An interesting attempt of putting the ye-ye influenced vocal on a synthpop-based instrumental which actually sounds like something that an indie pop singer could have released now.

It was really big in the Eastern Europe as well, achieving almost a "timeless classic" status (still getting radio airplay).

It was quite weird to choose Spanish as the language, especially for an Italian band.

Not sure if this can be considered an obscure one (in the English-speaking countries probably), this is an Italo disco classic.

Despite its ostensibly innocuous beach theme, the song actually talks about the explosion of an atomic bomb.

that is why I used "apparently", it's on the single's wiki page (and I wasn't too bothered to check)

I remember the video for 'Africa' by Rose Laurens being featured on the UK chart show Top Of The Pops in 1983. In 1983 the programme would occasionally feature the Euro top 20 and play one or two videos of songs in the chart. The track was featured on the edition broadcast on 1 September 1983

American band Styx had many chart hits in their home country. However, 'Boat on the River', a song that didn't chart in the US, became their biggest hit in the 3 German-speaking countries in 1980.

In terms of popularity yes, but I followed the "more obscure tracks" tagline and critical reception.)
Also Franco Battiato & Alice ESC-1984 entry ("I Treni Di Tozeur") was a minor hit in the Netherlands (#15) and Belgum (#30), not exactly obscure...but quite new wave-ish

Quite a sophisticated pop song (you can see the English subs in the video) by none other than Franco Battiato.
P.S. Franco's own 1981 song "Centro di gravitą permanente" managed to enter Spanish iTunes charts in 2020 at #77 on the back of the inclusion in La Casa De Papel OST
