Mariah Carey's 'Christmas' Back Atop Hot 100, As Dean Martin, Wham! & Chuck Berry Hit Top 10
          By Gary Trust
          12/28/2020

Wham!'s "Last Christmas" likewise jingles to the Hot 100's top 10 for the first time (14-9). First released in 1984, it ascends with 28.3 million streams (up 41%), 19.1 million in airplay audience (up 5%) and 6,000 sold (up 38%).

The duo of George Michael (who died in 2016; like Martin, on Christmas Day) and Andrew Ridgeley adds its seventh Hot 100 top 10, after charting its first six in 1984-86: the No. 1s "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," "Careless Whisper" and "Everything She Wants"; the No. 3 hits "Freedom" and "I'm Your Man"; and the No. 10-peaking "The Edge of Heaven." Wham! appears in the top 10 for the first time since Aug. 23, 1986 (the last week in the top 10 for "Heaven"); Subsequently, Michael notched 14 solo top 10s, including seven No. 1s, through 1996.

              • Wham 89 units behind Mariah for UK #1!

Last Christmas (Sony CG) could finally reach a new peak at the top of the charts on Friday (January 1). The single (actually a double A-side with Everything She Wants) by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley was famously held off the top spot by Band Aid for five weeks during December 1984.

In the Midweek sales flash, the beloved ’80s pop duo were just 89 sales behind Mariah Carey, who was on 34,888 by the end of Wednesday (Official Charts Company).

                                            • Wham! achieved #1 with just 714 sales ahead of Mariah.

Wham!’s Last Christmas has finally made No.1 after 36 years.

Last Christmas was famously held off the top spot by Band Aid during Christmas 1984. The single has now climbed 3-1 to reach the summit.

Since 2007, shortly after downloads were introduced, Last Christmas has re-entered the Top 40 on a further 13 occasions, reaching No.2 again in 2018. The track has post-1994 sales of 2,218,063.

Last Christmas (Sony CG) has finally reached No.1 on the fourth anniversary of George Michael’s death on Christmas Day in 2016. The first chart of 2021 covers sales from December 25-31.

The Wham! song has also set a new record for the longest time taken for a single to reach No.1, at 36 years, overtaking Tony Christie’s (Is This The Way To) Amarillo, which took 33 years and four months to reach the summit in 2005.

Last Christmas’ rise to No.1 follows the same achievement by Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You (Columbia) last month. Carey’s single was in front of Wham! earlier this week, but the duo edged ahead and Last Christmas finished on 40,149 sales – just 714 more than All I Want For Christmas Is You.

Last Christmas racked up 9.2 million streams in the past week.

But it was a chart battle in which superior download sales helped Wham! to finally reach No.1. Last Christmas sold 1,555 downloads last week compared to 761 for All I Want For Christmas Is You – a lead of 794 that was, ultimately, crucial to their victory. If any Wham! and George Michael fans were encouraging fellow devotees on social media to download the track to help the weekly sales total, then it’s a low-key campaign that’s clearly paid off.
