At least, they are far more rock acts than all those Heart, Starship, Bryan Adams, and Cher. Generally, I find these charts rockier and heavier than those of 1985-87...

Note Michael Bolton popping up there! Because he had a hard rock background. Yet, oddly, the Kerrang! chart ignores him. It always looked very odd when he turned up on The Chart Show's metal chart until he was dropped around the same time as Cher in 91/92.

'Can I Play With Madness' is the single that kickstarted Iron Maiden's run of 7 consecutive top 10 hitss and brought them to the mainstream. Or at least as close to the mainstream as they were ever likely to get. It coincided with the rise of multi-format releases that rock groups in general, and Iron Maiden in particular, were able to use to their advantage. Iron Maiden in particular became masters at staggering format releases in weeks 1 and 2. With 'Can I Play With Madness' week 1 saw the vinyl (7" and 12") formats while in week 2 the CD format was released. And in one of the two weeks a 7" shaped picture disc was also released. This staggering of formats between the first two weeks was enough in the late 80s to allow Iron Maiden records to climb in week two before the inevitable drop in chart positions kicked in.
