                Catalog Albums/Billboard 200 Chart Update – February 15, 2020

Super Bowl? Was That Last Week?

The annual Super Bowl halftime show musical event took place on February 2 in Miami, this year featuring headliners Jennifer Lopez and Shakira with guests J Balvin, Bad Bunny and Emme Muniz. For the second straight year, no albums connected with the starring performers appeared among the next week’s top 100 sellers. To be fair, Lopez did come in at #2 Catalog, but with a lackluster #61 showing on the Billboard 200, with her 2012 hits collection Dance Again… The Hits. Shakira managed only two low-level BB200 re-entries with 2005’s Oral Fixation Vol. 2 (#166) and 2001’s Laundry Service, barely grazing the chart at #200. Last year, Maroon 5 and guest Travis Scott both managed a top 20 Catalog album only, with Maroon 5’s Songs About Jane returning #12 Catalog and #96 BB200, and Travis Scott’s Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight rising to #17 Catalog and #108 BB200 after the performance. We have to go back three years for a more significant impact (i.e. #1 Catalog, #1 Catalog Sales or top 40 BB200) from the Super Bowl performance, when Lady Gaga’s The Fame was #1 on both Catalog and Catalog Sales, and returned to #6 BB200, a best-ever performance among the top 200 albums for a post-Super Bowl bump. Also notably in 2016, for Super Bowl 50, Coldplay placed six catalog-status albums on the charts, and guest stars Beyonce and Bruno Mars between them accounted for an additional six catalog-status albums.

Yes, I understand that catalog performance after the Super Bowl depends a lot on the catalog stature of the artist in question, the age of their best albums, the presence/absence of a greatest hits album, and other factors. It does seem, however, that there is only a moderate equivalent-sales bump for the big artists involved in the performance and the actual sales effects of the spectacle are no longer very large.

On the Catalog chart, Queen’s Greatest Hits remained at #1 for a second straight week (33 overall). It wasn’t much of a battle either, as it held steady at #39 BB200 while Jennifer Lopez’ Dance Again… The Hits re-entered the BB200 at #61… The Beatle’s Abbey Road retakes the #1 sales spot among catalog albums, for the 5th time already this year and 15th in the last 18 weeks. It drops two spots to #26 on Top Album Sales, but Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 drop six spots to #29 and ends up behind the Fab Four.

                MIG’S MILESTONES
Kendrick Lamar, good kid, m.A.A.d city – #21 Cat, #106 BB200, #34 CS – The only album on our Milestone list this week reaches 300 weeks on the BB200 just in Catalog status (380 overall). It’s worth nothing that this album is second only to Bob Marley & The Wailers’ Legend for consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200 at present; it’s been on the chart for 272 straight weeks. Its run would be even longer, but it was off the BB200 on December 6, 2014… the ONLY week it’s been off the chart since its late 2012 debut.

                NEW ON THE CHARTS
The only outright debuts for February 15 were all Super Bowl related: Jennifer Lopez’ Dance Again… The Hits (#2 Cat, #61 BB200), and Shakira’s Oral Fixation Vol. 2 (#166 BB200) and Laundry Service (#200 BB200). Lopez had been on the Catalog chart only once previously, with 2001’s J. Lo; that album reached #35 Catalog and spent six weeks on the chart in 2003. Shakira also has a short Catalog history, with 1998’s Donde Estan Los Ladrones? being her only charting album. It reached #30 in a two-week run in 2000.

WANDERING STARS – Reserved for long-absent albums returning to the charts (NOTE: will only include albums that have been absent for a year or more for the first three months of 2020):
Lil Wayne, Tha Carter III – #37 Cat, #135 BB200 – First week on the Catalog chart since 2018. Three weeks ago, it returned to the BB200 for the first time since 2018.
Eight other albums, including three albums from Taylor Swift (1989, reputation, Red) return to one or more of the Catalog-related charts for the first time in 2020.

CATALOG NOTES – Parenthetical numbers are weeks in the top 10 followed by 2020 weeks in the top 10:
On Catalog Sales (CS): Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged In New York retakes a spot in the top 10 with a 16-10 jump, its 10th overall top 10 week and first of 2020. It displaces Michael Jackson’s Thriller (106/4)… Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black has the largest ranking increase in sales among Catalog albums on the Top Album Sales chart, rising from #24 to #14. It is outpaced, however, by the re-entry of My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade at #12 ranking… Five of this week’s top 10 have been in the top 10 all year so far… The longest run among five catalog albums that leave the sales chart belonged to Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2, at eight weeks.
On Catalog/BB200: Jennifer Lopez’ Dance Again… The Hits, a new entry at #2, is accompanied into the top 10 by two returning entries from Taylor Swift. 1989, a former catalog #1, jumps 31-4 for its 30th overall top 10 week, and reputation returns to the chart at #7 for its 2nd top 10 week and best position to date. Both albums are in the top 10 for the first time in 2020… Also returning to the top 10 at #8, for its second top 10 week of 2020 (and #876 overall) is Bob Marley & The Wailers’ LegendThe Beatles’ 1 ends a five week run in the top 10. Also leaving the top 10 are Drake’s Take Care, J. Cole’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive, and Eminem’s Curtain Call: The Hits, leaving the chart from #5… The Beatles’ Abbey Road jumps 18-11 for the best upward move on the chart this week… Five week runs for Ed Sheeran’s x and Elvis Presley’s The Essential Elvis Presley are the longest Catalog chart runs that end this week. On the BB200, the longest terminating run for a catalog album is also just five weeks, for Maroon 5’s Red Pill Blues.

TOP CATALOG ALBUMS WITH NO TOP 10 WEEKS IN 2020 / NO TOP 10 WEEKS EVER – Numbers in parentheses are overall chart weeks, overall top 10 weeks, weeks on chart in 2020, overall peak position, 2020 peak position, current position. If the top album with no 2020 top 10 weeks is the same as the album with no top 10 weeks overall, only one is shown:
Catalog Sales: My Chemical Romance, The Black Parade (32/4/2/#1/#12/#12)
                Taylor Swift, reputation (2/0/1/#19/#19/#19)
                Catalog: Fleetwood Mac, Rumours (297/49/7/#1/#11/#14)
                Soundtrack, Moana (8/0/6/#11/#11/#15)

I came across this Tweet by AJJ https://twitter.com/ajjtheband/statu...66229559300098
And it got me a bit confused, I presume the 'New artists albums' charts are charts not everyone gets to see.
But I know for a fact that AJJ never hit the Folk/Americana Albums Chart that Billboard publishes, and certainly not at #2.

And then, looking through their history, I noticed that 'Good Luck Everybody' performed way better on Top Current Albums and Top Album Sales than their previous effort 'The Bible 2', but it made no other charts whereas Bible 2 made 5 additional charts.

                  https://www.billboard.com/charts/sea...e=&chart_date=
                  https://www.billboard.com/charts/sea...e=&chart_date=

So I am wondering how their new album managed to chart on so few charts, not even on heatseekers or independent albums, while their previous album did charts on those with worse performance on top album sales. And why would they claim a '#2 Americana / Folk album' when their album doesn't seem to appear on that chart at all?
