    • Control - All For You sales are usually fine but Damita Jo - Unbreakable is where it gets shaky I had no idea Damita Jo and Discipline was selling through BMG wonder why the 20 Y.O. album wasn't Damita Jo probably didn't do much for obvious reasons but Discipline would have if Island didn't mess up the album rollout.

Doesn't Really Matter is eligible for platinum and Call On Me should be eligible for gold possibly.

Looks like BMG had "20 Y.O" as well. They featured it on the front page of the catalog for 2 months! Feb & March!

Won't see any other certification for this album. Maybe just "Call on Me" going gold. lol

Very likely. I think janet could also be 4x plat. It was #1 for 3 consecutive weeks when it debuted and went back to #1 when she toured the country in 1995

Based off these we're at over 2 million. I wonder how Janet did in Spain & Denmark, I haven't seen any sales information for either prior to the The Velvet Rope.

If you look at the European Albums Chart in Music & Media, they list what nations an album charted in that week.

                                According to the chart:

                                Belgium - 18 weeks (minimum)
                                Denmark - 16 weeks (minimum)

In 1993, Music & Media combined the charts for Flanders and Wallonia to make one averaged chart to publish in their magazine. On this chart for the whole of Belgium, janet. spent 5 weeks in the Top 10:

                                10-7-6-8-9

The rest of the chart run is unknown. However, the album was certified Gold (25,000) in 1995 and the album was still entering Belgium Wallonia's album chart for two weeks that year. The album had strong initial sales and longivity. 25,000 total sales seems way too low.

In Denmark, janet. never entered the Top 10 so the peak is unknown/unpublished but it charted for at least 16 weeks. Design of a Decade peaked at #5 and also charted for 16 (known) weeks. The Velvet Rope was massive in Denmark (2x Platinum and possibly even 3x Platinum). It seems unlikely her previous album struggled to sell less than 1/4 what TVR did. Janet was clearly already an established star in Scandinavia.

If the certifications for "janet" were ever updated:
                                1x Gold Germany - 1x Platinum (500,000)
                                1x Gold Netherlands - 1x Platinum (100,000)
                                1x Gold Switzerland - 1x Platinum (50,000)
                                1x Gold Belgium - 1x Platinum (50,000)
NA Denmark - 1x Gold or Platinum (25-50,000)

Tons of missing Platinum certs. And that's just for Europe in nations we have data for!

For sure, with DOAD perhaps being her biggest seller. I wonder if TVR also hit 1M? It shipped 400k in Japan. Together Again, Got Til Its Gone and Everytime were hits in Southeast Asia but we do not know how many were shipped in other asian markets

I think Rhythm Nation may be closer to the 1 million mark in Asian but I'm not sure if either album did well outside of Japan.

Oh yes. You have a point. RN sold 500k in 1990 in Japan alone and she went back to Japan to close out the RN tour where she played stadiums. I think 3x plat in Japan is not out of the cards. It was also certified platinum in Taiwan in 1990.

There was also the Asian financial crisis in 1997 which caused a big drop in music sales, especially for foreign releases. In Japan alone foreign shipments dropped 10% and it was probably even worse in other markets.

                                          The Velvet Rope
                                          2x Platinum Japan (400,000) (January 1999)
                                          1x Platinum Philippines (40,000) (1998 Billboard AD)
                                          1x Gold Taiwan (25,000) (1998 Billboard AD)
                                          1x Silver Thailand (10,000) (1998 Billboard AD)

Sales were definitely much lower than her previous releases so I'm not sure if it sold 1M in Asia.

The album was also banned in Singapore which was a small market but a lot of western albums sold really well there in the mid-90s (Madonna, Mariah, Celine etc) hence why EMI tried hard to have the album approved for release. Design Of A Decade was a big hit in Singapore and likely has multi-Platinum sales. TVR had zero.

It's likely the album wasn't heavily shipped and possibly even banned in some other conservative regions as well. It was for example released in Malaysia but maybe suffered from lower sales due to the Singapore controversy and hence it wasn't certified there when Virgin published that advertisement with updated sales in 1998.

I remember that ad. Would you know when in 1998 it was published by Billboard? I remember the ad had Japan at 1x platinum only (It was only due to the auction that we found out that it was 2x platinum in 1999) so perhaps the other certifications are outdated? TVR singles were in constant rotation in MTV SEA and Channel V for 2 years so I know it was quite popular.

                                              • There were so many plaques/certifications in her auction we had no idea about.

Imagine if her catalog got a proper worldwide audit.

                                                  • Control (single) received a platinum plaque (again we know this because of her auction) but wasnt published on the RIAA website. So she has 3 from the Control era. Does anybody know why it is absent from the RIAA database? Pleasure Principle and Lets Wait A While, both gold, are alao absent on the RIAA database.
