Take All For You for example, it debuted at number 3 and was almost pushed out of the Top 10 the week after, (even Emma Bunton's What Took You So Long fell from number 1 to 8 that same week). This was because there were 5 new entries in the Top 10 (4 in the Top 5) and all of which were by a separate artist. Pretty much unheard of in other countries during that time.

Janet definitely didn't reach her full potential in the UK.
Ash - free all Angels blocked her too. Wonder what was that week's sales. Afy was #1 at airplay.. Despite mega airplay it stalled #3 surprisingly ..
Like this, lighthaus family's raincloud & Lisa standfield's realthing peaked #9 Despite Being #1 in airplay

    • I wonder how did Janet have the best selling album if 1990. I'm not saying she didn't but maybe her Rhythm Nation sales are underestimated. MC Hammer's album that came out in 1990 spent 21 weeks at #1 and was Diamond by April 1991. Paula's album also spent 9 weeks at #1 during 1990. If I am not mistaken, both albums spent more weeks in the top 10 during that year (correct me if I'm wrong). If Janet's album had sold more than theirs, Rhythm Nation has to be 10x-p/11x-p. That is unless Billboard did not provide the correct info.

      • I think the difference is Janet is just under certified and there's a chance A LOT of people are OVER certified (pre-soundscan).

Janet had one of the biggest tours of 1990. I don't think there's a huge shock 1814 was the #1 album of 1990.

If you look at the sales of "janet." when the Soundscan era came into effect. None of her competition with the exception of the "Bodyguard" soundtrack really live up to what they sold pre-Soundscan/RIAA certs.

We know 1814 is certified for 6 million and that doesn't include club sales because they weren't allowed in certs until 1995. It has sold over 2 million in the Soundscan era (including SPS), which would bring it to 8 million in KNOWN sales, this still doesn't include any shipments after it was last certified and club sales, the album was available through BMG and Columbia House.

1814 being diamond shouldn't be a shock to anyone.

        • All For You becomes her 3rd song to cross 100 million (combined) on Spotify. Her Spotify streams have gotten much better. Up next us 'Got Til Its Gone'

          • Why can't Janet Jackson just update her sales globally most of her peers are updating their stats every time you turn around and the fact her music still does well despite her catalog being half block is great she needs to update her sales in the U.K. don't know where she falls in sales female wise in selling records in the U.K. and then the U.S. I know Janet is a top 10 female artist who sold the most albums globally and I'm pretty sure she's a top 10 female in selling records globally.

I always say if she had a team that put a focus on her European base, her sales would be even bigger and she would eventually get UK number ones. Alas, that never happened.

UK sales are automatic so I don't think she can do anything but they've been under-certified in the US for God knows how long.

My guess is as soon as she decided to leave A&M for Virgin, they stopped auditing sales for her. I mean technically it continued to 1992 but that's been the last time it's gotten a certification.

I believe All For You (album) opened with around 30-32K in UK, and you're correct it was blocked by Free All Angels - Ash. I think it missed number 1 by just over 700 copies. As for the single it opened with 59,000, this was actually set to reach number 1 during the first half of the week, but plummeted in the second.

Design of a Decade was also blocked by (What's The Story) Morning Glory - Oasis. It's opening sales were 54,415 (UK's highest for an album from Janet) but idk how far ahead Oasis were, probably sold at least 90K.

                          • And to be fair.. "That's the Way Love Goes" was the #1 single in the UK, unfortunately was blocked by an EP.

Are EP's still allowed to chart on the singles chart in the UK or are they pushed to the albums chart now?

EP's are pretty much a thing of the past now (at least here in the UK anyway). A few of us were having this conversation several days ago and I appreciate your input. I've never heard of Five Live, but it was by George Michael, Queen & Lisa Stansfield. This was released as a charity single in the UK, however an album in the majority. I assume EP's are still eligible as they have not been officially declared as excluded, however I read that the last one to enter the singles chart stalled at 37 in 2009.

Same with Janet having 18 consecutive Top 10 singles in the US, many people claim The Beatles & Elvis Presley had more.

It's a controversial one, regardless Janet deserved that UK number 1 single.

I think Janet has the most for back to back for a woman, I think she has 19 and Madonna has 18?

And yeah, technically the #1 "single" in the UK really was "That's the Way Love Goes".

All For You (album) opened with 37,000 copies sold (36,900) in the UK.

It debuted with higher first week sales than janet. (31,000) and The Velvet Rope (19,000).

                                  #1 Ash - 39,900
                                  #2 Janet - 36,900
                                  #3 Stereophonics - 36,100
                                  #4 Dido - 35,500
                                  #5 Feeder - 32,300

The All For You album missed #1 by 3,000 copies but as you can see, the sales in the Top 5 were really close and competitive that week.

All For You (single) was leading in sales at the start or the tracking week but was overtaken by around 2,700 units on the Wednesday and ended up debuting at #3.

Even in the US, Janet had a bit of bad luck this era as Billboard had predicted Someone To Call My Lover needed 60,000 sales to reach #1. It out-did those numbers with 65,000 copies sold and still missed the #1 position by 6,500 units.

It debuted with higher first week sales than janet. (31,000) and The Velvet Rope (19,000).

                                    #1 Ash - 39,900
                                    #2 Janet - 36,900

The same thing happened when All For You (single) stalled at number 3 in the UK.

                                    1. What Took You So Long - Emma Bunton (64,000)
                                    2. It Wasn't Me - Shaggy (61,000)

I copied and pasted this but counting U.K. R&B album charts etc her numbers should be higher so she should have sold at least 7-8 million records? I don't know how UK do their sales figures but every continent sales estimations is different when the United States it's easier but I remember reading somewhere Janet is one of the artists to have the most charting entries in the UK.

I don't know how UK do their sales figures but every continent sales estimations is different when the United States it's easier but I remember reading somewhere Janet is one of the artists to have the most charting entries in the UK.
With Janet being #6 of the 90s in the UK, why is she always called a "local act" by other fans.

"Together Again" has outsold most #1's from the 90's there as well. Just never got to #1.

She's only called local by Madonna fans cause they hold on to the shade Janet said about Madonna in that old 90's interview you know that she has more class than Madonna anybody who disrespects or try to diminish Janet success are Madonna fans well majority of them can't say all her fans but Janet is arguably Madonna biggest rival it's the same as majority of Madonna fans attacking Mariah Carey they always target Janet and Mariah cause both shaded Madonna despite Madonna starting it but that's a whole different topic for another time but they know Janet isn't local don't know how a artist who sold possibly in the range of 200 million records and albums is considered local when every single time Janet visits a country she's surrounded and swarmed by fans trying to get pictures with her.

And I find it funny a lot of Madonna fans keep this feud going when neither Janet or Mariah acknowledge their feuds with Madonna and likewise for Madonna when ask Janet and Mariah say Madonna makes great music and likewise for Madonna.

Well Elvis and the Beatles did have more BUT they don't hold the record of most consecutive top tens. But technically they did have more top tens:

                                                    Elvis: 33
                                                    The Beatles: 31

But they don't have Janet's record and it's beautiful because every time stans of other artists will tell you how artists have more top tens than this artist and you can always counter with "well do they hold a record for most consecutive top tens?"
