          Catalog Albums/Billboard 200 Chart Update – February 29, 2020

On It Goes for Queen, Beatles

Queen’s Greatest Hits once again tops the Catalog chart, running to 4 straight and 35 weeks total, good for seventh place all time as it breaks a tie with Michael Buble’s Christmas. Eminem’s Curtain Call: The Hits places #2 Catalog again, but once again the gap between #1 and #2 on the BB200 is large (#31 vs. #60).

The Beatles’ Abbey Road runs to three straight weeks at #1 in catalog sales, which it has been for 17 of the last 21 weeks. Queen’s Greatest Hits moves to #2 behind it, with both albums sinking a bit on Top Album Sales, Abbey Road dropping three spots to #24 and Greatest Hits falling five spots to #28.

          MIG’S MILESTONES
Lana Del Rey, Born To Die – #43 Cat, #144 BB200, #10 CS – This album’s low perch on the Catalog chart is still good for week #100 overall, album #180 to make that benchmark, and the second of this year following Josh Groban’s Noel.
          Taylor Swift, 1989 – #17 Cat, #103 BB200 – Gets its 150th week on the Catalog chart.

          NEW ON THE CHARTS
No brand new chart entries this week.

WANDERING STARS – Reserved for long-absent albums returning to the charts (NOTE: will only include albums that have been absent for a year or more for the first three months of 2020):
Rage Against The Machine, Rage Against The Machine – #189 BB200, #33 CS – Returns to the Catalog Sales tally for the first time since 2017 and to the BB200 for the first time since 2013. It spent 89 weeks on the BB200 in its initial run, though it got no higher than #45, and is up to 95 weeks on the chart now.
David Gray, White Ladder – #11 CS – First catalog sales appearance since its original catalog run of 20 weeks in 2002. It reached #12 in that original run, and tops that peak by one position. This 2000 release, Gray’s only catalog entry, spent 83 weeks on the BB200 and reached #35.

CATALOG NOTES – Parenthetical numbers are weeks in the top 10 followed by 2020 weeks in the top 10:
On Catalog Sales (CS): Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band’s Greatest Hits (476/6) drops from the top 10 after six weeks in. It’s replaced in the top 10 by Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged In New York (11/2), reaching a new 2020 high of #9… Metallica’s Ride The Lightning is one of two catalog albums to fall from the Top Album Sales chart and, at five weeks on, has the longest current run for a catalog album that comes to an end this week.
On Catalog/BB200: Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours (50/1) is the week’s only top 10 re-entry, climbing 13-10 for its first top 10 week of the year and 50th overall. The album it replaces, the Frozen soundtrack, drops 8-13 to leave the top 10 after spending seven straight weeks there… At #11, The Weeknd’s Starboy reaches a new high position… Five Finger Death Punch’s A Decade Of Destruction and Bryson Tiller’s T R A P S O U L leave the Catalog chart after running for six weeks each… The longest active BB200 run for a catalog chart ending this week is Lil Wayne’s The Carter III, at just five weeks.

TOP CATALOG ALBUMS WITH NO TOP 10 WEEKS IN 2020 / NO TOP 10 WEEKS EVER – Numbers in parentheses are overall chart weeks, overall top 10 weeks, weeks on chart in 2020, overall peak position, 2020 peak position, current position. If the top album with no 2020 top 10 weeks is the same as the album with no top 10 weeks overall, only one is shown:
Catalog Sales: David Gray, White Ladder (21/0/1/#11/#11/#11)
          Catalog: The Weeknd, Starboy (25/0/8/#11/#11/#11)

Top 10 Country Albums Chart in Pure Sales: February 24, 2020
Posted By Matt Bjorke on Tuesday February 25, 2020

It was a photo finish of sorts on this week's chart but (the pictured) Brantley Gilbert takes the top spot from BMLG label mate Carly Pearce. See how close the race for the most sales, this week, was.

Thanks to what was most-likely a concert ticket bundle redemption, Brantley Gilbert's Fire & Brimstone jumps Carly Pearce's self-titled sophomore album release by 100 units to claim this week's #1 slot. Pearce, who has a Top 10 hit with "I Hope You're Happy Now" with Lee Brice from the project, also debuts at #73 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and thanks to sales + streaming figures, her total impact for release week is over 77,000 album equivalents so far. Luke Combs' What You See Is What You Get sits at #3 on this chart (#1 on the S+S total impact chart) and is followed by Blake Shelton's Fully Loaded: God's Country album on this chart. Jason Aldean's 9 rounds out the Top 5.

The juggernaut album that seemingly won't go away, Chris Stapleton's Traveller sits at #6 and is followed by one word titled albums in Nightfall and Wildcard from Little Big Town and Miranda Lambert, respectively. Sitting at #9 this week is Luke Combs' debut album This One's For You. Rounding out the Top 10 is Tyler Childers with Country Squire.

Our long list of notables includes Sturgille Simpson, Ronnie Dunn, Lady Antebellum, Jon Pardi, Tanya Tucker, The Steeldrivers, Niko Moon, Alan Doyle, Thomas Rhett, Carrie Underwood, Sheryl Crow and many more.

With BTS expecting to smash it next week, I wonder if Billboard will sometime split the World Albums (and Digital Single Sales) charts. I know they're not the most important charts. But K-Pop is now so popular that I'd say they 'deserve' their own chart alongside the likes of Reggae and New Age, which in turn would give a little more room to the other 'world' Albums.

I never said K-Pop is a genre, nor will I get into that. But it definitely is a part of World Music (which is not a genre either) that dominates it's charts to such an extend that I think the current charts work for neither showcasing music from (or influenced by) different parts of the world (as most of the charts are Korean), nor for the current popularity of K-Pop, whether you think it's a genre, a scene or just World Music with origins in one specific region. Currently World Music Albums and Digital Song Sales are 15 and 25 spots deep respectively, on both only a handful of entries seem to be not Korean.

As far as BB recognizing K-Pop, they did compile a 'Korea K-Pop Hot 100' for a few years, but it seems like they stopped that a few weeks ago.
