    • ^ Ian Gillan's sister made music.
The full act name and single title are actually Pauline Gillan's Northern Dancer - an EP https://www.discogs.com/Pauline-Gill...elease/2926641
Though that could be a 2-track 7" on the chart that Discogs don't have. Or maybe they didn't have room to give it the full credit?

I can find one more release by the Pauline Gillan Band in 85.

        Looks like the same release.

Issue 81 gives a positive review ("adept and masterly melodic rock") to the single "One More Time" by "Pauline Gillan Band"

An article in Issue 86 refers to the band (now identified as Northern Dancer) and their recent debut maxi-single...

          • 'All Join Hands' by Slade was their last top 20 national hit ('Merry Xmas Everybody' re-entries aside) and was a blatant attempt at trying to have another massive Christmas hit following the success of 'My Oh My' the previous year. It didn't quite work and indeed it has none of the charm of 'My Oh My'.

Agreed - and it rips off The Eagles' Take It To The Limit too!

I'd not noticed (or had forgotten!) it rips off 'Take It To The Limit', but, yes, you're right!

Foreigner join Survivor and Bonnie Tyler on the short list of acts to top the Rock Chart and National Chart simultaneously...

No sooner has Krokus' cover of Ballroom Blitz left the chart than it's replaced by a version of Sweet's follow-up single, Teenage Rampage, from long-lived punk band Vice Squad...

Another contentious new entry is former Heavy Metal Kids frontman turned actor Gary Holton (who died later in '85) with a semi-novelty cover of the old Perry Como hit.

                      • I didn't realise (orhad forgotten) that Gary Holton was still releasing singles as late as 1985. I suppose he was cashing in on his success in Auf Wiedersehen Pet although unlike Jummy Nail (Oz) he never crossed over to the national charts. A few months later he was dead from a drink and drugs overdose. I was quite sad when I heard he'd died as his (Wayne) was one of the best characters in the programme.

I never liked 'I Want To Know What Love Is' by Foreigner. Far too saccharine for my liking (though strangely I did like 'Waiting For A Girl Like You' in late 1981 which is also very soppy). I did like the follow up to 'I Want To Know What Love Is' though ('That Was Yesterday') which I bought. Incidentally the first ever 12" single I bought was by Foreigner, that was 'Feels Like The First Time', a re-issue of their 1977 single a year later in 1978. It was a mini-greatest hits as it also contained their two other US hits 'Long Long way From Home' and 'Cold As Ice'. Good value for money especially as 'Cold As Ice' was released as a single in its own right a short while later.

Agree That Was Yesterday was far better than IWTKWLI....

I also had that 3 track single from '78, but only on 7 inch as far as I can remember.

Also remember buying Hot Blooded (on blood red vinyl) the same year.

Most of my favourite Foreigner singles (Double Vision, Dirty White Boy, Head Games) mysteriously failed to chart at all in this country!

I bought 'Hot Blooded' too though it was on plain black vinyl 7". I also bought 'Blue Morning Blue Day' from the bargain bin of my local record shop in early 1979. I've got a Foreigner Best Of CD that I must dig out. I've not played it for years, maybe for well over a decade

Yes, in the early days they struggled in the UK despite the fact that almost half the group were English. That kind of American AOR style rock music just didn't really sell well in the UK. It's funny how they only really succeeded in the UK with slow, ballad type, songs.

Thanks, I have quite a few Kerrang! magazines from 1996 into the year 2000. Somewhere in 1999 they stopped quoting MRIB as the chart compiler. They still had some charts but it does not say who the compiler was so it could have still been MRIB but I am not sure. From that point onwards in 1999 they just had Top 40 albums and Top 20 singles. Previous to that point in 1999 they had Top 40 albums, Top 20 singles, Top 20 Indie LP's, Top 10 US albums, a reader's Top 10 songs and a Top 10 novelty chart - all that from at least 1996 to half way through 1999 and MRIB was quoted as the compiler apart for the Top 10 US albums, the reader's chart and the novelty chart. Some time into the 2000's they stopped publishing charts in Kerrang! altogether and then sometime in the 2010's they started publishing a chart based on airplay on Kerrang! radio and TV which is pretty much a junk chart compared to what they used to have.

                                              • Well if that's how the original Sounds/Kerrang! charts ended up, no wonder they didn't last. Phil Collins and Mick Jagger??? Members of the Eagles??

I did wonder over the years why Springsteen was never considered for these sort of charts - the ones in Number 1 magazine and on Channel 4 / ITV's The Chart Show - while Bryan and Rick Springfield were. But it's clear that a lot of his stuff is not really heavy enough. But of course you could point out Pat Benatar making pop records during this period. She was included on all rock charts but Billy Idol - who also went synthesised - was never. Yet Billy had the great Steve Stevens by his side ensuring the guitar sound was there at least occasionally.

That Ex Pistols thing was later revealed to be a con by early Pistols producer Dave Goodman. None of the Pistols were on it. Some old Guinness chart books still give a note saying it's early Sex Pistols. It is not.

                                                • As far as I remember that "Ex Pistols" single was generally acknowledged as an amusingly accurate pastiche on release.

Here's what the Kerrang! mag I've just been posting from had to say:

"This must rank as one of the more daring spoofs of recent years. They've ripped off the Sex Pistols name, logo and sound (the Johnny Rotten soundalike is, I'm told, a young Pakistani with a nifty ear for the punk mannerism!) the Virgin Records logo and Elgar to boot! This record is nothing if not brazen. It's a laff and the rip-off is so well executed that any Pistols fan should lap it up...."

                                                  Comment

                                                  • I have to admit I thought the Ex Pistols record was by the real thing though by February 1985 I was taking less notice of a lot of chart music so probably gave the record little more than a cursory glance and then totally ignored it.

Blondini is right about some of the records that are making the charts - 'Sussidio' is more pop dance than rock. I wonder who was deciding which acts were allowed to chart. It certainly doesn't seem like a genre chart. It just seems like the qualifying rules was a white rock act regardless of how rock the act actually were. I don't mind Bruce Springsteen being in there though as 'Born In The USA' is a great album even though some of it is more AOR than actual rock.
