  • Nas :: Charts & Sales History

    Paul Grein's Yahoo! Chart Watch:

    8/4 Billboard charts:

All artists need to stay relevant, and there's probably no genre where that's more important than rap. That's why Nas' accomplishment this week is so impressive. Nas' Life Is Good enters The Billboard 200 at #1, a little more than 16 years after he first topped the chart with It Was Written. Only one hip-hop artist has had a longer span of #1 albums. Beastie Boys, whose identity encompasses pop, rap and alternative, has had #1 albums spanning 17 years and three months, from Licensed To Ill (March 1987) to To The 5 Boroughs (June 2004).

You don't need me to tell you that 16 years is a long time. 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. were both alive and well in July 1996, when It Was Written entered the chart at #1. Justin Bieber was two years old, just learning to say "baby-baby-baby" (a phrase that would come in handy later in life).

Wanna know the rap artists who are next in line behind Beastie Boys and Nas for the longest spans of #1 albums? Jay-Z's #1 albums span 12 years and 10 months, from Vol. 2…Hard Knock Life (October 1998) to Watch The Throne (with Kanye West, Aug. 2011). Eminem's span 10 years and three months, from The Marshall Mathers LP (May 2000) to Recovery (August 2010).

Life Is Good is Nas' fifth #1 album, not counting a 1997 album by the rap collective The Firm. That album, The Firm-The Album, also featured Foxy Brown, AZ and Nature. Only two rap artists in history have had more than five #1 albums. Jay-Z leads with 12; Eminem has had six (not counting two albums he recorded as part of D12). Tied with Nas with five #1 albums are DMX, Kanye West and 2 Pac.

Life Is Good sold 149K copies this week, which is the second biggest one-week total so far this year for a hip-hop album. It trails Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which opened with sales of 253K in April. Life Is Good sold 69K digital copies, which puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums.

NAS VS. ZAC, GASLIGHT ANTHEM, PASSION PIT DEBUT

Summer Dog Days Officially Start Barking

        July 25, 2012

It’ll be an OG rapper vs. a country-rocker for the top spot on next week’s HITS Album chart.

The last two best-sellers—Nas’ Def Jam/IDJ album, Life is Good, and Zac Brown Band’s Atlanti9c release Uncaged, #1-2 on this week’s chart—should vie for the lead on Tuesday’s tally as well.

                                  https://music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-wat ... 51775.html

Nas's 1994 debut album, "Illmatic," re-enters the chart at #18, thanks to the release of a 20th anniversary edition dubbed "Illmatic XX." "Illmatic" debuted and peaked at #12 in April 1994. It has sold 1,686,000 copies. The album vaults from #112 to #1 on Top Catalog Albums. A 10th anniversary edition, "Illmatic 10th Anniversary," topped the catalog chart 10 years ago

Willypedia posted this over on the hip-hop thread:

The sales figures of Nas’ albums are as follows, as of March 2014. All figures below are in the following format: Album title, Label, Year, Sales Total.

                                        Lost Tapes Columbia 2002 361,000

                                        Street’s Disciple Columbia 2004 724,000

Hip Hop Is Dead Def Jam 2006 785,000

                                        Untitled Def Jam 2008 480,000

Life Is Good Def Jam 2012 380,000

                                        TOTAL: 13,960,000

NOTE: The Firm album (which actually went Platinum), Distant Relatives with Damian Marley and Nas' Greatest Hits were not included on the list. Nas has already crossed the 15 millions mark.
Since then we have had the Illmatic re-release - it sold about 15,000 on its first week out for a grand total of 1,686,232 - in the weeks since it has probably added another 10k or so to that total, pushing it very close to 1.7mil sold

No clue on the actual sales for The Firm or the Greatest Hits album, last update for Distant Relatives was around 250k (a long time ago), but I would estimate it's closer to 300k now.

TOP 20: CARTER COUNTRY & SUMMER HEAT (UPDATE)

With one day of sales and streams info for The Carters it should be a close race for #1 against 5 Seconds of Summer. The wild card in that contest is what Tidal will report. Meanwhile, how much more momentum will the late XXXtentacion gain in the wake of his death, as fans flock to streaming and retail for his work?
