Kanye West, Mac Miller, J Cole: Hip-Hop's Super Tuesday
By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | June 14, 2013

Next week could be the biggest for new rap albums in two-and-a-half years.

June 18 sees the release of three hip-hop sets that are all on course for sizable sales debuts: Kanye West's "Yeezus," J. Cole's "Born Sinner" and Mac Miller's "Watching Movies With the Sound Off."

According to early sales forecasts from industry sources, "Yeezus" might sell 500,000 copies in its first week. Behind him will likely be "Born Sinner" with perhaps 150,000 to 200,000. "Watching Movies With the Sound Off" could sell as much as 100,000.

Billboard 200 Chart Preview: Kanye West's Lead Over J. Cole Shrinks
By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | June 21, 2013

After three full days on sale, Kanye West's "Yeezus" is still forecast to be No. 1 on next week's Billboard 200 chart. However, its lead over J. Cole's "Born Sinner" has shrunk to about 50,000 copies.

Industry sources are now projecting that "Yeezus" could finish the week (which ends at the close of business on June 23) with 330,000 to 340,000 sold. On Wednesday, insiders had pegged the album to start with 360,000 to 380,000.

As for J. Cole's second album, "Born Sinner," its forecast is steady: the set should sell 280,000 to 300,000. On Wednesday, sources said it might do 270,000 to 290,000 -- with 300,000 within reach.

Sources have continually said that there will not be a "race" for No. 1 and that "Yeezus" is a lock for No. 1. It will mark West's sixth chart-topper.

The album sales are epic. I'm slowly craving in into the album and I really like it. He deserves it. I hope he will continue to sell decently and reach Platinum and maybe a little more than 1m copies.

Oh I just saw a video with him and Drake. Drake basically went with him to a music store and bought all copies of Born Sinner .

                        J. Cole's Born Sinner enters at No. 2 this week with 297,000, his best sales week yet.

It's the largest debut at No. 2 since the Dec. 11, 2010, chart, when Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday bowed with 375,000.

On the other hand, Cole blew past expectations, selling about 100,000 copies more than the 150,000 to 200,000 that was forecast on June 14. Even better, its start is larger than the projection made on the day after its release on June 18, when insiders said it could do 270,000 to 290,000.

Nice to see an album staying at No. 2 for 2 (or more) weeks, haven't seen that for long... Of course a bit depressive to spend another week in the runner up position but it'll look good in the chart run and an album not peaking at No. 1 but still ending with a great total is a nice thing to see (especially if a No. 2 album manages to outsell the album that blocked it in its first week as it happened with Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday or Maroon 5's Overexposure)!

                                                    J. Cole Album Could Move to No. 1 on Billboard 200 Next Week

By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | July 03, 2013 8:23 PM EDT

It's not often that an album climbs to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, but that's just what might happen next week.

                                                    J. Cole's "Born Sinner," which debuted at No. 2 a week ago, looks like it should take the throne next Wednesday. Industry sources suggest that "Born Sinner," which spent a second week in the runner-up slot this week, may sell around 60,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on July 7.

That figure should be enough to fend off the week's new releases, which include titles by R&B singer Joe and pop/rock band Relient K, as well as the new Hillsong live album "Glorious Ruins." The biggest of those titles should be Joe's "Double Back: Evolution of R&B," with around 25,000.

The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of July 10.

The last album to climb to No. 1 -- as opposed to debuting at No. 1 -- was Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox" on the chart dated March 16. The set moved to No. 1 in its 12th chart week, after debuting at No. 2 on the Dec. 29, 2012, tally.
