Slade just couldn't quite get the Christmas number 1, either on the Rock charts or the national Gallup charts!

Several great new entries this chart...

Ozzy thankfully boots that dreary Quo single off the top...

Quiet Riot's stonking cover of Slade's Cum On Feel the Noize enters just below The Boyz themselves...

Meanwhile Blue Oyster Cult's alien abduction single was co-written by Aldo Nova (himself a new entry at 17).

The Brian May new entry was a weird one - a cover of the theme from a Japanese s.f. puppet show that use to air on Saturday morning tv in the early 80s. Brian's "friends" on the track included Eddie Van Halen.

    Agree!

Brilliantly evocative track (even if nobody can agree what the title means!)

It brings back that long, hot summer of '83 every time I hear it......happier times.

I love 'Big Log', it brings back good memories of listening to the radio while soaking up the sun in the hot summer of 1983. I was at university in 1983 so spent much of the long summer break lounging in the sun while living on Supplementary Benefit which as a student meant just turning up at the unemployment benefit office once a fortnight and signing on. If only life could still be as easy and carefree...

How could I have forgotten Pat Campbell's The Deal, only #31 back in '69 but a kitsch classic.

As Oscar Wilde said, you'd need a heart of stone not to laugh...

I think that one's too ambiguous to count...

There are plenty of hits where the narrator is facing imminent death (Green, Green Grass of Home; Seasons in the Sun; I've Gotta Get a Message to You, I Did What I Did For Maria, etc etc) but I can't think of any more where he explicitly dies before the song concludes!

I'm sure there are others though....

Very morbid but very interesting! Would you consider 'Dancing With Tears In My Eyes' by Ultravox to be a song where the narrator dies at the end? The lyrics are open to interpretation though the video suggests the song is about imminent death in the aftermath of a nuclear power plant disaster. On the other hand the song could be about the end (death) of a romance.

    A random, morbid thought...

Is Iron Maiden's The Trooper (#12 in '83, #5 in '05) the most successful hit single in which the narrator "dies" at the end?

Other examples that spring to mind are Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell (#8 in '93), Down in the Tube Station at Midnight by The Jam (#15 in '78) and Maiden's own Hallowed Be Thy Name (#9 in '93).

Geddes Axe brings back long forgotten memories of it being part of what I was taught in O Level History!

NWOBHM band Geddes Axe took their punning name from Rush vocalist/bass guitarist Geddy Lee, as well as the post World War One economy/austerity drive!

Second successive chart topper from Twisted Sister...

The Uriah Heep hit was a cover of a Bryan Adams song.

Speaking of Heep, former main-man Ken Hensley co-wrote Blackfoot's impressive new entry Send Me An Angel (not the well known Real Life song from the same year).
