  • Mariah Carey :: The "Christmas" Eras

Mariah's second christmas album will be released in Nov. 2nd, but I guess we can already open a thread for it since the press release just came out with many details

Mariah Carey Completes Merry Christmas II You - Second Holiday Album From the Greatest Singer of Our Time, Arriving November 2nd

"ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU" - ALL-TIME #1 PLATINUM STANDARD - IS RE-RECORDED IN BRAND NEW VERSION FOR NEW ALBUM

INCLUDES FOUR NEW ORIGINAL SONGS WRITTEN BY MARIAH, INCLUDING THE FIRST SINGLE "OH SANTA"

As autumn leaves begin to fall, international superstar Mariah Carey puts the finishing touches on MERRY CHRISTMAS II YOU, her second career album of holiday tunes, arriving November 2nd on the Island Def Jam Music Group. Highlighting the long-awaited new album is a brand new recording of Mariah's all-time standard, "All I Want For Christmas Is You."

In addition to traditional yuletide fare - "The First Noel," "Little Drummer Boy," "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "O Come All Ye Faithful" and more - MERRY CHRISTMAS II YOU also contains four original songs composed by Mariah, including the new single, "Oh Santa," and many more surprises for the fans. Producers on the new album include American Idol's Randy Jackson, multi-platinum hit-making producer Jermaine Dupri, James Poyser (acclaimed producer for Aretha Franklin, The Roots, Lauryn Hill and more), and five-time Oscar nominee and Grammy/Tony/Emmy award winning composer Marc Shaiman.

Since it was first released, "All I Want For Christmas Is You," written by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff, has become one of the essential musical hallmarks of the holiday season, and continues to set sales records each year. The song hit #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles Recurrents chart every year from 2005 to 2008. After ringtones began to be charted in 2006, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" hit #1 for the next three consecutive holiday seasons. It became the first seasonal Mastertone to be certified RIAA gold (2006) and RIAA platinum (2007), and is ranked as the top-selling seasonal ringtone of all-time. "All I Want For Christmas is You" was the featured single from MERRY CHRISTMAS, which has sold over 12 million to date.

MERRY CHRISTMAS II YOU is Mariah Carey's 13th studio album, and follows up her worldwide multi-million-selling Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel (released September 2009), her multi-platinum E=MC˛ (2008), and worldwide 10 million selling The Emancipation Of Mimi (2005). The Emancipation Of Mimi generated three Grammy awards (including Best Contemporary R&B Album), two #1 singles, and countless more honors during its 18-month chart stay. Soundscan's biggest-selling album of 2005, Mimi featured "We Belong Together" (Grammy winner for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song) and "Don't Forget About Us," Mariah's 16th and 17th #1 career singles, respectively. They tied one of the most enduring chart records in Billboard Hot 100 history, Elvis Presley's 17 #1's.

Three years later, Mariah surpassed Elvis when "Touch My Body" (from E=MC˛) became her 18th #1 Hot 100 hit. "Touch My Body" spent two weeks at the top, Mariah's 78th and 79th cumulative career weeks at #1, which tied Elvis' long-standing all-time high of 79 weeks at #1, as calculated by Billboard. Mariah is now positioned as the only active recording artist in the 50 years of the Hot 100 (which began in 1958) with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 #1 hits. The success of E=MC˛ brought total sales of Mariah's albums, singles and videos to more than 200 million worldwide, distancing her even further from the pack as the top-selling female recording artist in history.

For the record, Billboard just published updated figures from her previous christmas album - "Merry Christmas" sold over 5,000,000 copies according to Soundscan and the album's first single, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is Mariah's best-selling digital song with over 1,600,000 copies sold.

As MCIIY will include a new version of AIWFCIY and the track always sells a lot every season, it will be interesting to see how much it will move this december and if Billboard will allow the track to finally re-chart and have a more significant peak on the Hot 100. Also, the album was certified 5x Platinum by RIAA in 2003 when it was around 4.2M through Soundscan so after this season it will probably be eligible for 6x Platinum!

Honestly, considering her current state on the music scene, I guess we should be happy with Gold but I'm hoping for a Platinum certification - 2x Platinum would be a dream come true, but I really can't see her having a big hit with "Oh Santa" or anything else that would push the album sales that high, even more if she goes hard into the R&B/Hip Hop territory like she's been doing 99% of the time these days

Hopefully she'll go on Oprah and all those other talk shows and sing her heart out. Hopefully her older fans will rush out and buy the album. I want her to have a platinum seller with this one so bad.

I made a sales expectation on the subo album thread, now i do it here too.

                sales expectation/prediction

                US:
                Soundcan: 386,000
                RIAA: Gold

                EU: 300,000
                UK: Gold

                Rest of World: 150,000
                Japan: 80,000

I bet the BB200 chartrun will look something like this: 1-4-16-24-19-9-33-117-189
                First week sales: 113,000

I think 50% of this will be right.

A Christmas album debuting at #1 in the US when it's being released 3 weeks before Thanksgiving? I don't think so. There won't be enough interest in holiday albums yet.

I thought they were expecting a relatively low first sales week but then sales increasing as the holiday approaches. Then releasing the single to radio right around/after Thanksgiving. That's the usual release pattern, no?

IDK, i believe that many fans will treat this like a new studio album and rush to the stores to buy it in the first week. I have a feeling that it will debut quite high but drop severely after that.

I disagree with this, I think this will sell at least 800k in the US. My real prediction is much higher but ill keep it to myself for now at least till I hear oh santa

                        thanks to PosziMC2

Mariah Carey’s “Merry Christmas II You ” will be released in Brazil

Although the country does not have a strong tradition of Christmas carols, Universal Music has decided to launch the title in the country due to overwhelming demand of the singer.

Mariah’s Merry Christmas II You is scheduled for 09 November, 2010; a week after the North American launch .

I think the album will debut in the Top 10 then fall until it gets closer to Christmas with a peak inside the I'll be happy if this gets certified Gold.

I want it to go Platinum though.

I hope the quality of the album is vintage Mariah, then the sales will speak for itself. The first one is great so hopefully she made this one as fantastic.

I hope she has Groban-ish success, with the right appearances, the right song and the right performances, this album should do very well.
Oh I won't ask for much this Christmas, I won't even wish for snow

                                This should go platinum.

Since people will assume this is "better" and more "classic" Mariah album, this album should do well.

It's platinum or FAIL for this era.

you should be aware that there aren't so many artists/albums going platinum anymore. more realistic would be half of what Memoirs did.

Mariah or not, this is a market in decline, even at Christmas. Stevyy has a point in here. I don't think this album will go platinum, but as long as it achieves Gold, I'll be satisfied. Don't forget this album will basically be sold for 9 weeks only. And like only 3 or 4 of those are really important for this album.
