Weirdly still no sign of either Dare or Swervedriver.

Richie Sambora's Ballad Of Youth at 10 (and played)
7 is Motley Crue's Primal Scream (also played) - both of these ignored by Kerrang!
Dare are at No.6 - blink and miss 'em!

Sambora and Crue enter rather belatedly in the next K issue...

              • ITV Chart Show Rock Chart (21st September 1991)

Enter Sandman still top ten here (compared to Kerrang!'s #23).
Nine Inch Nails played on Saturday lunchtime telly! What an amazing moment this was!

                              • Baby Animals did make the UK 100 but i can't recall the position. 90 ish i think. Looks like it might be a new entry here from outside the top 40 last week.

Missing from the recent chart(s): Manic Street Preachers, Slade, Tin Machine https://www.officialcharts.com/chart...19911103/7501/
Catherine Wheel - Black Metallic (not the mess that OCC has credited it as) https://www.officialcharts.com/chart...19911117/7501/

In actual proper UK chart terms, Nirvana actually went straight in at the top, knocking off Bryan Adams after a 22 week run!

                                • I've got positions 76-200 for the UK charts for this week in 1991 (30/11/91). 'Early Warning' by Baby Animals is at #102, down from #84. Neither 'Sin' by Nine Inch Nails or 'Touch You' by Mind Funk are in there. 'Head Like A Hole' by NIN is there though, at #161, down from #125. The above mentioned 'Black Metallic' by Catherine Wheel is down to #99.

wow - Sin fell off the 200 after 2 weeks? Might have been limited edition - there was a 9 inch single of it that i used to have. I regret selling it when i was skint. Great cover of Queen's Get Down Make Love on it, which was added to a reissue of Pretty Hate Machine in 2010.

I didn't realise it has been a top 75 hit. I notice its chart run was 35-47. On week 3 it was most likely removed from the charts under the then exclusion rule which applied to records below number 75:

                                        3: Exclusions

                                        3.1 Singles Chart: Positions 76-200
A single which, in the normal course of events, would appear between positions 76 and 200 of the combined Singles Chart is excluded if its sales have fallen for two or more consecutive weeks AND have fallen by more than 20% in the past week. Once excluded in this way, a record will only re-appear in the chart if its sales increase. Records excluded by this rule are shown on the printed chart report with their sales index and asterisks (***) in place of a chart position.

The above chart rule (the original "starred out" rule) was in place from 8 January 1983 (when Gallup took over chart compilation duties) until 16 April 2005 (the last singles chart to be compiled based purely on physical sales)

                                        • ^ i figured that is what had happened to it in the top 100. But i didn't know they excluded them from the top 200 as well! (i think i did see this mentioned once, actually but i forgot it applied to the whole top 200)

So when Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit mysteriously dropped from 32 out of the top 75 did that actually drop completely off the top 200??

Sadly i can't find any ITV Chart Show rock charts for December 91. I suspect this might be Nirvana's label getting any uploads removed. I did a "Chart Show Nirvana" search and got nothing from the years 91 to 93.

So when Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit mysteriously dropped from 32 out of the top 75 did that actually drop completely off the top 200??
I only have 2 top 200 charts from 1991 / 1992, one from 30/11/91 and the other from 16/05/92. For Nirvana, it depends by how much its sales fell when it dropped from number 32. If by 20+% then it would have just vanished from the top 200.

The 16/05/92 chart has an interesting entry at number 181 - 'Dreams' by Gabrielle. I'm assuming this must be the original version with the 'Fast Car' sample. The catalogue number of the single is Victim VIC33. Also in the same chart is the original version of 'Searching' by China Black on Big One Records (#142).

                                            • i think i did see that top 100 on display in a store and Teen Spirit did drop out of the top 100. All this time i've held on to the notion that it dropped to 101.

There's been no explanation as to why it suddenly vanished and had such a huge drop in sales. Nevermnd did climb up to the top ten region at this point and the focus was on that at the end of the year but it still looks strange. It's not like the Boyzone single that was purposely excluded when it had been at a similar position because of a b-side that was also on the next single that the label wanted to release.

So a #200 "hit" in those days was in reality probably about 200 places lower! Imagine being an artist being told the news.

                                              • The chart where 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' vanished from the top 75 from #32 is the one where there were 33 new entries. The single was probably forced out by the sheer weight of new entries that week

                                                https://www.officialcharts.com/chart...19920105/7501/

The only other single that week to fall off the chart from inside the top 40 was 'I'll Be Home This Christmas' by Shakin' Stevens. After Christmas had passed it wasn't a suprise to see the latter vanish but it is puzzling about the Nirvana single.

                                                • In this case it may still be within the Top 200. Whilst Robbie is right, ChartsPlus (not the current version, but one that ran from mid 1991 to late 1994) printed a Top 200, which seems to be uncompressed. Thats the source of the 2 Top 200's Robbie has. My understanding is that the ChartsPlus team re-numbered the chart. Hit Music certainly did. For example, on 23 Dec 1995 Listen Me Tic (Woyoi) by Ini Kamoze was at 138 (new entry) on the Compressed Singles 200. I have this from work on the new version of ChartsPlus. Hit Music printed this entry at 197. Numbers 198-200 where not in the Compressed chart (all fallers). So that gives you some idea of the scale of entries that would make the non compressed chart.

For comparison on 23 Dec 1995

                                                  Compressed
                                                  110 falling, 17 climbing, 7 non-movers, 33 New and 33 RE.

                                                  Not compressed
                                                  137 falling, 29 climbing, 5 non-movers, 25 New and 4 RE.

The top 200 charts published in the original chartsPlus were probably the official (i.e with exclusions) charts due to the fact there are so many records re-entering the chart suggesting they were doing so as a result of recording a sales increase after having previously been excluded. From what I can see, Hit Music only published the uncompressed version of the top 200 from February 1994, when Millward Brown took over chart compilation duties. Indeed, during the Gallup era Hit Music only published a top 100 and numbers 76 to 100 during this period would appear to be compiled using the exclusion rule. From a quick observation, so few records with 3+ weeks on the chart drop into the 76-100 part of the chart during that period that it suggests the exclusion rule was in place.
