        • While not quite as apocalyptic as they were predicting, turns out Sensus weren't so wrong when they sang of a world disaster happening in the year 2020! Some quite nice stuff among these. Interesting to hear more of Laid Back; I remember 'Bakerman' getting some airplay in Britain back in '90 and quite liking it, though it only managed I think No 44. But never heard any of their earlier singles. 'Sunshine Reggae' is irrepressibly naff in my view, though 'High Society Girl' has a more of-its-time feel. The vid with kids smoking and wearing make-up etc is slightly off-putting though and wouldn't pass muster by today's standards!

'White Horse' was played numerous times in the nightclubs I used to frequent around 1983/1984. I remember being surprised when it was a US top 40 hit.

              • A rare (to say the least) sight in the charts - a royalty. The most successful music venture by the enfant terrible of European nobility, that made lasting impression on, among others, Pet Shop Boys and Dieter Bohlen. She had several more tries but couldn't get near replicating her initial success.

                • Never knew the Princess had ventured into music! Passed me by at that the time despite a close brush with our charts. I think it was right that she didn't delve further though and returned to royal duties and looking refined soon thereafter.

Going through some odd random old compilations and I am reminded of this lot below. First up are Red Flag, who I liked as they were sort-of sub-Depeche Mode with overtones of Alphaville, or something Germanic-sounding anyway. Having Wiki'd them I don't think they ever managed a significant mainstream hit anywhere, though they enjoyed a few Billboard Club Play chart hits. Despite a complete lack of commercial success since, and the suicide of one of its members, the band is apparently still 'a thing'! There were a few suitably obscure (sorry; lesser-known!) songs to choose from, but if only in recognition of how PassingStrang seems to have discovered a lot of his eighties music, albeit belatedly, that he's shared with us on this forum over the years, this tune seemed the most apt:

                  RUSSIAN RADIO - RED FLAG
                  Origin: USA
                  Year: 1988

Sorry being a dimwit with computers I still haven't managed to work out how to embed links visually like the ones above: https://youtu.be/ZKCuoRhROjE

Another great band who never quite made it were Cause And Effect. Also American and again quite Depeche-influenced, but in their case with a New Order twist. Technically this mightn't qualify as the single wasn't released until 1990, and apparently not a hit in its native country for another two years (No 38), but I'm one of those pedants who knows real decades start with the year ending in '1' and end with '0', so I'm hoping I'll get away with it. Also, it just sounds SO 1988-'89! According to Wiki they only finally called it a day officially in April this year.

YOU THINK YOU KNOW HER - CAUSE AND EFFECT
                  Origin: USA
                  Year: 1990

Last but not least, also from the surprisingly fertile US scene at the end of the decade, there is this simple but rather jolly ditty, which was also a Dance chart hit but crossed over sufficiently on belated 7" release in 1990 to make 65 on the Hot 100. Reminiscent of Kon Kan's one-hit wonder 'I Beg Your Pardon' in production to my ears and very much of its day. I've provided a link but couldn't find an actual video to accompany the original mix. Never mind; you'll get the idea aurally anyway.

                            • Surprised I'd never heard of Endgames as I like my Scottish early '80s bands and I should've known what happened to Brian McGee after he left Simple Minds. Now I do. Not much apparently, at least with his first new venture. Initially I was really keen, but the chorus didn't seem to quite match the promise of the verses; it almost felt like two songs spliced together with the first being upbeat new wave and the second a stodgy Motown-esque affair.

'My Soul Unwraps Tonight' is pretty poor. Monotonous forgettable chorus line and seemingly an attempt too far to try and be 'arty'. Not surprised it tanked in its home country although my mind is boggled at its relative success across the three German-speaking countries of Europe! We all have our moments I suppose.

                              • I quite enjoyed 'My Soul Unwraps Tonight' though it did get a bit repetitive after while. I like the bass and production. According to wikipedia the drummer was in an early (1978-79), pre-fame, Thompson Twins line-up.

It was an interesting sound for the times and the song going Top 5 in North America should've rubbed off in some way. In fact the whole parent album "Reach the Beach" is great and very much recommended.

                                            • The Flirts was a musical project assembled by Hi-NRG pioneer Bobby "O" Orlando. In 1983 Neil Tennant, then an assistant editor at UK pop magazine Smash Hits, got in touch with Orlando while he was in New York. They became good friends and when tennant and Chris Lowe formed the Pet Shop Boys, Tennant asked Orlando to produce their first recordings including early versions of tracks such as 'West End Girls', It's A Sin' and 'Opportunities'. The song that attracted Tennat to Orlando's work was 'Passion', one of the tracks posted above.
