Aretha Franklin's Music Sales Gain 1,568% in U.S. Following Her Death
By Keith Caulfield | August 17, 2018
Following the death of Aretha Franklin on Thursday (Aug. 16), sales of the Queen of Soul’s music catalog grew tremendously in the U.S., according to initial sales reports from Nielsen Music.
Her combined album and digital song sales increased by 1,568 percent on Aug. 16, as compared to Aug. 15. On the day of her passing, the legendary diva sold 134,000 combined albums and digital song downloads, up from 8,000 the previous day.
Isolating just Franklin’s digital songs, they sold 115,000 downloads – up 1,569 percent versus the day before, when they sold 7,000.
Franklin’s top 10 selling songs on Aug. 16 were: “Respect” (16,000), “A Natural Woman (You Make Me Feel Like)” (13,000), “I Say a Little Prayer” (10,000), “Chain of Fools” (8,000), “Think” (8,000), “Freeway of Love” (4,000), “Until You Come Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)” (4,000), “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me), with George Michael (4,000), “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)” (3,000) and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (3,000).
In terms of album sales, her assorted titles sold 19,000 copies on Aug. 16, an increase of 1,566 percent over the 1,000 copies her albums sold on Aug. 15.
Her top five selling albums on Aug. 16 included four best-of collections, along with her iconic gospel set, Amazing Grace. Her top sellers were: 30 Greatest Hits (10,000), Amazing Grace (2,000), Queen of Soul: The Best of Aretha Franklin (1,000), Soul Queen (1,000) and The Best of Aretha Franklin (1,000).
Further news about streaming gains of Franklin’s catalog will be reported in the coming days. An array of her albums and songs are also expected to make an impact on next week’s Billboard charts.

Travis Scott's 'Astroworld' Spends Second Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart
8/19/2018 by Keith Caulfield
Plus: Nicki Minaj, Trippie Redd and Jason Mraz debut in the top 10, while Aretha Franklin re-enters at No. 7.
Aretha Franklin’s 30 Greatest Hits jumps back onto the chart, as it re-enters at No. 7 with 35,000 units (with 13,000 of that sum in album sales) following Franklin’s death on Aug. 16. The Hits package is up 13,048 percent in units earned, while the album’s sales soared 12,693 percent.
The album’s surge comes largely from one day of reaction to Franklin’s passing, as she died on the final day of the tracking week. In turn, we’ll likely see further gains next week following the first full chart tracking frame after her death.
30 Greatest Hits is Franklin’s highest charting album since 1972, when her landmark gospel release Amazing Grace peaked at No. 7 on the July 22, 1972-dated tally. All told, 30 Greatest Hits is Franklin’s seventh top 10 effort on the Billboard 200, and first since Amazing. Franklin has gone as high as No. 2, twice, with I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You (1967) and Aretha: Lady Soul (1968).
30 Greatest Hits was released in 1985, but didn’t chart until 2012, when it spent two weeks on the list (then-peaking at No. 117).

Aretha's '30 Greatest Hits' Has A Chart Comeback
Aug 20, 2018 by FYI Staff 0
Travis Scott’s Astroworld spends its second straight week at the top of the Billboard Canadian Albums chart, with 13,000 total consumption units accrued in the period. The album, again, has the highest on-demand stream total for the week with 16.5 million reported by various platforms.
Nicki Minaj’s Queen is the top new entry of the week, debuting at No. 2, picking up the highest album and song download sales in the seven-day window. It is her second-highest debut to date, only surpassed by her lone chart-topper, 2012’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. It tops the No. 6 peak of her last album, 2015’s The Pinkprint.
Drake’s Scorpion slips one position, to 3. His single, “In My Feelings,” remains at No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart.
Two other new releases enter in the top ten: US rapper Trippie Redd’s debut full-length album Life’s A Trip debuts at No. 5, and Jason Mraz’s Know comes in at No. 10. This is Mraz’s fourth straight top ten album.
Following the passing of Aretha Franklin on Thursday, her legendary catalogue saw a significant uptick in consumer interest, led by her Canadian-compiled 1985 compilation album 30 Greatest Hits, which debuts at 17.
After four weeks in the runner-up position, Maroon 5’s “Girls Like You” returns to No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart for the sixth week.

After debuting at No.67 last week primarily on sales registered in the few hours between the announcement of her death and the end of the trading week, Aretha Franklin’s 2007 compilation Soul Queen now surges to No.15 (4,603 sales), to become only her second Top 10 album, nearly 50 years after the first, Aretha Now, which reached No.6 in October 1968. There are re-entries for Respect: The Very Best Of (No.27, 2,355 sales), which debuted and peaked at No.16 in 2002 and A Brand New Me (No.45, 1,698 sales), which debuted and peaked at No.61 last December, and adds new Royal Philharmonic Orchestra orchestrations to classic Aretha tracks. 1986 compilation 30 Greatest Hits becomes Franklin’s 14th chart album, making its first ever appearance at No.27 (2,355 sales).

Ariana Grande Earns Third No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Sweetener'
By Keith Caulfield | August 26, 2018 3:00 PM EDT
Aretha Franklin’s 30 Greatest Hits climbs 7-6, granting the diva her highest-charting album in 50 years. 30 Greatest Hits ascends with 52,000 units earned in the tracking week (up 49 percent), with 18,000 of that sum coming from traditional album sales (up 47 percent).
30 Greatest Hits is Franklin’s highest charting album since the Aug. 31, 1968-dated list, when Aretha Now was at No. 4, after previously peaking at No. 3 (Aug. 17 and 24).
30 Greatest Hits rises after the set experiences its first full chart week of activity following Franklin’s death on Aug. 16. A week ago, the album re-entered the list at No. 7, effectively from one day of impact after her passing (as the chart’s tracking week ended on Aug. 16).
