  • I didn't include it because it's not listed on the RIAA website.

"any certifications your label has asked to embargo will not appear on the riaa.com website until the label contact requests them to be included."

    https://www.riaa.com/gold-platinum/apply/

Maybe A&M at the time asked the RIAA to have those embargoed for timing reasons and forgot to allow them to be visible.

    • ^^Because A&M never paid for the certification.

It happens. Labels present RIAA awards to artists and the label doesn't pay the RIAA for the fee of the cert.

It does happen and it's very messy. A&M seemed very cheap. Then again, so did Virgin.

I remember the ad had Japan at 1x platinum only (It was only due to the auction that we found out that it was 2x platinum in 1999) so perhaps the other certifications are outdated? TVR singles were in constant rotation in MTV SEA and Channel V for 2 years so I know it was quite popular.
The advertisement was published by Billboard in the 1998-07-11 issue.

Following that ad in July 1998, the album was certified:
            3x Platinum Canada (September 1998)
            2x Platinum Australia (Nov 26 1998)
            2x Platinum Japan (January 1999)
            3x Platinum US (January 1999)

So it was still selling but it does give us a general idea of how the album performed.

Sorry for the delay. I was in the hospital until yesterday and could collect the numbers a few hours before Spotify updated Friday's number today. Actually, I think the monthly listeners and followers were updated already, but I've included them anyways.

PS.: Streams from compilation versions and radio/single edits are merged with the original song's totals.
PS2.: The small number at the song's titles means how many different versions are merged together for the final totals.

Mariah Carey’s Emotions charted for 38 weeks in the Top 100 of the Canadian Albums chart (1991-1992)

                            Peak: #6
                            1991 YE: #35
                            1992 YE: #95

The album was certified 2x Platinum (200,000) on January 15, 1992.
                            Re-certified 4x Platinum (400,000) on April 30 1996

Rhythm Nation charted for 79 weeks in the Top 100 of the Canadian Albums chart (1989-1991)

                            Peak: #5
                            1989 YE: #53
                            1990 YE: #25
                            1991 YE: NA

The album was certified 1x Platinum (100,000) on September 27, 1989.

Rhythm Nation debuted at #19 in Canada for the week September 25-30 1989.
So over 100,000 copies were shipped before the album even came out.

The janet. album was certified for 300,000 copies in December 1993 as seen in her auction and then never again.
It was still in the Top 10 during the 1993 Christmas shopping season and January 1994. (YE #9, #54)

NONE of Janet’s albums in Canada were ever re-certified more than a year after their release.

Just like in Japan, we have no idea how much her albums sold over the years but can try and guess total sales based off their original chart runs.

                            My estimates:
                            Control - 4x Platinum (400,000)
                            Rhythm Nation - 5x Platinum (+500,000)
                            janet. - 5x or 6x Platinum (+550,000)
                            Design Of A Decade - 3x or 4x Platinum (+350,000)
                            The Velvet Rope - 4x Platinum (400,000)

                                • Virgin Records went thru it. Their most global act, the Spice Girls fell completely off with their 3rd album in 2000. Aaliyah died and Mariah did not do well with Glitter in 2001. A few years later, the Superbowl had a major impact on radio and shipments in 2004 for Janet. They went thru it.

                                  • I think we're all in agreement that 4 million is the floor for Janet in Japan. I wouldn't be surprised if 2.5-3 million is the floor for Canada.

Never has. Madonna, Celine, Mariah and Whitney all benefited from performing in Brazil even if it was once for some of them. I think her South American sales are very low actually. She had a few popular songs there but not to the magnitude of the other four.
