    • I bought that Weird Al single. Slightly surprised to see it included.

i mean he's not a metal artist so he wouldn't ordinarily be included

i think the record is entirely self-made, it's not even a band!

          • Oh I agree - I said ‘in a way’ as I’m sort of 50/50 on yes it would be, why not and oh no it shouldn’t have been

            • I think it made The Chart Show rock chart but i can't check as there are no videos from this period available.

              • Interesting that they have excluded Fish (who charted here: https://www.officialcharts.com/chart...19920628/7501/) but included Marillion. Eventually both would be removed from some rock charts but Fish was still included on The Chart Show rock chart as late as 1994: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEAB19lo1pU - he looks very incongruous next to Nine Inch Nails!

Not also that Richard Marx is no longer considered hard rock. And the compilers are late including Sonic Youth. https://www.officialcharts.com/chart...19920719/7501/

It's a pretty affectionate parody. Would it have sold to anyone who wasn't a fan of the original? Nope....

                          • Great list. I've got well over half of those tracks, on album, single or at least had (for some of them) on an old copied tape.

Looking forward to the albums, reckon I'll have a fair few of those as well.

Freebird shouldn't be on that list.
Why not? It's always been regarded as a classic.

It seems i'm mistaken but i never thought the band qualified as metal or hard rock but it seems they do qualify as the latter.
If you ran the poll again now, i don't think it would be as high.

                                  • I'd agree 'Freebird' is straight ahead rock rather than metal but that would apply to several other tracks on the list too!

It was always the go-to last track of the evening for every rock disco I ever remember attending back in the day....

                                    • 'Freebird' was certified Platinum last week, for 600,000 sales. In addition the 'Free Bird' EP sold around 300,000 copies from its release in 1976 to the mid 1980s, a massive amount back then for a record that only peaked at number 21. It did so in three chart runs, the original in 1976 (when 'Freebird' itself wasn't actually listed on the chart), 1979 and 1982. I remember seeing the band perform the track on the Old Grey Whistle Test in October 1976 in a clip taken from their appearance at Knebworth as support act for the Rolling Stones on 21 August 1976. The then recent long hot summer was still fresh in everyone's minds and the clip brings back the good memories of that summer as you can see how hot it was, even at 7pm or 8pm at night.

21 August 1976 was also the same day that Queen played a free concert in Hyde Park. What a night for music legends!

Definitely a weaker list this time around - too much Marillion, most obviously....

I've just realised Sabbath's 'Iron Man' isn't on either list!

                                              • ^ So Myofist were also called Fist but they weren't the South Shields NWOBHM band also on the chart. That 82 release was called Fleet Street by Fist for the original Canadian release. https://www.discogs.com/master/643679-Fist-Fleet-Street

It seems odd that they had to change their name in the UK even though they seem to have started before the South Shields Fist.

"Fist, or Myofist, as they are known here to avoid confusion with Newcastle namesakes, are one of the weaker Canadian outfits. Their music is certainly heavy, Ron Chenier's guitar sees to that, but when it comes to songwriting they're found wanting. Ivan Tessier's keyboards are an occasional saving grace, as is the humorous Sherlock Holmes / Doctor Watson conversation rap at the beginning of 'Fleet Street' but overall it's a pretty drab affair to be avoided."

                                                  Ah well....
