, nothing and her album managed to live and transcend over time becoming a streaming success on the road of hitting 1 billion streams on Spotify alone.

When you have a solid legacy you don’t need to be “re-discovered”, your music will simply live on over time. Go and ask Cyndi Lauper who still gets massive / great streams from her 80s early songs despite not being a trendy or relevant act for over 30 years by now.
Ridiculous comparisons. Cyndi Lauper was never blacklisted from radio was she? She still toured, released albums and did interviews. She's had a few big 80s hits that were/are constantly played on radio for years. Janet wasn't afforded that privilege. It was radio silence for years.

Those two also never had one of the most powerful people in the industry actively sabotaging their careers either (Les Moonves). Her even tried to block her book.

Also, Janet crossed a billion streams on Spotify alone a few years back. Also hit a billion streams on Pandora around 2016 and Pandora is only available in America. Not exactly peanuts is it?

Are Cindy or Lauryn selling out arena's on their recent tours? Janet is. She sold out multiple arena's on her recent tours and broke attendance records at recent festival dates. I was at Glastonbury when she played. She was very well received and the crowd sang along to her hits here in the UK, All for You, WHYDFML etc. I saw LH is Glasgow few years back, she sold about two thousand tickets in a 13000 seat arena. Pity those mega streaming numbers of theirs never transcended into ticket sales.

There are various factors in Janet's situation. Clearly seems you have some sort problem with anyone daring to suggesting Janet is anything other than some irrelevant flop that you think she is in your head. Classy - constantly trying undermine a black woman's success. There's an 'R' word for that behaviour...
