      • oh, yes, even MRIB were slow on adding The Cult. The album release must have made them add it. But they have grebo rockers Crazyhead in the chart (full title What Gives You The Idea That You're So Amazing, Baby?). The suits that compile the Kerrang! charts would have no idea who Crazyhead were! The previous weeks refer to the music industry chart used by Channel Four's The Chart Show but not previously made available in full to the public. The Chart Show would eventually make their own specialist charts.

Both charts are dated 4th April? Did Kerrang! go weekly at this point?

EDIT: they've ignored the Beastie Boys but that version of Whole Lotta Love is actually a hip hop track! It's like they added it without even listening to it!

        • Don't remember that version of Whole Lotta Love at all - probably shouldn't be in the chart but personally I wouldn't include the Beasties either - it's all so subjective....

Kerrang! is fortnightly until later in the year - I'm still using the date of the equivalent chart in Sounds.

But you went from 28th March to 4th April. That's why i asked.

On the basis of the amount of rock on that album, i wouldn't have included Beastie Boys either. I think people got the wrong idea from the way they were marketed. They did start as punk rock, though.

Stand by for the debut of Cher as a "metal" act soon on the MRIB chart - only for that to disappear with The Shoop Shoop Song in 91.
Michael Bolton would be included, too - much to the confusion of people who didn't know his background. Frankly, they should not have included any of his subsequent material.

            • Oh No - you're right - that should be the chart for 11 April.

              How did that happen?!?

              Now corrected!

                            • I'm not sure which version of the chart I prefer or which should be seen as the more authorative. By this point in 1987 I was barely following the main Gallup chart and had long since stopped buying Record Mirror. Unless a record was in the charts and on the video jukebox in the local or was getting played on Capital FM or the London pirate radio stations I probably never got to hear it. Rock records beyond those that made the Gallup top 40 were largely unknown to me by this point. The Kerrang chart still attracts the more poppy rock hits but the chart no longer feels representative of a genre. It's more like the pop charts with dance and indie music taken out. Is the MRIB chart more representative? I only really got to notice rock music again in late 1988 to1989 by which point Guns N Roses were dominant and the likes of Metallica and Megadeath were having big hits.

                              • I think they were Iron Maiden, the first heavy metal rockers, who made a breakthrough into pop charts in 1988 with Seventh Son of a Seventh Son album and singles like Can I Play With Madness and The Evil That Men Do, both reaching Top 5.
I'm looking for "TOP POPS/MUSIC NOW" and "MERSEYBEAT / MUSIC ECHO" Charts to complete my 60's singles charts collection.

Is that really a fair assessment? It does not include U2, Chris Rea, The Cure, Simple Minds or Broken English, who are all in the top 40 on the Pop chart. Let alone all of the non-Rock Pop that occupies the top 40. It is not a pure Hard Rock/Heavy Metal chart by any means, but I think that the chart still has a lot of merit if you are interested in Rock music beyond what appeared on the Pop chart.

That's a fair comment especially as I forgot about U2!

Black Sabbath were the first heavy metal band (1970). (Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin were around the same era but are more hard rock than metal). Hence the term New Wave of British Heavy Metal for the late 70s. I'm pretty sure there were bands before Maiden in this movement, too.
Maiden did have a bigger boost in 88 but they'd already had a big top ten hit with Run To The Hills.

EDIT: i think i get what you mean. Sabbath and co were not called heavy metal when they came out, the term came later. Although Motorhead preceded/influenced and are seen by some as being part of the NWOBHM, Maiden seem to be regarded as the first actual group or notable group of that movement/scene.

                                      --------------------------------------------------------

Megadeth didn't have a big UK hit until their cover of Alice Cooper in 1990. Anthrax were bigger on the singles chart before that.
88 was Maiden and Jovi. G N R struggled until the remix of Sweet Child in 89.

It's obvious that the MRIB chart is more representative as The Chart Show used it for television. And Kerrang! then reverted back to actual hard rock and metal later. Kerrang! magazine itself would not be having Phil Collins and Chris Rea in their interviews or live reviews so why are they in their charts? If you can show me evidence that they did....

Actually Kerrang! did sometimes run interviews with/reviews of artists like these.

The issue with the latest charts has a lengthy (and generally favourable) review of Genesis at Wembley Stadium.

".....this band has changed almost beyond recognition, yet still puts on one of the most entertaining live acts in rock today."

well they never did when i read it in the nineties. Genuinely shocked that they would seem to have a justification that your average metalhead (or even prog fan) would still be interested in them by then. Having said that, they have gushing features on Pvris and Twenty One Pilots these days - who are barely even rock.

Oh no no no, you got me wrong ) I was talking purely about the late '80s. Perhaps Maiden wasn't the first heavy metal band that conquested the pop charts. However, their audience expanded far beyond the group of ardent fans of the genre by the end of the decade. It's not only music but also their videos that entertained a wide range of the public but, first of all, the teens.

Bon Jovi shouldn't be classified as rock to my taste, as well as Bryan Adams. Though I know many people would disagree with me.

                                            • I don't think Maiden did expand their appeal much beyond their fanbase, in the late 80's and their tracks certainly never crossed over into the mainstream. None of the tracks from 7th Son stuck around the charts for any longer than their earlier singles did, yes they charted higher but still spent a similar amount of weeks on chart. I'd say their only track that appealed much beyond their fan base was 1982s Run To The Hills.

While they had always released a plethora of different limited editions of their singles (Pic Discs, Poster Sleeves, Gatefolds etc) I think they just started staggering the releases on 7th Son, so they would get a 2nd or 3rd week Top 10. Like 3 editions on release, then say a Pic Disc wk 2 and then Poster Sleeve wk 3.

I'd say acts like Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams were/are definitely rock acts, certainly not Hard Rock let alone Heavy Metal but definitely (soft) rock.

                                                • That song by Briar - not the same as the one by Vixen - made UK #95 the following week. Also entered MRIB chart at 8 that week. Though the archive for that issue of Number 1 is missing. https://michaelmouse1967.wixsite.com...e---number-one

Yup, it's a naff song though.

The Vixen hit of the same name is much better (though I guess they must have nicked the title....)
