I've just listened to Pie Taster by The Macc Lads again, on the back of talking about it and them yesterday.

Deary me! I'd actually forgotten just how brutal their lyrics were!! They're like a Hard Rock, Roy Chubby Brown!

I went to a wedding in Leeds in 1995 where the evening bash was sountracked not only by records by The Clash, Specials, Madness, Blondie and other great 70s and 80s bands but also by the Macc Lads too! It was quite a bizarre sight to see people on the dance floor singing and dancing along to them. It's possibly the first time I'd heard anything by the band.

A few of my mates, were bang into them. They had their albums, used to go see them live and had an annoying habit of singing their lyrics amongst each other in public. "Sweaty Betty" seemed to be a particular favourite of theirs to recite!

I wonder if folk in the South were that into them, they always struck me as having quite a Northern and Scottish following.

'The Flame' by Cheap Trick was a US number 1. Quite an achievement for a band who had been struggling for years with a number of flop releases.

I'm surprised "The Flame" did so well ( also No.1 in Australia) because it's an utterly generic power ballad with (to my ears) rather naff lyrics.

It was written for, but turned down by, Elkie Brooks.

According to the Billboard Book of No.1 hits the band all hated the demo (from British songwriters Bob Mitchell and Nick Graham) and had to be persuaded to record the track by producer Richie Zito.

"Heaven Tonight" features the distinctive vocals of Joe Lynn Turner, so inevitably sounds like early 80s Rainbow.
