Just as Hawkwind's 1982 re-recording of Silver Machine leaves the chart, the re-release of the '72 "live" original (complete with overdubbed Lemmy vocals) crashes back in.
Ozzy finally deposes Coverdale & Co. from the top spot.
Incidentally "Here I Go Again" was the fifth different single with that title to chart which made it, I think I'm right in saying, the most re-used title ever for hit singles. At that point there'd only been one hit called "Crazy" and two called "Angel".

Yup, South Shields is just a few miles away from where I live. Famous names associated with the town include Catherine Cookson, Eric Idle, Ridley Scott, two of Little Mix, X Factor winner Joe McElderry and er, the Angelic Upstarts (one of them lived a few doors away from me about a decade ago). Never heard of Fist though...

I've got Fist's "Back with a Vengeance" anthology on CD and there's a lot of good stuff on there. They were particularly strong on the lyrics front (check out "Name, Rank and Serial Number" or "You'll Never Get Me Up In One Of Those").
Not sure anyone really needed yet another cover of Dion's The Wanderer though - even though Fist's single is a lot better than Quo's version a couple of years later...Last edited by Metalweb; Mon March 9, 2020, 03:26.

The inclusion of The Cockney Rejects isn't a mistake!
After establishing themselves as a good time punk act in the Sham 69 tradition the band decided a change in direction was warranted. They brought in UFOs Pete Way as producer for a generic hard rock album called The Wild Ones which included the Kinks cover listed above and a closing track imaginatively titled Heat of the Night!

I've also got the 2008 version which I downloaded about a decade ago. I'd forgotten about it until I looked for a link for the 1984 original.

Yes, that was a good compilation album - I remember I had it on cassette back in the day.
I've also got the double cd variation released in 2008 and indeed played it a few weeks ago. It includes about twenty extra tracks but deletes a few (like Split Enz and Wang Chung) presumably for not being American enough!

The Stampede track isn't the old Henry Mancini/Johnny Mercer standard - but pretty close to it lyrically!

The Rods were ( I should say are) American Motorhead wannabes - definitely not the same act as Eddie and the Hot Rods.
I'd agree there are several entries in the chart that shouldn't really qualify - but that's the problem with all genre charts. What to include? What not to include?Last edited by Metalweb; Fri March 6, 2020, 23:02.

Tom Petty was once considered (hard) rock?
Note also Rods (formerly Eddie and The Hot Rods) - basically a pub rock group who pre-empted punk. Punk itself would rarely be included on these charts although OCC has included such acts more recently (after Green Day, The Offspring etc). EDIT: turns out it's ANOTHER band called The Rods! https://www.discogs.com/artist/330074-The-Rods
It should be said that Robert Plant should never have been included for most of his solo work and it wasn't unil he started doing bluegrass that he was excluded. He made synthesised pop or AOR in the 80s. But compilers included him because of his name. Gary Moore was also problematic as he veered between hard rock and blues - he should have been excluded after 1989. Still Got The Blues For You airing on The Chart Show's "Metal" top 10 seemed wrong.
And i've never been able to figure out how Marillion were ever included as most of their work wasn't heavy at all - these charts pre-date OCC's obsession with including progressive rock in these charts. King Crimson were heavier than Marillion! But then again, the metal mags like Kerrang! featured Marillion. Just like these days they feature the also un-hard Twenty One Pilots.Last edited by Blondini; Wed March 4, 2020, 23:56.

New entries in this chart for covers of seventies hits from Tammy Wynette and The Osmonds!
Tank's rehash of Crazy Horses is similar to, and pretty respectful to, the original.
Lemmy and Wendy's snotty mauling of Stand By Your Man isn't remotely respectful....fish in a barrel, though.Last edited by Metalweb; Wed March 4, 2020, 17:39.

Two metallized Motown covers at opposite ends of this chart...Rods on the way out with their Supremes cover while Gillan's powerful take on the Stevie Wonder classic crashes in at two.Last edited by Metalweb; Tue March 3, 2020, 02:19.

Music Week also had a chart from 1983 which I assume was compiled by the same people compiling the national chart (Gallup at this point). It was weekly for a little and then every two weeks before monthly in 1984. Not sure if it’s the same one but was a Top 30 Singles and Top 30 Albums.
I for one am interested in the topic as it’s always interesting to see what was selling just below the main chart.

UK Rock/Metal Charts (1980s and early '90s)
The official UK Rock/Metal charts are on the OCC website from 1994 but MRIB started to compile them back in mid 1982.
They were published in Sounds and its (then fortnightly) sister publication, Kerrang!
Sounds published the Top 20 singles and Top 30 albums but Kerrang! listed a full Top 30 singles and Top 40 albums.
I've most of the Kerrang! charts so I'll start to list the singles here. I'll list the albums too if there's enough interest.
The first chart was for 10 July 82 and published in Kerrang! Issue 20 (dated July 15-28)
