  • I liked the stuff they done with Uli Jon Roth in the band, just prior to Lovedrive, although I can't say they have ever been a real favourite of mine, it's probably the period I like the most by them

      • Got my 12" copy of #5, signed by the band, after they played The Venue in Edinburgh, back in 89 (I think). I was never particularly into them, only showed an interest because ex Whitesnake bassist, Neil Murray, was part of their line up at the time and whose work in Whitesnake, I loved and still do. I vaguely remember them being pretty good musically but the singers voice doing my nut in.

The cover, I think is a bit weird sounding in places, but kind of works in others.

The chart is still looking mighty stale, in my opinion. That little burst of popularity for Hard Rock/Heavy Metal etc in the late 80s, when it managed to become reasonably mainstream, was well and truly over in the UK, by 1989. They say Grunge killed all that Hair/Glam Metal etc but in the UK, it was all to do with dance music, Madchester, the drug culture, a changing sensibility and it just never being that popular a musical genre.

Unlike the US, where they seemed to go Hard/Soft Rock, Heavy/Hair/Glam Metal etc crazy, for a good few years, it just didn't crossover to the same regard, in the UK. I'd say it only really touched upon consistent, mainstream popularity, between 87 and 88.

        • Listening to it again, I quite like the Vow Wow cover of Helter Skelter although it didn't make much impression on me at the time....

More than half a century on The Beatles' original still sounds extraordinary - a genuine hard rock/metal track that's totally unlike anything else they ever recorded (as far as I'm aware...)

              • Mean Man, I think is a great wee track, probably my 2nd favourite from them, after Animal (**** Like A Beast). Caught them live this year (1989), touring Mean Mans parent album The Headless Chicken. They were a pretty decent live band, although they'd unfortunately ditched all the naked ladies, blood and over the top theatrics by this point. Sadly, this was as far as I went with WASP, by the time they came round again in 1992, with the Crimson Idol, I really wasn't as bang into Heavy Metal/Hard Rock as I used to be and paid almost no attention, to a lot of acts, that only a couple of years earlier, I was quite into.

Love Cinderellas Don't What You've Got ('til It's Gone), hard to choose between this and Gypsy Road, as my favourite track by them.

Always had a lot of time for Little Angels and really liked their later 92/93 album Jam. Seen them on a bill supporting Bryan Adams, along with Squeeze and Extreme at Celtic Park in 91 or 92 and they were great. As much as I love Squeeze, they definitely seemed out of place on a bill that was pretty much straight out rock and hard rock.

Mammoth, they were those big fat guys, with shaved heads and goatee beards, weren't they!? Or have I just weirdly imagined they were.

Agree on W.A.S.P. - strong single. I'd say "Headless Children" was their most consistent album too, albeit more mainstream than their earlier output!

Yes re Mammoth....Blondini posted a video of theirs a few pages earlier.....

Just checked out the Angry Anderson single as I didn't remember it. Surprisingly poppy and commercial - guess the Neighbours fans didn't go for it though...

                  • Ha ha, yes Headless Children. I've been doing that for around 30 years now, it just seems to have slipped into my head, as The Headless Chicken!

Did you go beyond HC with them? I remember one of my mates at University, who was also into Metal etc and upon us both discovering we liked WASP, telling me that (I think it was) The Crimson Idol album, was actually a pretty good album but I never did give it a listen, HC is the last latest thing I've listened to by them.

                    • I thought The Crimson Idol was okay but a tad disappointing - I didn't really go for the hackneyed Rise-and-Fall-of-a-Rock-Star concept.

Haven't listened to it for a long time now but I've got the special edition CD somewhere - I'll have to dig it out and give it a spin......

                      • Cool, might give it a listen myself, plenty time in my hands at the minute.

Aye, I vaguely remember that alter ego/concept album shit by him. I'm sure I just shook my head in disbelief, that Blackie had come to this.

                                      • Finally The Dogs D'Amour

The Chart Show Rock Chart (8th April 1989)

Wrathchild as high as 6 here. The Cult at #2 with Fire Woman. Kerrang! should have it in their chart.

                                        • 'Fire Woman' should definitely be in the Kerrang! chart. It's a straightforward rock song.

Agree - can't see why The Cult aren't included.

Kerrang! had just given the "Sonic Temple" album a rave four star review too!

One of my then flatmate's had the album and it must have been played dozens of times! I remember it being a great album though I've not heard it since 1989.

                                              • Their best album in my opinion, used to have it on CD, but I think my mum nicked it years ago, well just never gave me it back!

                                                  • It's actually quite surprising that Black Sabbath are so revered in this day and age, considering the (IMO) absolute garbage they, well Iommi and various hired hands, released in the 80s and 90s and the damage they (he) done to the name. I remember 80s/90s Black Sabbath, as a sad shadow of what they once were and just a ragtag band, who nobody really had much time for or interest in.

I actually had the Headless Cross on 7", another bargain bin, pretty sure I listened to it once, upon getting it home and saw the video once on the chart show and that was it. Saying that, I have absolutely no recollection of what it sounds like, just that the guy singing in the video had a receding ponytail, a beard and I think was called Cat Martin, Tony Martin something like that.

...just watched it on Youtube. Pretty forgettable track, just sounds overly loud, with no real hook and I do remember now, that I never particularly liked Tony "Cat" Martins voice and still don't, think his delivery also sounds a bit too Dioesque. Oh and he didn't have a ponytail but was receding!
